TASK:
You have been asked to
develop an agreement that
young people and their
parents/carers can use to set
out their roles, to help young
people get home safely.
EXAMPLE
Getting home sa
fely
agreement
If I am ever in a condition that
might render me less
than 100% competent behind the
wheel of a car, or
I am a passenger in a car in whic
h the driver should
not be driving, the following agre
ement applies.
Design a ‘getting
home safely’ agreement
Part A:
1You will always try to be avai
lable to come
and get me, no matter where I
am or what
time it is.
1. Complete the Planning how
to get home safely sheet by
choosing at least two situations
where a young person would
need to plan ahead to get
home safely.
2. Design an agreement that
outlines the responsibilities
of both the young person
and their parents/carers. The
agreement should have at least
five (5) clear statements or
conditions.
3. Include a space for the young
person to identify at least three
other people who can help get
them home safely.
4. There should be provision for
both the young person and
parents/guardians to sign and
date the agreement.
2If you can’t come and get me,
I can call a
taxi. You will pay for it and I will
pay you
back.

Choose at least two situations where
a young person would need to have
plans in place to make sure they
arrived home safely.
Complete each section of the above
table.
1.
2.
I will call a taxi to get home if I am not 100% capable of driving my car.
You will pay for the taxi and I will pay you back.

•
For example, if you identified ‘calling a taxi’ as a strategy that could be used
to get home safely, write a clear statement in the agreement such as:
What other things might
need to be considered?
Consider the information you have listed in the table above when designing
your ‘getting home’ agreement.
Costs? (eg taxi fare and phone call)
3.
Situation?
Strategies?
Who could offer help?
(eg call a taxi)
(eg parent, Nan)
Young people may have the best intentions to not drive after drinking alcohol or
using other drugs, however several factors can influence this intention.
Planned events are more likely to have pre-arranged alternatives to drink driving.
Impromptu events involve less prior planning.
Young people often attend events which may be planned (eg 18th birthday parties,
New Year’s Eve celebrations or football grand finals) or impromptu (eg running into
some friends and going to the pub for a drink).
