In her first days she begins dirty dancing with the Devil.
Then she makes out with him. A story of independence,

I Can’t Tell You
After he opens his big mouth in a big fight with his best
friend, Jake concludes that talking = trouble. He decides that
communicating through writing is safer. But there are also
the notes he never sends. To his flirty friend. Who is just a
friend. But could be more than a friend. But isn’t — or is she?
Hillary Frank’s inventive style envelopes her readers in a new
dimension of storytelling. Jake + Xandra = a story about what
it means to be “just friends.” All without saying a word.
“Ultimately, the novel’s engaging jumble of correspondence
amounts to a study of vulnerability, tentatively concluding
that, when it comes to romance, playing it safe can be a risky
approach. — Horn Book
Shakespeare Stories
Illustrated by Michael Foreman
By skillfully weaving his own prose with Shakespeare’s language, Leon Garfield has refashioned twelve of the Elizabethan
playwright’s most memorable dramas into stories, capturing
all the richness of the characters, plot, mood, and setting. This
format will delight both those who know the great dramatist’s
works and those who are new to them. Michael Foreman’s
dramatic color illustrations and varied black-and-white line
drawings are the perfect complement to this celebration of
Shakespeare’s genius.

The Giver
Twelve-year-old Jonas lives in a seemingly ideal world. Not until
he is given his life assignment as the Receiver does he begin to
understand the dark secrets behind this fragile community. “In
a departure from her well-known and favorably regarded realistic works, Lowry has written a fascinating, thoughtful sciencefiction novel. The story takes place in a nameless, utopian
community, at an unidentified future time. Although life seems
perfect — there is no hunger, no disease, no pollution, no fear
— the reader becomes uneasily aware that all is not well. “The
story is skillfully written; the air of disquiet is delicately insinuated; and the theme of balancing the values of freedom and
security is beautifully presented.” — Horn Book Guide

Australia has been invaded. Nothing is as it was. Six teenagers
are living out their nightmare in the sanctuary of a hidden

what is theirs, and struggle for courage and hope in a world
changed forever. Intense, passionate, and compulsive, The
Dead of Night continues the frighteningly real story begun

story is riveting because he makes it feel so real . . . edge-ofthe-seat action.” — Horn Book

When Ellie and six of her friends return home from a camping trip deep in the bush, they find things hideously wrong
— their families gone, houses empty and abandoned, pets

The Fellowship of the Ring, part one of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic
masterpiece, was first published in the United States on October 21, 1954, arriving, as C. S. Lewis proclaimed, “like lightning from a clear sky.” Fifty years and nearly one hundred
million American readers later comes a beautiful new one-volume collector’s edition befitting the stature of this crown jewel
of our list. With a text fully corrected under the supervision of
Christopher Tolkien to meet the author’s exacting wishes, two
large-format fold-out maps, a ribbon placemarker, gilded page
edges, a color insert depicting Tolkien’s own paintings of the
Book of Mazarbul, and exceptionally elegant and sturdy overall packaging housed within an attractive slipcase, this edition
is the finest we’ve ever produced.

The Silmarillion
A number-one New York Times bestseller when it was originally published, The Silmarillion is the core of J.R.R. Tolkien’s
imaginative writing, a work whose origins stretch back to a
time long before The Hobbit. The Silmarillion is the history of
the rebellion of Feanor and his kindred against the gods, their
exile from Valinor and return to Middle-earth, and their war,
hopeless despite all their heroism, against the great Enemy.
This second edition features a letter written by Tolkien
describing his intentions for the book, which serves as a brilliant exposition of his conception of the earlier Ages of
Middle-earth.
Peter
Pressured by everyone to conform to the stereotyped macho
image, fifteen-year-old Peter feels both confused and repelled.
His confusion and his horror increase when he finds himself

to be true to oneself. “An insightful and profoundly caring

Jim Murphy
Clarion Books
JIM MURPHY was the managing editor for Clarion Books from 1970 to 1977. Now he is the well-respected and
award-winning author of more than thirty books for young readers about American history, including An American Plague, which received the 2004 Newbery Honor, the Robert J. Sibert Informational Book Award, the Orbis
Pictus Award, and a National Book Award Finalist medal.
As a child, Jim didn’t have much time for or interest in reading—that is until a teacher named a book the students were absolutely forbidden to read. Rushing to see what the fuss was all about, Jim first read the forbidden
book and then kept on reading—anything he could get his hands on. He held several offbeat jobs before becoming a writer (including boiler repairperson, chain-link fence installer, roofer, and plastics-factory worker), and
those varied interests have helped him to create a wide range of entertaining, provocative, and multi-layered
books for young readers. Jim, his wife, Alison, and their two sons live in Maplewood, New Jersey.

Scott O’Dell
Houghton Mifflin Books for Children
SCOTT O’DELL (1898–1989), one of the most respected authors of historical fiction, received the Newbery
Medal, three Newbery Honor awards, and the Hans Christian Andersen Author Medal, the highest international
recognition for a body of work for young readers.
Scott O’Dell’s books have entertained and enlightened millions of readers around the world. Children with a
thirst for adventure and a love of nature are drawn to his stories of young people whose survival depends on determination and self-reliance.
When discussing his process for creating books, Scott O’Dell said, “The research for a book usually takes two
or three months, the writing another six months. Research is what I enjoy most. I often write of events, people,
and backgrounds that I know little about, just because I want to know more.” This thirst for knowledge led to
some of the most popular and successful books of historical fiction.
In 1984, he established the Scott O’Dell Award for Historical Fiction, which is given each year to the best historical novel for children.

