Dear Parents, Students and Staff,
In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis reminds us that “…the mercy of God is not an abstract idea, but a
concrete reality with which He reveals His love as that of a father or a mother, moved to the very depths out of love
for their child. It is hardly an exaggeration to say that this is a “visceral” love. It gushes forth from the depths
naturally, full of tenderness and compassion, indulgence and mercy”.
He also reminds us that, “…. we too are the people who, on the one hand, want to listen to Jesus, but on the other
hand, at times, like to find a stick to beat others with, to condemn others. And Jesus has this message for us: mercy.
I think — and I say it with humility — that this is the Lord's most powerful message: mercy”.
Forgiveness is a Christian value we try to impart to our students at Xavier. It is not easy to forgive those who
wrong us. However, when we do forgive a wrongdoer, there is a sense of liberation. When we walk around
harbouring angry and bitter feelings toward someone who has done something hurtful or wrong to us, we hurt
ourselves, not the person who committed the wrongdoing. Unresolved anger and resentment manifests itself in the
way we live our lives and ultimately, they affect our health and quality of life.
Some issues that affect us deeply some time back. Think of the effects that they have had on so many of our life
experiences. Do you want to start anew? Are you interested in shaping how you respond to life from this point
forward? Consider the notion of forgiveness. Forgiveness frees us of the burden of resentment and anger; the
greater the hurt, the greater the benefits involved in forgiving the one who did the hurting.
Alexander Pope stated, “To err is human; to forgive, divine. Forgiving doesn’t mean forgetting. Forgiving doesn’t
mean accepting unacceptable behaviour. Forgiving isn’t excusing another’s inexcusable actions. Forgiveness is all
about achieving freedom from the one who wronged you. Forgiveness is a way to move on so the hurt no longer
controls future life experiences and interactions with others.
The healing benefits of forgiveness include:
•
Decreased stress levels
•
Decreased anger and negative thoughts
•
Decreased anxiety and depression
•
Decreased vulnerability to substance abuse/addictive illness
Forgiving others is one of the greatest gifts you can give… yourself.
The Story of St Ignatius of Loyola, St Francis Xavier and the Early Jesuits (cont…)
Ignatius – Venice and the Road to Rome: At the end of 1535, Ignatius had travelled from Spain to Venice. He
delved into the study of theology, directed the spiritual exercises, and waited for his companions to come from
Paris. In 1537, Ignatius was ordained a priest, but he postponed his first Mass, hoping to offer it in the Holy Land.
Because of hostilities between Venetians and the Turks, travel to the Holy Land ceased. The companions, including
Francis Xavier, decided to go to Rome. By this time, they had begun identifying themselves as the ‘Company of
Jesus”. During the journey to Rome, regretting that he could not fulfil his pledge to return to Jerusalem, Ignatius
unburdened his heart and soul to God. Then he heard God say to him, ‘I will show you favour in Rome”. With this
assurance, he and his companions went forward with confidence.
God Bless,
Michael Vella

Feast of St Mary of the Cross (MacKillop) –
8th August
XCC was well represented at the parish Mass celebrating the
life of Australia’s first saint. SRC members from Years 7-10
joined some representatives form CSYMA classes at St
Francis Xavier’s Church in Ballina. This day is particularly
significant for our Parish Pastoral Associate – Sr Kathryn
Sweeney, who belongs to Mary MacKillop’s order, the
Sisters of St Joseph.

Shine Gathering 18th/19th August
The annual diocesan gathering for CSYMA students in Years 9 and 10
has evolved into the largest ‘regional Catholic gathering’ in Australia.
Our XCC students who attended Shine last week are to be commended
for their excellent conduct and participation. Many thanks go to Senior
Ministry Team members from Year 11 (Eddie Lee, Caitlin Whitting,
Claire Evans, Ryley Woods, Kaitlyn Patterson, Tarnya Melenhorst and
Bianca Robbins) who generously volunteered two days to assist in the
running of Shine – and to our YMO Amelia Kearney and Assistant
Parish Priest Fr Stefan, both of whom played leading roles in the event.
There are many photos and videos of the Shine gathering on the

Pastoral Care Program

School Students and Inappropriate Images
There has been a large amount of press in recent weeks regarding some appalling behaviour with images of
Australian female students. There are many and severe legal ramifications of such behaviour, which the students
have been educated about. However, I would hope that we can act in terms of what is decent, right and just. I would
hope our boys would not be tempted to participate in this behaviour which devalues our female members of the
community. I would also hope that our girls refrain from allowing inappropriate images to be taken and distributed.
I acknowledge that young people face significant pressure from peers to conform to social norms, which at times
makes choosing the safe decision difficult. It is up to all who make up our community to assist, by creating a safe
positive environment that does not seek to put the wrong sort of pressure on our young people.
I ask that parents and guardians have frank and honest discussions with their children in this respect.
There is advice at the Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner which is an Australian Federal Government
body. This can be found at https://esafety.gov.au/.
Guest Speaker - John Coutis
The College was privileged to have John Coutis speak to all year groups on Wednesday,
24th August. John was born with a severe disability and not expected to live even one day.
He is now a motivational speaker around the world. John spoke to the students about his
difficult journey through life and the importance of setting goals. He engaged the students,
speaking with humour and candour. I’am sure all students have benefited from his
presence at the College.
Pastoral Care Program
Students have been participating in the Pastoral Care\Wellbeing program throughout the year. The planner is an
important tool to assist with this. Please have a conversation with your child about the focus of the week or browse
through the planner to see the areas that are covered. Students will be more enthused at different times with
different subjects depending upon their current state of play. I firmly believe that the skills introduced will be a part
of building resilience over the longer term. Any support you can offer is appreciated.

