Monday 31 October and Tuesday 1 November - SCHOOL CLOSED TO PUPILS - STAFF TRAINING
We hope you all enjoy the half term break, school starts again on
Wednesday 2 November 2016
Mrs Dyer
Mrs Dyer will be leaving us at Christmas to spend more time with her baby grandson. We are
all going to miss her a lot and wish her all the best for the future. We have advertised and will
be recruiting a teacher to take on the day and a half in class two from January.
School Donation
The Calstock Bike Show is an annual event held in August. It is a four day event enjoyed by both
visitors and locals. It brings in a good revenue for the village and each year the bike show makes
generous donations to local organisations. After yet another successful year the bike show
committee has decided to donate £1500 to Calstock School. We would like to say a massive thank you
for this amazing donation. We have also received a donation of £1000 from Bandit Television, who
have been filming the new drama ‘Delicious’ in the village this summer. These donations are a huge
boost to the school and we will be deciding how to best spend the money in the near future.
Spanish
We are excited to announce that class two and class three will be learning Spanish as their foreign
language this year. The children will learn simple phrases and vocabulary before moving onto
questions and answers for conversational Spanish. They will also find out about how life is
different for children of their age in Spain. Both classes will be taught Spanish by Mr Pengelly.
Harvest Celebration
Thank you so much for all the gifts you sent in for our harvest celebration, which will be donated
to the Callington Food bank. We were very pleased to see so many of you last week and we hope
you enjoyed listening to the children singing.
Honey Fair Art Competition
Well done to all the children for the wonderful entries in this years Honey Fair art
competition. We had some great results in each year group, which were as follows:
Merle Hardy (yr 2) - 3rd, Mikayla Bailey (yr 2) - 1st, Bluebell Yoshihara-Coles (yr 5) - 1st,
Martha O’Byrne (yr 5) - 3rd, Evie Talling (yr 6) 4th.
Well done to all these children, on top of these great results, Calstock School came 2nd in the overall
competition with the prize of £40 for the school.
Parent Consultations
Parent consultations are on Thursday 10 November. Appointments can be booked in the
office, from Wednesday 3 November. If you are unable to make this date please see your
child’s teacher to make arrangements at a mutually convenient time.
Name it all please!
Please ensure that your child’s name is written
in/on all their school clothing, and check from
time to time that the name hasn’t faded. The
little ones are particularly prone to misplacing
clothing and one small Calstock jumper looks
much like another.

There will be a special bonfire menu on
Friday 4 November, which will be as follows:
Fish and Chips
or
Sausage and chips
or
Mediterranean Tart with Cous Cous

Sports Report
Football: We had a good match against All Saints
on Monday with a score of 6—2 to the
opposition. The team played really well with Ben
Hutchings being named man of the match. Special
mention goes to Noah Dorgan who scored his first
goal in a game for Calstock and Angus Black, who
played really well in his first football match.
Netball: We played two games on Thursday. In the
competitive league we had a great game against
Callington and won 8-3, Ben Hutchings was named
man of the match. We also had a team playing
Stoke Climsland in the participation league, again
everyone played really well with a final score of
6-5 to Calstock. Jessica Barnes was named man
of the match.
Cross Country: The first cross country took place
last Friday at Great Trethew. All the
children who took part ran well, with Archie Chalk
coming 7th in his race.
Well done to all the runners.
School field
I thought it would be useful to update you on the use of the school field out of hours. Last Tuesday we had a
very constructive meeting between parents of children who regularly use the field and one of our
neighbours, who explained some of the problems he had experienced over recent weeks. These
included footballs kicked into his garden, sometimes deliberately, and resultant breakages to lighting and
plant pots and children entering his garden without asking and sometimes being rude when
challenged. Parents who attended were keen to ensure that children behaved responsibly and
politely. All parties were keen to work together to keep the field available to the children and to avoid
nuisance to the neighbours.
We have had some further issues, including the stakes securing the goals having been pulled out and lost
and the ground around the goals being over-used and muddy. Our thanks to Jack S, who came and helped
Mrs Liddicott pin the goals down again and made them safe for use.
I am happy to continue with the trial period we had given the children; up until the end of half term they are
free to use the school field without restriction. However, to make a success of this we need children to use
the field responsibly. If your child does play on the school field, please support us talking to them. Please
also pass this message on to the parents of ex-pupils who use the field. Rather than bring in complicated
rules and restrictions, we would just ask that the children show consideration. This would
include: moving football games further down the field, always knocking the door and asking politely if they
would like to retrieve a lost ball, not cutting through the hedge at the far end of the field, not swearing or
shouting, stopping play if the field is wet and likely to be churned up, not playing from dawn to dusk on
weekends and holidays as there is inevitably some noise even from the best mannered footballers.
I will check in with neighbours after half term and decide whether we can continue free access or whether
we need to bring in restrictions again. Our pupils (and ex-pupils) are a great bunch; while I have been really
disappointed to hear of the problems a few of them have caused, I am sure that with parental support we
can get all the children involved to take responsibility for their actions and keep the field available as a
community resource.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Poppy Appeal
When we return from the half term holiday we will be selling poppies and wrist bands
to raise money for the poppy appeal. Please send in donations to go towards this
very worthwhile cause. Thank you
