Day 1 Using Function Notation

Algebra 2 Day #1 Using Function Notation f(x) Name: ______________________ This does NOT mean f times x If f(x) = x2 + 5, then
Example 1: If f(z) = 2z - 3, find the following:
a) f(-2)
b) f(7b)
c) f(7+b)
Example 2: If k(r) = -7r2 + r – 3, find the following:
a) k(-1)
b) k(2a)
c) k(2+a)
Example 3: Let's consider two separate equations:
a. Rewrite both in function notation.
y = 3x+2
and
b = a2 – 3
b. Now, write each of these instructions in function notation and give the answer.
1. Substitute a 2 into the first function (in other words, use 2 as your input)
2. Substitute a 7 into the second function
3. Substitute a triangle into the first equation.
4. Double the first equation and substitute (-5m).
5. Find the input that will make the first function equal to 20.
