Director of Philanthropy Opportunity Guide About Panorama Panorama, a not-for-profit organization, is a premier continuing care retirement community (CCRC) for active, independent seniors. Located on a picturesque 140-acre campus in Lacey, Washington, roughly 60 miles southwest of Seattle, 118 miles northwest of Portland, OR, and minutes away from the state capital, Olympia, WA, Panorama is the largest CCRC in the Pacific Northwest and is home to 1,250 residents hailing from 45 states. Panorama boasts a wide variety of housing choices for its residents, with more than 850 homes in styles ranging from spacious duplexes to cozy cottages and single-family homes overlooking the lake. As its residents’ healthcare demands change over time, Panorama ensures access to continued care, offering Assisted Living, Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing in its Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center. Panorama is co-led by the Executive Management Team of Matt Murry (President/COO) and Bill Strader (CEO/CFO), under the direction of the Board of Directors. The Office of Philanthropy falls under the management of the President/ COO, and has its own liaison to the Board of Directors. The Director of Philanthropy will also work closely with the CEO/ CFO. Looking ahead, Panorama is in the midst of implementing a Strategic Plan to take the organization through 2019. Strategic initiatives include: • The development, implementation, and intentional management of processes to effectively sustain the Panorama culture • The continued modernization of facilities • The expansion of marketing and consumer education efforts to build increasing brand awareness and emotional attachment • The further deployment of IT hardware and software resources to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of business processes and resident services • The preservation and prudent allocation of financial resources. The Opportunity: Director of Philanthropy The Director of Philanthropy will create strategies for Panorama, ensuring resources are in place and implementing a program to dramatically propel the philanthropic culture and outcomes of the organization. Panorama is seeking to grow engagement from residents, families, partners and other stakeholders, including the Greater Olympia community. The Director will be well-positioned in an environment that values change management, progressive thinking, and the development of a culture of philanthropy across Panorama. The opportunity follows the recent change in leadership resulting in the promotion of two long time Panorama leaders (Mr. Murry and Mr. Strader). The retiring leader of philanthropy reported to a seventeen-year, beloved, CEO, who also recently retired. The Director of Philanthropy reports directly to the President/COO. Performance Objectives : Visionary Leadership •Develop a vision for expansion of Panorama’s annual and long-term philanthropic program, in partnership and cooperation with the Panorama Board of Directors, Panorama Resident Council, The Benevolent Fund, and the Executive Management Team; creating a vision for philanthropy to meet institutional priorities, including the goals of the current Strategic Plan. •Develop, maintain and strengthen productive and respectful relationships with the Panorama Resident Council, the Benevolent Fund, the Board of Directors, the Executive Management Team and staff, the philanthropic community, other volunteers, donors, prospects, and residents and their families. •Foster a culture of collaboration throughout Panorama and its stakeholders, encouraging cooperation and instilling a culture and appreciation of philanthropy among all Panorama staff and volunteers, including the Board of Directors. •Serve as an articulate, enthusiastic, and visible spokesperson and expert on Panorama philanthropy and best practices in the field. •Serve as an organizational resource by providing appropriate training and support to the Executive Management Team, Board of Directors, and others involved in fundraising. •Maintain confidentiality and ensure sensitive communications are kept in confidence. Organization Management and Administration •Develop and submit Panorama’s Philanthropic Plan to the Executive Management Team and Board of Directors for endorsement, seeking to align Panorama’s goals and objectives with the overall Strategic Plan of Panorama. •Establish program goals and monitor goals regularly by communicating progress and achievements in order to successfully implement Panorama’s annual fundraising plan, and develop appropriate plans and fundraising vehicles to meet those goals. •Prepare the annual philanthropy budget for Panorama and present budget for review and approval to the Executive Management Team and Panorama Board of Directors as required. •Provide management and oversight in the development of all necessary and appropriate processes and information systems to manage a comprehensive and growing philanthropic program. •Utilize technology and develop policies to best keep donor records current, relevant, and confidential. Have current knowledge of best practices, database utilization and other technological options to further the effectiveness of the role. Panorama currently uses FrontStream/GiftWorks as its donor database. •Ensure optimal adherence to fundraising policies and procedures that are standard in the profession. Report regularly to the Executive Management Team and the Board of Directors on the performance of the Office of Philanthropy. •Maintain strong presence with residents at Panorama, and ensure that the materials needed for passive solicitation (materials, posters, news articles, etc.) of residents and families are up to date and