The first of these pioneering railroads was the Texas & New Orleans. Construction began in 1862 but was halted by the Civil War. After the war, the Texas and New Orleans Railroad Co. reached an agreement with two other railroads to build a line between Houston and New Orleans. Several years later, St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway Co. completed a southern line from Arkansas to Alexandria, Louisiana, that extended down to Avondale, across the Mississippi River from New Orleans. The Huey P. Long Bridge opened in 1935. This massive bridge spanned 4.35 miles over the Mississippi in New Orleans and fulfilled the early railroaders’ ambition to make the Big Easy a gateway between the West and the East. UNION PACIFIC IN LOUISIANA UNION PACIFIC IN LOUISIANA AMERICA’S PREMIER RAILROAD Union Pacific partners with a variety of Louisiana industries, including chemical and petrochemical, paper manufacturing, lumber production and destination traffic for auto manufacturing assembly plants. One of America's most recognized companies, Union Pacific Railroad (NYSE: UNP) connects 23 states in the western two-thirds of the country by rail, providing a critical link in the global supply chain. From 2006-2016, Union Pacific invested approximately $34 billion in its network and operations to support America's transportation infrastructure. The railroad's diversified business mix includes Agricultural Products, Automotive, Chemicals, Coal, Industrial Products and Intermodal. Union Pacific serves many of the fastest-growing U.S. population centers, operates from all major West Coast and Gulf Coast ports to eastern gateways, connects with Canada's rail systems and is the only railroad serving all six major Mexico gateways. Union Pacific provides value to its roughly 10,000 customers by delivering products in a safe, reliable, fuel-efficient and environmentally responsible manner. The railroad serves three ports: Lake Charles, Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Important rail connections are also made at New Orleans with eastern carriers. Union Pacific uses the Huey P. Long Bridge to cross the Mississippi River at New Orleans. Union Pacific operates an intermodal facility west of New Orleans at Westwego. In addition, there are freight classification yards in Alexandria and Avondale, a major classification yard in Livonia and rail yards in Shreveport and Monroe. Union Pacific recently invested in a new Storage-In-Transit (SIT) yard in Pointe Coupee Parish. The 750-car capacity yard stores more than 500 cars on average and is one of eight SIT yards giving UP and customers a competitive advantage, storing plastic pellet-filled covered hoppers ready to depart quickly to markets across our rail system. Union Pacific, Port of Greater Baton Rouge and Port Tenants partnered to bring world-class rail infrastructure to the port. The receiving track and chambering yard are set for completion near the end of 2017, ensuring the port's tenants are competitive and providing the flexibility of world-class rail service. The track will allow rail traffic to move through West Baton Rouge with the least impact. Union Pacific invested more than $694 million in Louisiana transportation infrastructure from 2012 to 2016. SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITIES WE SERVE In 2016, Union Pacific provided support by donating more than $332,000 to Louisiana charitable organizations, such as the Louisiana Sheriffs Association, Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and the Foundation for Historical Louisiana Inc. These organizations were reached through a combination of the Union Pacific Foundation, matching gifts and corporate contributions. The Union Pacific Foundation is the primary philanthropic arm of Union Pacific Corporation and has distributed funds since 1959 to qualified organizations in communities served by Union Pacific.
