MISSION STATEMENT
The Wildcats Gymnastics Team strives to provide quality instruction, individual
attention, a safe environment, and program growth. This is achieved by providing
innovative coaching techniques, supportive parental involvement, and integration of
the YMCA core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. We strive to
reflect sportsmanship in our daily activities. Each child is given the opportunity to
develop physically, emotionally, mentally, and socially through fun, safe, and
productive activities. We provide an open line of communication with gymnasts and
parents.
GOALS
o
o
o
o
To promote a fun, exciting, long term experience to each and every gymnast.
To promote independence and self-discipline through challenging activities.
To promote team spirit through cooperative team building techniques.
To guide each gymnast in developing his or her own immediate, short-term,
and long term goals.
PHILOSOPHY
Gymnastics helps children become stronger, more flexible, and have better
endurance, agility, coordination, balance, and speed.
Gymnastics enables children to excel at many other sports and activities in life.
Research has proven that strength training for children is highly beneficial and is one
of the most important means available for long term health.
Gymnastics encourages children to concentrate and be focused. Each child’s unique
learning style and needs will be respected.

[email protected].
If you decide to leave the team for reasons other than a documented injury, a fee
equal to 50% of the missed team tuition must be paid in order to re-join the team
and activities.
All balances from the previous season must be paid prior to registering for
the new season. Accounts must remain in good standing in order to
register for competitions.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
The North Shore YMCA welcomes everyone’s involvement by providing financial
assistance through two initiatives: The Membership for All and the Access program.
Applications are available at the front desk. Membership for All and Access
programs apply to team tuition only. It is the responsibility of the parent or guardian
to apply for assistance before the start of each season.
PARTICIPANT FEE
NEW FOR 2015-2016
The Greater Beverly YMCA gymnastics team is discontinuing the practice of
extensive fundraising and replacing it with a gymnast participant fee.
This annual fee is required of all Wildcats athletes. This fee replaces extensive
fundraising the team has required in the past, and will help to defray the expenses
incurred specifically by the team. These expenses include but are not limited to
equipment used only by team members, coaches' stipends, mileage, training and
hotel expenses, as well as team and holiday celebrations, senior scholarships and
hospitality. This participation fee is non-refundable. Amounts paid to date will not
be returned if an athlete leaves the team program for any reason during the year.
The fee for competitive gymnasts on levels 3-9 and all Xcel gymnasts is $200 for the
year. This can be paid in full at the beginning of the year or in two equal payments.
The first payment is due September 30th. The second payment is due
February 28th.
All Pre-Team, Level 1, 2 and Trampoline and Tumbling gymnasts will incur a
participation fee of $100 per year and can also be paid either in full at the beginning
or in two payments following the same schedule as previously mentioned.
Fees will automatically be applied to the gymnast’s account and can be paid online
or in person at any time prior to the deadlines. Gymnasts must be in good financial
standing in order to attend competitions and participate in team activities.
Gymnasts and families attending Nationals will continue to fundraise throughout the
year, as these expenses are specific to the trip. In anticipation of a larger nationals
team for 2016, Nationals fundraising will begin early in the season.
If you have questions regarding the gymnast participation fee, please contact Rob
Hunt at [email protected] or Judith Cronin at
[email protected].

Competition leotards change every two years. We are currently in the second year
of the style rotation and will be changing for the 2016-2017 season. Every gymnast
must purchase the team leotard and warm up in order to compete.
Competition warm ups have been the same for many years, and are changing for
the 2015-16 season and beyond.
Pre Team leotards will remain the same as in recent seasons. No warm ups are
required at the Pre Team, Level 1 or Level 2.
Leotard and warm ups are custom made and are ordered well before competition
season. To keep costs down, all items will be placed as one order in late summer.
Individual orders will require their own shipping and handling charges and will be
billed at a higher rate, based on manufacturer’s schedule and quantity rates
(approximately 25% more).
PRACTICE AND COMPETITION GUIDELINES
Please read the following section carefully. The guidelines included within:
★ help to make practices and competitions safe
★ ensure that all children are treated equally and without favoritism
★ ensure that the YMCA and the Wildcats are represented positively by both
parents and gymnasts
★ teach the YMCA core values and good sportsmanship. Parents and gymnasts
will be expected to follow these guidelines at all meets and practices.
