Milestone commitment to the horse
among highlights of AAEP Foundation’s
20th anniversary
The AAEP Foundation celebrated
its 20th anniversary in 2014 and
crossed a milestone threshold in
the process when cumulative grant
disbursements in support of equine
welfare topped the $3-million mark.
The milestone was achieved last
summer when the Foundation
distributed $284,000 for 24
equine organizations and special
projects committed to improving
the welfare of the horse. Among
the grant recipients was the Horses
and Humans Research Foundation,
which is funding scientific research
into the benefits of equine-assisted
programs for military veterans
suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress
Disorder and/or traumatic brain
injury. You can read about the
potential impact of this important
research on page 4.
The Foundation’s 20th anniversary
year culminated at the AAEP’s
60th Annual Convention in Salt
Lake City, Utah, where revenues
generated from the Foundation
Celebration auctions, trap shoot
tourney, text pledges and gifts
exceeded $150,000! Such strong
support and the many years of
loyal commitments from a growing
number of AAEP members and
others have helped the Foundation
firmly establish its roots as a
respected leader in providing help
for horses through veterinary
student scholarships, educational
programs, equine research and
benevolent projects worldwide.
Veterinary students develop their clinical
skills during an educational dry lab at the
2014 AAEP Annual Convention.
The Foundation’s ongoing
investment in the next generation
of equine veterinarians remained
highly visible at the convention as
hundreds of veterinary students took
advantage of the expansive slate of
student programming to grow their
clinical and career-management
skills through educational dry labs,
professional development discussions
and other student-centric sessions.
In addition, eight of the most
promising fourth-year veterinary
students received AAEP Foundation/
Markel scholarships to help offset
the cost of their education.
Broad participation is essential
to helping the AAEP Foundation
achieve future funding milestones, so
plan now to support the Foundation
in 2015. Students, benevolent
organizations and the horse are in
need of the Foundation’s aid now
more than ever.
Mission Statement:
To serve as the charitable arm of the AAEP to improve the welfare
of the horse.

Dr. Neal Hamilton
What we do: How the Foundation improves the lives of horses
For more than 20 years the AAEP
Foundation has been raising money,
serving as the charitable arm of the
AAEP. But it’s what we do with those
gifts to improve the lives of horses that
makes the real difference.
Each year the Foundation and its staff
work to raise money so that projects
and programs that benefit the welfare
of the horse can receive support. The
Foundation is fortunate that the AAEP
pays its operating expenses, which
means that 100% of all proceeds
ultimately go to help horses. While
30% of all general contributions go
into the corpus each year, 70% are
invested in projects the following
year. When the Foundation reaches
its $5 million corpus goal—the corpus
currently stands at approximately $3
million—the plan is to use the annual
interest earned from the corpus to help
fund additional programs benefiting
the horse.
Dr. Tracy Turner
The Foundation accepts applications
for funding each spring. Although
programs and projects vary, each must
fit within the Foundation’s mission
of improving equine welfare. At an
annual summer meeting, members
of the Foundation Advisory Council
review the applications and make
recommendations to the AAEP
Foundation board, which makes final
determinations on funding for the year.
The Foundation is prepared to assist in times of natural disaster, including floods.
As an education-based organization,
the Foundation supports many
programs that help educate veterinary
students, recent graduates or those
considering careers in equine veterinary
medicine. This support comes in the
form of various scholarship programs,
continuing education meetings for
students, meeting travel support and
more. The Foundation council and
board strongly feel that an educated
veterinarian will provide much of the
needed impact on the welfare of the
horses they interact with in the future.
Education, however, is not the
only area the Foundation supports.
Additional projects are
funded that provide
direct benevolence
and relief to horses in
need. An example of
some of these areas
include support of
Equitarian programs,
which provide help for
working equids and
education for their
caretakers, mostly
in underdeveloped
countries. Disaster
relief is another area
of benevolence. The
Foundation is known

by the AAEP Foundation.

