FAST FACTS Immaculate Conception Swimming 2013-2014 Moderator: Ms. Kathleen Prager Head Instructor: Bruce Frank Immaculate Conception Youth Ministry Committee is happy to inform families that we are able to offer an instructional swim program for children ages 6-15. Space is limited and final confirmation is based on several factors, some of which are beyond the Youth Ministry Committee’s control. Registration is a 2 Part Process. Part 1 Registration is on Wed, October 2nd from 6:00 -7:15 pm and Sunday October 6 from 10:15-11:30 am in Lyon’s Hall in Immaculate Conception School. The permission/ waiver form and $100.00 are due at registration. Please make checks payable to Immaculate Conception Church. -2013 -2014 is a rebuilding year. Swimming will not be a competitive team. We will focus on the acquisition of strokes, endurance and swimming as a lifetime sport. Immac Swimming is open to children ages 6-15 and beginners through advanced levels are welcome. - Immac Swimming is using the Variety Boys and Girls Club (VBGC) facilities, located at: 21-12 30th Road, Astoria, New York (718) 728-0946. - Mondays 4:15-5:00; 5:15-6pm and right now the plan is to have both groups come Fridays 4-5pm for an extra -practice session. Be advised this Friday factor may change based on the discretion of VBGC and our instructors. Class time will be assigned by instructors and determined by numbers and available instructors. You will be called by October 10 to confirm time. The Swim Club will begin Session I on October 11, 2013 which is an orientation day for all beginners and placement for novice through advanced swimmers. Come prepared to swim, but in water time will be shorter that day. Session I runs 10 weeks through December. Session II registration will be in December and classes will begin January, 2014 and will run through March. -Swim caps, one-piece swim suit for the young ladies; and lined swim trunks for gentlemen; towel, pool shoes (flip-flops etc.) and locks for the locker are required. Immaculate Conception Church, Variety Boys and Girls Club Coaches, volunteers, staff, employees are Not RESPONSIBLE FOR VALUABLES LOST. Do NOT BRING THEM TO SWIMMING. - There is limited space, thus a spot is not guaranteed. The first to complete the Two-Part Registration procedure before the spaces fill in his/her level will be assigned. This includes: 1. The Permission/waiver packet contains: permission slip and waiver, parent telephone, email address. Swimmers must have a parent/guardian sign permission slip and waiver and return these with a 100.00 check or money order payable to “Immaculate Conception Church” and swimming noted on the subject line. Please read the skills required for various levels. Parents can expedite the placement process by not over estimating the child’s ability and using criteria described on the attached sheet.3. Part II of Registration will be done online. Swimmers must register and join the Variety Boys and Girls Club. There is a $35.00 membership fee. You will be directed how to register. Note: Swimmers MUST have a physical/ completed medical approval form on file with the club in order to swim at the Variety Boys and Girls Club.4. Families can also register separately for the Family Swim Program at the Boys Club. It costs $90.00 and this allows up to 4 to swim from 1-3pm on Saturdays from September 28 to December, 21st. Immaculate Conception Swimming Parent Guardian Permission Slip and Waiver I have read the Immac Conception Swimming Fact Sheet and agree to the terms stated therein. I understand that participation is limited and on a first come basis and participants will also have to become a member of the Variety Boys and Girls Club and pay a $35.00 membership fee to them and sign all of their online forms, waivers and releases. I understand with all activities, sports and strenuous pursuits there are risks and injuries associated and at times, unanticipated ones and for which all employees, personnel, moderators and instructors of Immaculate Conception and the Variety Boys and Girls Club, are not responsible or liable. To the best of my knowledge my child, ________________________________________ does not have any conditions that would prevent him/her from undertaking swimming. Immaculate Conception and the Variety Boys and Girls’ Club staff are hereby given permission to give normal first aid to my child. I understand Immaculate Conception Church and the Variety Boys and Girls’ Club will not be held liable for the bestowal of such health care. In the event that parent/ guardian and emergency contact cannot be contacted, I hereby give my permission for any necessary emergency treatment that is administered for the welfare of my child. I hereby release Immaculate Conception Church and Youth Ministry and the Variety Boys’ and Girls’ Club, all employees and volunteers from liability and harm arising to my child during participation in the Immaculate Conception Swim Club. Angel Fish Absolute beginner, little or no experience in water. - Learn to: Submerge face, blowing bubbles, jumping in shallow, practice holding breath, opening eyes underwater, float on front and back. - Introduce: Arm and leg movements on front & back Clown Fish Beginner, non-swimmers who are comfortable in water; work on all skills introduced in Angel Fish class. Skills performed with Little/No support. - Tread in deep water, retrieve objects - Introduce: Elementary back, breaststroke arms *IN ORDER TO PROGRESS to next level MUST PERFORM ALL TASKS WITHOUT FEAR, BE COMFORTABLE DOING 10-30 SECONDS OF TREADING* Lion Fish Intermediate, children must be able to tread water for 10-30 seconds and swim to pool side if needed. - Improving stroke techniques, front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, treading water - Introduce: Breaststroke, sit, kneel & standing dives *MUST PROVE EFFICIENCY IN ALL SKILLS TO MOVE ON TO NEXT LEVEL* DOLPHINS: Advanced Intermediate - Improving front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary back, diving - Introduce: Sidestroke, dolphin kick, butterfly, flip turns, dives *MUST BE EFFICIENT IN ALL SKILLS TO MOVE UP* SHARK FINS Advanced Swimmer, perfecting stroke mechanics; front, back, breast, elementary - Improve: Butterfly stroke, side stroke - Introduce: Racing Dives, Pull-outs, and turns *FOCUS ON BUILDING ENDURANCE* ADVANCED: Pre-Swim Team Swimmer, classes are run like swim team practices - Introduce: Pace clocks and sets involving all four competitive strokes - Improve: sprints speeds *GRADUAL INCREASE IN YARDAGE TO BUILD ENDURANCE*