Gymnasts – Practice Guidelines
o All gymnasts will behave in accordance with the YMCA Core Values of Caring,
Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
o Gymnasts are expected to give 100% effort at every practice.
o Call or email your coach when you will be late or absent from practice. If too
much practice time is missed during the competition season, the coaches may
not allow the gymnast to compete for safety reasons.
o Make every effort to be on time for warm up and stretch.
o Wear proper attire to every practice: GIRLS--Leotards, stud earrings only,
socks and running shoes. BOYS--athletic shorts or pants and T-shirt, socks
and running shoes. If you are not in proper attire, you may not be allowed to
practice that day.
o For safety reasons, all competing gymnasts must attend the majority of the
practices the week before a meet. Eligibility to attend a competition will
be at the discretion of the head coach.
o Long hair must be kept in a pony tail.
o Bring water, grips, pre-wrap and athletic tape to every practice.
o No chewing gum, food or drink is allowed past “the wall.”
o Coaches have the right to dismiss a gymnast from practice for any of the
following reasons; injury without proper documentation, exhaustion, poor
health/nutrition, excessive sunburn, or lack of mental focus
7
Gymnasts – Competition Guidelines
o All gymnasts will behave in accordance with the YMCA Core Values of Caring,
Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
o Gymnasts may compete in all events to which they are fully prepared. Safety
is of utmost importance. The coach, at his or her discretion, may determine
which events are not safe for the individual to compete.
o Please arrive 15 minutes early to all meets. Bring a water bottle, snack, tape,
and grips.
o Upon entering the competition arena, gymnasts must be in full uniform
(including warm ups) with hair done and all nail polish removed.
o CELL PHONE USE is not permitted in competitive area.
o Gymnasts will be vocally supportive and display team pride by showing
sportsmanship to teammates and competitors. Gymnasts will remain in meet
attire throughout the entire event including the award ceremony.
o Crying gymnasts will be asked to leave the competitive arena.
o Score keeping will be strongly discouraged by coaches.
o All team members are reminded that when traveling on trips, competing in
meets, and attending other team-related functions, they are representing
both themselves and the Wildcats team. Their behavior must reflect the high
standards of the team.
o Coaches have the right to dismiss a gymnast from competition for any of the
following reasons; injury without proper documentation, exhaustion, poor
health/nutrition, excessive sunburn, or lack of mental focus.
Parents – Practice Guidelines
o Parents play a key role in the Wildcats Gymnastics Team. We welcome you to
come and observe practice to see your child’s hard work in action during our
Peek Weeks. Peek Week is the 2nd week of every month. However, there are
guidelines that we must impose for safety and well being of gymnasts.
o All parents will behave in accordance with the YMCA core values of caring,
honesty, respect and responsibility.
o If you wish to discuss your child’s progress with their coach please do so
briefly before or after practice. If you require a longer discussion, please
arrange that meeting through the head coach rather than interrupt practice
time.
o Please remain on the bleachers during Peek Weeks. Parents/siblings are not
allowed on the gymnastics floor.
o Allow your child’s coach to coach. Coaching or yelling from the sidelines will
not be permitted. Distracting the gymnasts and coaches is potentially
dangerous to gymnasts and coaches.
o Please ensure that your communication with the coaches is respectful. If you
require additional information your child’s coach cannot provide, please speak
to the head coach.
o Coaches have the right to dismiss a gymnast from practice for any of the
following reasons; injury without proper documentation, exhaustion, poor
health/nutrition, excessive sunburn, or lack of mental focus.

a gym hosting a meet. All communication should be directed through the
gymnastics office.
o PARENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE COMPETITION AREA. Please do
not distract or call to your child, interrupt the coaches, or talk to the meet
director or judges.
These are strict rules set and enforced by the YMCA and USAG . Breaking
such rules comes with a penalty of a 1 point team deduction and removal
of the gymnast and parent from the competition area.
o If you need to communicate something very important with your child during
a meet, contact a meet worker to help you.
9
o
o
For the safety of the gymnasts, flash photography is NEVER allowed during
competition. Flash pictures may be taken during awards.
Please remember: We attempt to teach the gymnasts proper motivation and
improvement strategies. Winning is not everything. Our goal is to have fun,
show our best, and try to improve from past performances.

The following actions may be taken for violation by a gymnast.
o The head coach has the right to remove any gymnasts from practice for
poor behavior.
o Parents will be notified and gymnast will be asked to leave.
o Gymnast may be restricted from attending upcoming meets or events.
o Gymnast may be temporarily or permanently dismissed from the team.
Violation of Guidelines For Parents:
The following actions may be taken for violation by a parent.
o Dismissal from the gym or competitive arena
o Prohibition from attending future meets and/or practices
o Temporary or permanent dismissal of parent and child from the team
COMPETITION INFORMATION
The Wildcats Gymnastics Team is unique in that it competes in YMCA and USA gymnastics.