disaster with funds being directed to
horses in need or toward programs
that improve the disaster preparedness
for horses.
Equine research is another area
that directly affects the welfare of
horses. While it may take a little
longer for this impact to occur, in
the end research can and has proven
to provide a much greater benefit.
Currently, the Foundation is directing
much of its research support toward
the study of laminitis. This direction
comes as a result of two surveys, in
2003 and again in 2009, where AAEP
members said laminitis should be a
priority for the Foundation.
The Foundation also plays an
important role within the equine
community. While this support is
smaller than many of the above areas,
it is important for the Foundation to
partner with industry efforts. Just a
few of the industry projects supported
by the Foundation include the
Unwanted Horse Coalition, Operation
Gelding program, American Youth
Horse Council and National FFA.

and projects the Foundation invests in,

Foundation grants helping serve military veterans who
bravely served us

An estimated 300,000 military
veterans deployed since 2001 have
returned home with Post-Traumatic
Stress Disorder (PTSD), an affliction
with no known cure but for which
early identification and treatment of
symptoms can lessen its severity and
improve quality of life.
Although there is no shortage of
anecdotal evidence supporting the
benefits of equine-assisted programs
for veterans suffering from PTSD,
the Horses and Humans Research
Foundation (HHRF), with a monetary
assist from the AAEP Foundation
and others, has funded two scientific
research projects that could provide
the evidence-based outcomes necessary
to expand veterans’ access to these
beneficial programs.
HHRF is the only organization dedicated solely to funding research to
support the equine-assisted activities and therapies field. In 2013, it
funded research at the University
of Missouri College of Veterinary
Medicine examining the effects of six
weeks of human-horse interaction
and systematic therapeutic horseback
riding on 40 military veterans with
PTSD and/or traumatic brain injury.
The intervention’s impact on participants’ experience of PTSD symptoms,
coping skills, emotional regulation and
social engagement were assessed at the
outset, after three and six weeks of
participation, and three months after
the conclusion. The research findings
are expected soon, and publication
in a peer-reviewed journal could take
another year.
A related research project, launched in
December 2014 at Baylor University,
will assess changes in PTSD symptoms,
quality of life and life participation of
combat veterans who participate in
equine-assisted activities. The research
team will assess 75 veterans learning
to ride and care for horses in five different programs using slightly different
measures than the initial project in
terms of well-being and recovery from
PTSD symptoms.
The U.S. Army Caisson Platoon
Equine Assisted Program, which serves

Program at Fort Belvoir, Va.
the Walter Reed National Military
Medical Center, provided HHRF with
seed funding toward these projects
in 2011 after working with many
veterans and finding tremendous
responses from PTSD and traumatic
brain injury recovery.
“The Caisson Platoon understands that
the VA [U.S. Department of Veterans
Affairs] is really pressuring for more
research in this area before they will
wholeheartedly embrace it,” said
HHRF Executive Director KC Henry.
“Having the scientific evidence will do
things such as influence the VA and
their recommendations and endorsements, and in paying for programs so
that more veterans can ride.
Henry is optimistic that compelling
scientific evidence resulting from these
projects will convince the insurance
profession to buy in as well in order to
help cover the cost of equine-assisted
therapies for military veterans.
“It’s been a hard concept for us to
sell the importance of research, and
we really appreciate that the AAEP
Foundation could see the benefit,”
she said.
“We have 20 veterans a day committing suicide,” she added. “That’s an
incredible number that adds up to
more than the number of veterans who
have died overseas in these last three
wars (in Iraq and Afghanistan). And
yet people still want to provide money
for direct services; they’re not as compelled to provide money for research,
which is really going to influence the
future and the availability of this type
of program.”

Leave a ‘Legacy’ that benefits horses universally
An AAEP Foundation giving circle called the Legacy
Society recognizes those who include the AAEP
Foundation in their estate plans. If you would like your
name added to the list of members for the Legacy Society,
please let us know. Of course, requests for anonymity are
honored and all details of the arrangement are completely
confidential.
To learn more about a planned gift to the AAEP
Foundation, visit www.aaepfoundation.org and select
“Planned Giving” in the drop-down menu under the tab
“How to Help.”
An estate gift to the AAEP Foundation can help fund
special interests of the donor, ranging from scholarships to research projects to educational or benevolent
programs. These generous commitments will strengthen
the Foundation’s ability to improve the welfare of horses
everywhere in the years ahead.
