A few weeks ago, I was home, it was Sunday afternoon, it was raining, it was cold. I was trapped inside for what seemed like days - actually it was just a few hours, but it seemed like a lot longer. There was nothing on TV, the kids were shockingly playing quietly amongst each other. I was bored. I wasn’t hungry, I was just bored. So without even realizing it, I found myself looking thru the refrigerator and the cabinets for a snack. Potato chips, Doritos, ice cream, pop tarts, crackers, cookies, etc. Sound familiar? So not only are most things in our cupboards not healthy, we tend to eat too much of these unhealthy things. Check out what “one serving” is for these items: Thin Mint cookies (the girl scout variety): one serving is 4 cookies. 4 cookies! What a joke. If you can eat only 4 thin mints, more power to you. So one serving is 160 calories, 70 of those calories are from fat. One serving has 5g of saturated fat - that’s 25% of your daily total. YIKES! So if you’re like most people and have 8-12 of these little treats, you just consumed 320-480 calories and 50-75% of your daily allotted saturated fat. Not good. Ice cream: one serving is ½ cup. Really? ½ cup is like 2 spoonful's. Anyway, one serving is 130 calories, 20% of your daily fat. If you are like most, then you probably fill up your bowl - now we’re talking more like 500-600 calories and 80-90% of your daily fat - in this one little snack. Reduced fat potato chips - ok, doesn’t sound too bad. 140 calories , 5% saturated fat. But you’ve got to be careful, one serving is only 13 chips. OK, one more - peanut butter. Whether you put it on crackers or on bread, 200 calories per serving, 15% of your daily saturated fat. And here’s the kicker - guess what ‘one serving’ is. 2 tablespoons. Next chance you get, check out how much (or how little) 2 tablespoons is. I’ll save you some suspense - it’s not much. Most of us just spread it on until the bread is covered. That could add up to WAY more calories and fat than you thought. So, what did we learn? Number 1 - be careful of falling into the “boredom eater” trap. Keep busy. Find something to do other than rummaging thru the fridge. Number 2 - READ LABELS. Find out what “one serving” is and measure it out. Only takes a minute. It’s worth it. Number 3 - even if it says “reduced fat” or “low calorie”, still measure out one serving. They may be trying to trick you. Good luck! And as always, feel free to contact me with any health or fitness related questions. Yoga Classes Want to feel less stressed?