There are many differences between these two organizations. It is important to have a
discussion with a member of the coaching staff to make informed decisions about
participation in USAG meets and/or YMCA meets.
General Competition Information
o The team will host and attend several meets each year. The season’s meet schedule
will give an overview of upcoming meets and their locations. The cost of meets
varies. You will receive a copy of the proposed schedule.
o To register for a YMCA meet, you must register online and pay via your online
account. Please plan ahead!!! There may not be an email reminding you of the
deadline.
o Requests for refunds cannot be honored once the roster has been sent to the hosting
gym of YMCA meets. There are no longer “scratch dates” for YMCA meets. Once a
gymnast commits to a meet, funds cannot be returned or credited towards other
meets. (League rule established as of August 2013)
o All YMCA gymnasts who wish to participate in YMCA Championship meets (States and
Regionals) must participate in at least 2 YMCA meets per season. (League rule as of
August 2015)

plaques, and individual medals. Some type of keepsake is usually offered. Cost $90.00
Regional Championships: This is a YMCA competition for teams in the Northeast Region.
Gymnasts must qualify for this meet by competing in YMCA at least twice in the season and
by attaining a certain individual all around score at two meets prior to Regional
Championships. A gymnast’s YMCA States score can be one of the two qualifying all around
scores. Awards given at this meet are team trophies, individual trophies or plaques, and
individual medals. Some type of keepsake usually included. COST $95.00 plus hotel, travel
and food.
National Championships: This is a YMCA competition for levels 6-9 and Xcel Platinum and
Xcel Diamond. Each gymnast must qualify once prior to Regionals. At this competition, we
compete against teams from all across the nation. The competition will be held in Long
Beach, California this year. Awards given at this meet are team awards, individual event
medals and All American Awards for levels 8 and 9/10 Championship only. Individual event
and all around medals are awarded within the session only for levels 6, 7 and Xcel Platinum
and Diamond. The COST is approximately $150.00 plus hotel, travel, apparel, spectator
tickets, team dinner, coaching fees and meals. Participation in all National fundraisers
throughout the year is required of all Nationals gymnasts and families. Each family
will be required to raise their portion of the funds necessary for team expenses or pay the
remaining amount out of pocket. More information will be made available at mandatory
nationals meetings. Planning for 2016 Nationals will start extra early this year in anticipation
of a much larger group travelling to Long Beach, California.
The North Shore Wildcats Preteam, Level 1 and Level 2 gymnasts may be attending
one or two “Mini Meets” during the year. The purpose of a Mini Meet is to expose gymnasts
to the competitive experience and gain confidence in front of a judge and an audience.
Information will be emailed to the parents when it becomes available.
11
**USAG COMPETITIONS
Competing in USAG is not a requirement for compulsory or optional teams.
Gymnasts who choose to participate must attend the meets for which they qualify.
Second year Level 3 gymnasts and all 4-9 and Xcel Silver, Gold, Platinum and
Diamond gymnasts are eligible to compete in USAG competitions. The Wildcats will
attend meets in which three or more gymnasts from the level have committed to
attend.
Spectator Fees:
Spectators attending USAG meets are required to pay an admission fee. These fees
are a necessary part of the host’s ability to hold quality events. Hosting teams often
rent arena space, pay for security and rent equipment. Please arrive prepared to
pay in cash. Remember that meet workers are volunteers and should be treated
respectfully. Please remind your guests that we are representing the Wildcats and
the YMCA and should uphold the proper standards. Reports of poor behavior may
result in disciplinary action described previously in the Parent Competition Guidelines
section.
USAG Membership required:
USAG gymnasts must be members of the USA Gymnastics Association and renew
their membership annually. Along with their membership, they will receive a
subscription to a gymnastics magazine. The annual cost is $54 for all levels,
including XCEL. Checks for USAG membership should be made to “YMCA of the
North Shore” not USAG, or you may pay via your YMCA online account. The office
staff will apply this charge to your account after receiving your “intent to compete”
online form.
Qualifiers: Occasionally, our team will participate in smaller meets to attempt to
qualify for a sectional meet. Gymnasts must obtain a certain individual all around
score. Awards given at this meet are ribbons which are given out at the end of the
meet or at a practice following the meet. The decision to attend a qualifier meet will
be made by the Team Director based on scheduling, coach availability and number
of athletes interested in attending. Approximate cost $70.00
12
Theme Meets/Invitational Meets: Gymnasts may use these meets to qualify for a
sectional meet. Sometimes, these meets can be counted as a sectional meet where
gymnasts can qualify for States. The Director and Team Coordinator will handle the
registration paperwork needed to use an Invitational as a Sectional. Awards given at this
meet are team trophies, individual trophies and individual medals. Some type of keepsake is
usually included. Approximate cost $90-130.
