AT THE RIO TINTO ALCAN PLANETARIUM
Light not only transmits information, but also lets us explore the Universe on some enormous
scales. Its presence, as well as its absence, gives scientists invaluable clues adding to our
knowledge of the origins of the Universe and its evolution. Every day, increasingly sensitive
instruments detect more and more information on the visible and invisible matter that
surrounds us.
Dark Universe:
Voyage to the Heart of Dark Matter
Dark Universe is a 360° immersive show designed by a team of astrophysicists and scientific
visualization experts from the American Museum of Natural History, the California Academy
of Sciences and GOTO INC. They used the most recent scientific data to accurately describe
both the visible and invisible sides of the Universe. Dark Universe ushers us into a new era
of astronomical discoveries and answers some timeless questions. The adventure begins some
100 million light-years away from Earth and focuses on enigmatic cosmic phenomena thanks to
exquisite renderings of stars and galaxy clusters on an infinitely large scale.

DOUBLE FEATURE
AT THE RIO TINTO ALCAN PLANETARIUM
Pluto: Chronicles of an Ex-Planet
Until now, astronomers have only been able to hypothesize about what Pluto looks like. They’ll see how
accurate they were in mid-July, when the New Horizons probe, launched 9 years ago, comes to within
10,000 km of the dwarf planet. Pluto will reveal its secrets regarding its geological and morphological
make-up, the geography of its surface and the composition of its atmosphere.
A team from the Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium went to Arizona last spring to visit the legendary Lowell
Observatory and film some 360° immersive images of the historic telescope that discovered Pluto in 1930,
along with some of the most beautiful skies visible from Earth.
Pluto: Chronicles of an Ex-Planet is an immersive experience telling the story of this intriguing dwarf planet
that continues to fascinate us even today.