Congratulations to Miss Keeley Serone (pictured left) for being named a

Teaching staff at Xavier Catholic College have been engaging with the
research of Dylan Wiliam and embedding short term formative assessment
strategies into their teaching practice. Dylan Wiliam advocates that the regular
use of practical classroom strategies that are designed to elicit evidence of
learning, can improve teacher practice and have a significant impact on
improving student achievement. One of the greatest shifts advocated by
Dylan Wiliam is the move away from the traditional practice of asking
students to volunteer answers to questions through the use of “Hands Up”. Staff at Xavier have been working on
embedding strategies that draw responses from a wider number of students in the classroom and techniques that
aim to Question Everyone in order to help our students learn more effectively. Some of the techniques currently
being used within our classrooms that reflect contemporary research on this area are outlined below.
RANDOMISED QUESTIONING: Rather than allowing students to volunteer an answer to a question by way of
the teacher calling for “Hands Up”, staff use random name generator apps to encourage a broader range of students
to engage, participate and respond to questioning around the targeted content of the lesson.
NAME STICKS: In this Visual Arts class, a set of name sticks are being utilised by the teacher as a tool to
randomise questioning in the classroom. This technique is used to elicit responses from a broad range of students
within the group. This questioning strategy allows the teacher to gauge what has been learnt and understood by the
class and provides feedback to the teacher on content that requires further consolidation.
PLICKERS: Plickers cards are an example of an all student response system. Rather than asking students to put
up their hands, or having one “confident” student volunteer an answer to a question, Plickers allows the teacher to
Question Everyone. This technique is utilised in order to find out what the class and individual students have learnt
and most importantly, what areas require further attention. A mobile phone or an iPad is used by the teacher in the
classroom to scan the individual student response cards and the answers from the class immediately appear in a bar
graph format. This tool allows the teacher to immediately identify areas that require further learning and provides
an opportunity to clarify any common misunderstandings that are evident within the group.
Xavier Catholic College
Love Yourself
Pedagogy Report (Cont’d)
HOT POTATO STRATEGY: The Hot Potato strategy is being used in these lessons as a way to randomise
questioning within the classroom and elicit evidence of what has been learnt. The student who receives the Hot
Potato responds to questions posed by the teacher and/or peers around key content. This strategy allows the teacher
to find out what the students have learnt and understood and what areas require further attention before progressing
with further content.
QUESTION EVERYONE: In this Italian class mini whiteboards are being utilised as an all student response
system. Every student reveals their answer to questions posed by the teacher. This technique increases response
rates from all students within the classroom and checks for understanding around the core content taught within the
lesson.
WRITE AND WIPE BOARDS: In this Mathematics class the teacher poses a financial mathematics problem and
all students reveal their answers on a write and wipe board. The blackline master (photocopied template) remains
inside the plastic sleeve and the responses written on the top of the plastic sleeve can be easily wiped off and
reworked or improved upon. This technique allows the teacher to readily identify areas that need further
explanation, in order to improve learning in the classroom.
In this senior class students are using coloured traffic light cups to self assess their abilities to respond to questions
around core content. This system allows the teacher to quickly scan the class and direct attention to areas that
require support in order to improve learning.

Art, History and Language Tour of French Canada 2017
Mrs Maureen Campey – Leader of Languages
Exciting news! We are organising a Study Tour of French
Canada in October 2017 during the second week of the
October holidays and the first week of Term 4. The trip is
open to current Year 9 and 10 students. Teachers
accompanying the group will be Mrs Maureen Campey, Mr
Chris Robinson and Ms Jasmin Rogers.
The approximate cost of the trip will be $6,000-$6,500 per
student. The final price is dependent on the exchange rate
and the number of students participating. Students are in
twin-share ensuite rooms and the price includes travel
insurance.
Some highlights of the trip include: city tours of Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City and Toronto, a visit to the
Canadian Parliament, a street art tour, a Niagara Falls boat trip, a bike tour of Montreal, an underground city tour of
Montreal, a visit to Montmorency Falls, a macaron cooking class, and a tour of the Beaupre Coast.
We will be holding an Information Meeting at the College on Tuesday, 13th September, 2016 at 5.30pm in M2
(under the Magis Centre).
We will then invite all interested parties to register their participation in the tour by paying a commitment deposit
of $1,000 before Friday, 14th October, 2016. This is the amount required by the travel agent to confirm the trip.
This will be returned if numbers are not sufficient to go ahead with planning the tour.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Maureen Campey at the College.
Debating Competition
Mrs Rhea Barber – Leader of English
Last Friday, 19th August, three Year 11 students (Sam Murphy, Katie McLennan
and Callum Viel) competed in the CSDA Regional Debating Competition at
Mount St Patrick College, Murwillumbah. Students were given the task of

not win, our students were exemplary in their performance in their very first
debate. Sam was complimented by the adjudicator as the stand out speaker.
Thank you to Sam, Katie and Callum for representing Xavier and to Mrs Austin
for all her effort in establishing a senior debating team.

NRCC Netball
On 28th July, four Xavier Catholic College netball teams, consisting of two
7/8 and two 9/10 teams, attended the NRCC Netball competition held at
the Lismore netball courts. All four teams played in beautiful conditions
against schools from around the region, in many tough games. Both 7/8
teams and one 9/10 team came out with a couple of great wins as they
played in four very close and fatiguing matches. In a final, gruelling match
against Trinity, the second 9/10 team ended the day undefeated and won
the competition. This day displayed the talent and potential of Xavier’s
netball players as they all competed at a very high level and continue to
return with outstanding results. Congratulations to all these girls.