Sectional Meet: Occasionally, our gymnasts will attend a sectional meet (not included on
the original Meet Schedule). A gymnast must qualify for this meet one time by reaching a
certain individual all around score.
Cost $75.00
State Meet: Gymnasts must qualify for this meet at a sectional meet by attaining a specific
individual all around score. Awards given are team and individual trophies. Cost is
approximately $100.
PRIVATE COACHING
Private and semi-private coaching is available! Your child can receive additional
instruction from a coach. Rates for private coaching are:
$20 per ½ hour
$40 per hour
13
LEVEL PLACEMENT
Gymnasts will be placed on a level in which they have consistently demonstrated the
ability to perform the majority of skills required for that level. Gymnasts should
expect to repeat levels throughout their gymnastics careers. The sport of
gymnastics is not similar to a school experience in which a student, “moves up” a
level each year and repeating a grade is considered, “staying back.” A gymnast who
repeats level 5 will continue to perfect her level 5 skills, gain confidence and
strength, all while working level 6 skills. Rushing an athlete into a higher level at
which they are not fully qualified results in frustration, mental blocks, lack of
concentration and worst of all, injuries. Although it may not be obvious to the
gymnast, coaches continually evaluate each gymnast’s readiness to progress and
obtain skills. It is important that the gymnasts and their families trust the system
that is in place to keep them healthy and on track towards a successful long-term
career in gymnastics.
WILDCAT WEAR
Wildcat wear may be ordered during the year. These are optional purchases. Order
forms, pricing and due dates will be distributed when it is time to order. Please
consider purchasing Wildcat Wear to give as a gift for your gymnast or to show your
own pride and support of the North Shore Wildcats!
COMMUNICATION
Good communication is vital to any organization. We have established multiple
channels of communication.
Website: If you have questions, your first sources of reliable information are this
handbook and the team website. On the website, you will find news, team activities,
cancellations, directions and information for upcoming meets, and lots, lots more!
E-mail: This is the most effective way to communicate information between the
gymnastics office and gymnasts, parents, and coaches. Please check your email
inbox frequently. Be sure to add our email addresses to your address book. This
will ensure your email provider will not reject communications. A listing of team
staff and coaches is included in this handbook. If you change your email address
during the year, please contact us in writing with the new information. If you do
not have access to the internet, please inquire at the office to discuss the
best way to keep you informed of all news and events.
Level Representatives: The names of our level representatives will be posted on
the team website. These individuals will be in contact with you regarding updates,
volunteering and activities. You may contact your level rep or office staff with
questions. Level reps attend Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) meetings and are
part of the planning process and therefore are a reliable source of accurate
information.
14
INJURY POLICY
Gymnastics involves motion, rotation and height in a unique environment and such
assumes a reasonable assumption of risk. Great care is taken to strengthen, train
and prepare for the sport. However, in the event of injury, it is advised that the
athlete seek the advice of a physician to properly diagnose the injury. Proper
documentation is required to excuse from or adjust a gymnast’s training. Likewise,
the gymnast must provide documentation from the physician to return to practice
and competition. It is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to inform the
Gymnastics Director of any limitations the physician has imposed in order to prevent
further injury.
VOLUNTEERING
Participating in the success of the program is required of
every Wildcat family!!
Families are asked to volunteer at all meets hosted by our gym. It does not
need to be a parent who helps out during the meet. Many siblings and grandparents
volunteer their time and are very helpful! However, many of the positions do
require the help of adults, so please volunteer at least once per home meet.
www.volunteerspot.com
We utilize Volunteerspot.com as a means for volunteers to sign up for home meet
tasks. A link will be provided on the team website for each meet we host. This link
will bring you directly to the event. We are very proud to be known as a gym that
hosts successful, fun, well attended meets. Your support is needed and is greatly
appreciated!
During home meets, we sell leotards, run a food table and offer raffles to
raise money for the team. Each family is asked to contribute a food item to the
food table. For your convenience, these jobs are listed on the Volunteerspot
website. Additionally, you may be asked to donate an item or cash towards a raffle
basket.
The Parent Advisory Committee meets on the first Thursday of the month at
6:30pm. The committee is a dedicated group of parent volunteers who help with
fundraising, team expenditures and other concerns. These meetings are a great
opportunity to get involved with the program. New people and new ideas are
always welcome! If you would like more information, please contact Eva Van Ness,
Gymnastics Director, at 978-564-3903 or [email protected]