readily available. Fundraising •Provide executive leadership and oversight for all aspects of philanthropy, including related staff and volunteer activities and relationships. •Rate and screen prospects and donors to establish and maintain an active portfolio (identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship) of major gift focused donor relationships. In addition, support and partner with the Executive Management Team and the Board of Directors in their philanthropic activities and prospect management. •Provide strategic leadership in significantly growing and diversifying Panorama’s donor base and giving levels. •Build and steward an engaged “giving and getting” Board of Directors, providing leadership, training and coaching as required. •Maintain knowledge of charitable tax laws, prepare documents for gift transactions, engage counsel for advice on such transactions and regulatory compliance, and accept gifts and pledges as an agent for Panorama. •Provide oversight to a strong, growing program of planned giving vehicles, including charitable remainder trusts (CRT’s), gift annuity agreements, bequests, etc. •Assure department’s compliance with regulations, statutes, and ethical and professional standards. Volunteer and Resident & Board, Community Engagement •Work with and provide training for Panorama Board of Directors and committee members, providing motivation and support management related to philanthropy. •Develop strong, trusting relationships with Board leadership and, in particular, the Office of Philanthropy Board Liaison. •Maintain close ties with the Panorama Resident Council volunteers who play a role in fundraising, and cultivate volunteers in order to deliberately engage them in the culture of philanthropy at Panorama. •Build a trusting relationship with Benevolent Fund volunteers to market philanthropy as a larger organization-wide philosophy, finding ways to work together to grow and strengthen the greater philanthropic strategy of Panorama. •Serve as an Executive Leadership face in the Lacey/ Olympia community, representing Panorama on and in community leadership places with high visibility. Philanthropy Communications •Lead and drive all communication efforts for Panorama related to philanthropic components of the organization’s Strategic Plan. •Lead efforts to raise the profile of Panorama in the philanthropic community. Provide strategic leadership to Panorama’s efforts to effectively communicate its mission, goals, and accomplishments to residents, families, other donors, prospective donors and the broader community. •Work collaboratively with staff to ensure clear, consistent, and impactful messaging in fundraising efforts is used verbally and in print when describing Panorama. •Envision, compose, and ensure quality for all print materials (internal and external) that support the philanthropic process, inclusive of budgets, design, production and distribution. •Utilizing current technology, and partnering with marketing staff and vendors, initiate, build, and maintain key relationships with donors, prospects, donor institutions, internal stakeholders, and other key community partners through quality, consistent, and clear communications. •Create and implement a plan to identify and build strong relationships with community leaders and volunteers, and engage organizations to collaborate with Panorama. •Represent Panorama at LeadingAge and other meetings, conferences or venues. The Qualified Candidate: Panorama seeks an innovative, entrepreneurial and seasoned leader with at least six (6) years of progressive experience in philanthropy programs, four (4) of those in a leadership position with a small team. S/he will be relationship-focused, trustworthy, optimistic, and visibly engaged with a wide variety of stakeholders – most importantly, residents. Ideally, s/he will have previous leadership experience in expanding an organization-wide culture of philanthropy. S/he will be an attentive listener and a goal-oriented, natural leader who is passionate and committed to the full mission and vision of Panorama in order to bring the organization to the next level of philanthropy. The Director will need to be a confident, self-directed professional, able to succeed in a 1-person department working as a sophisticated generalist with strong Major Gift/Planned Giving expertise. Specific requirements include: •A demonstrated passion for Panorama’s mission and vision. •A strategic orientation to building and growing a philanthropic program, with demonstrated ability to develop and implement creative fund development plans. •Leadership experience in building fundraising programs and fostering a culture of collaboration and cooperation. •Significant experience in securing funding from individuals, corporations and foundations with a recent focus on Major and Planned Gifts. •Demonstrated ability to set and achieve or exceed goals. •Career track record that shows stability with an organization and a capacity to develop and nurture relationships that culminate in major gift success. •Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to serve as a key spokesperson for Panorama philanthropy. •Knowledge of and expertise in various major and planned gift instruments, and a proven track record of successful marketing of such instruments. •Demonstrated ability to work successfully with board members and other volunteers, as well as civic and business leaders, in a collaborative manner. •Serve as a team player who can accept advice to ensure the fulfillment of Panorama’s mission. •Entrepreneurial spirit, creative problem solver and strong collaborator. •Bachelor’s degree required, CFRE preferred with 6 years of progressive fundraising experience.