Special
Special is a chilling look into the secret lives of a group of adolescent girls when a simple field trip to the country reveals a

sex, Bella Bathurst’s debut novel shines a glaring light on
teenage girls willing to do anything for power and acceptance.
Saints of Big Harbour
Lynn Coady gives us the unforgettable Guy Boucher, a
fatherless teenager and recluse who finds himself at the center
of an ugly rumor. Several versions of truth emerge and collide

The funny, heart-warming story of Roxanne Fish, a girl growing up in 1950s Iowa in a Bible-quoting Pentecostal family
who devoutly believe that the second coming could happen
any day. With a comic yet tender touch, Rhoda Huffey
chronicles Roxanne’s coming of age as she races the clock to
be counted among the saved.
The Namesake
By the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Interpreter of Maladies, Lahiri’s New York Times best-selling debut novel is a
quietly beautiful family portrait that explores themes of identity, cultural disorientation, and belonging.

Shoeless Joe
“If you build it, he will come.” These mysterious words of an
Iowa baseball announcer lead Ray Kinsella to carve a baseball

legend Shoeless Joe Jackson. The book that inspired the film
Field of Dreams is a classic of American literature.
Gilgamesh

MCCULLERS, CARSON
Laughing Boy
First published by Houghton Mifflin in 1929, this Pulitzer
prize–winning novel is available for the first time as a trade
paperback. Capturing the timeless essence of the southwest in
1915, Laughing Boy is an endearing classic of a young Navajo
couple experiencing the joys and uncertainties of first love.
Collected Stories
Here are nineteen stories that explore McCullers’s signature
themes: wounded adolescence, loneliness in marriage, and
the tragicomedy of life in the South. Included in this volume
are “The Member of the Wedding” and “The Ballad of the
Sad Cafe,” novellas that Tennessee Williams judged to be
“assuredly among the masterpieces of our language.”

MORRIS, WILLIE
The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter
First published in 1940, this is an American classic that tells
the unforgettable tale of moral isolation in a small Georgia
mill town in the 1930s. The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter is Carson
McCullers at her most compassionate, most endearing best,
and her novel proves just as timely and powerful today as
when it was first published.
Taps
This novel takes one last fictional journey to Willie Morris’s
South and spins a tender, powerful, very American story
about the fleeting boyhood of a young man coming of age at
the dawn of the Korean War.

MORRISSEY, DONNA
The Member of the Wedding
“Rarely has emotional turbulence been so delicately conveyed,” said the New York Times of Carson McCullers’s classic
tale about Frankie Addams, a bored twelve-year-old madly
jealous of her brother’s impending marriage. First published
in 1946, this Mariner edition is the only paperback now
available.
Downhill Chance
Set in a pair of isolated outpost communities in preConfederation Newfoundland in the bleak years during and
after World War II, Downhill Chance is the dramatic story of
two families, the Osmonds and the Gales. Epic, passionate,
raw, and full of Newfoundland life and culture, Downhill
Chance is a “captivating successor” to Kit’s Law.

If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things
Jon McGregor pays rapt attention to every minute detail of
the inhabitants on a small urban street. The peace and tranquility of the day are shattered when the street becomes the
scene of a terrible accident, the details of which are hinted at,
but not revealed, until the final pages.
A Stranger in the Kingdom
A Stranger in the Kingdom tells the unforgettable story of a
brutal murder in a small town and the devastating events that
follow. The New York Times called it “reminiscent of To Kill a

MOSHER, HOWARD FRANK
Kit’s Law
Fans of Alice Hoffman will adore Donna Morrissey’s pageturning first novel, a coming-of-age story with an unexpected
twist and mystery, containing “all the old-fashioned virtues: a
vivid sense of place, an intricate and suspenseful plot, and
a feisty heroine whom we can’t help rooting for on every
page.”—Margot Livesey
The True Account
Howard Frank Mosher’s first book set outside of Kingdom
County, Vermont, is a tall tale of impossibilities. Private True
Teague Kennison sets out to beat Lewis and Clark to the
Pacific, in a journey he believes he has already made, only in
reverse. Funny, and filled with flamboyant characters, The
True Account makes a return to the kind of writing that so
enamored fans to Disappearances.

This Is Not Civilization
A stunning debut novel that tells the parallel stories of two

bighearted debut transforms Rosenberg’s own experiences as a
Peace Corps volunteer in Asia Minor and the American Southwest into an absorbing . . . tale of economic crisis and cultural
incompatibility.”—Kirkus Reviews

All-Bright Court
An honest portrayal of an African-American family, the Taylors, living in a colorfully painted but crumbling housing
project near Buffalo, New York. The miracle of this heartbreaking story is its warmth in the face of tragic disappointment.
The Book of Salt
Inspired by a footnote in the Alice B. Toklas Cookbook,
Monique Truong creates a rich and beautiful story told from
the point of view of a young Vietnamese man who becomes
the cook for Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. Offering an
insider’s view into the fabled literary household, Monique
