On the following pages you’ll find a series of exercises that will introduce you to charting tools in Thomson Reuters Eikon. Each exercise is marked with this icon, along with a summary of the exercise. Just follow the instructions in the left hand column to complete the exercise. Visuals are provided in the right hand column to guide you and to show you what your screen should look like. BEFORE YOU START The Thomson Reuters Eikon Home Page displays the most relevant information based on your job role. Some of the examples in this workbook are based on a Home Page tailored for an FX and Interest Rates Portfolio Manager. If you want to follow our examples exactly then you should set your Home Page to display Fixed Income information. 1. 2. 3. 4. Navigate to My Eikon My Profile. Click the Edit link in the Professional Profile section. Select FX and Interest Rates Portfolio Manager from the list of Job Roles. Click Save. Your Home Page will update to display FX information. 3 VIEWING CHARTS ON THE HOME PAGE You can view a number of pre-built charts from your Thomson Reuters Eikon Home page. . In this activity you’ll learn how to access pre-built charts from the Thomson Reuters Eikon Home page. The Homepage provides workflow-relevant information for the job role selected in your profile. Here we are looking at a Homepage for an FX and Interest Rates Portfolio manager. Hover over the Key Rates chart to activate the View real-time icon. Click the real time icon and a real-time chart for Euro spot rates opens in a pop-up chart browser. Use the tabs to move between the Historical Chart, the Forecast Curve Chart, and a table displaying the underlying data. Open the Historical Chart now. The Quick Links includes easy access to a number of charting tools. This is a Foreign Exchange Homepage and displays related chart links. You will find charts within the Overview Pages for each asset class. Click the Chart FX Forecasts Quick Link to open the FX Forecasts Quick Chart. 4 Changes can be made to the period and interval by using the respective dropdowns. Change the Period to Six Months now. Changing the Forecast Statistic changes the Forecast line on the chart. Change the Forecast Statistic to Mean. Now click the Data tab to display the chart’s underlying data in tabular form. You can copy and paste this data straight into Excel, or export the data as a .CSV file, which you can import into another application. On the left-hand side of the Homepage you have access to overview pages for other Asset Classes. Open the Fixed Income Overview. The Fixed Income overview page contains an overview of key news headlines, instruments, and links relating to Fixed Income. Click the Market Data and Tools tab. Under the Charts heading you’ll find a list of Fixed Income pre-built charts. Click the link to the CDS Chart and the chart will open in a pop-out window. 5 CREATE A CHART IN A FLEX DOCUMENT You can use the Thomson Reuters Eikon Flex environment to build your own powerful charting and analysis tools. Create a new Flex Document using the Cross Asset Charting template. When you create a new Flex Document, you can choose from pre-built templates, or create your own from a blank template. We’ll create a Flex Document using the Cross Asset Charting template. To get started, open the Add menu. Then select Flex Document to open the Flex Samples screen. To open the Cross Asset Charting template, Select Cross Asset in the left column. Then select Charting. This will open the template. The Cross Asset Charting Flex Document displays four charts for each asset class. Use the tabs to view pre-built charts, showing data for Equities, Commodities, Fixed Income, and FX and Money. Let’s take a look at the FX and Money tab. 6 Here you’ll find analyses for the Euro/US Dollar spot rate. To display information for a different instrument, enter the Instrument Code in the command line. We’ll change the Tick Chart with MACD to show information for the Japanese Yen. Enter JPY= in the command line. Then press Enter. The chart will refresh to show real-time information for the Japanese Yen. Now we’ll see how to create a chart in a new Flex Document. Select the Blank Flex with 2 Vertical Frames. Then click Add Chart in any blank frame. The frame now contains a blank chart app. Type Microsoft in the command line. Autosuggest will return a list of matches. Click MSFT.O. A bar chart will be displayed. Press F6 to maximise the chart. You can customize the chart quickly with inplace editing. For example, you can manually overtype the start date, or click the arrow to pick a date from the calendar. We’ll change the chart type. Click Bar OHLC. We’ll scroll down and select Line. 7 The charting app gives you access to the underlying chart data. To view it, right click inside the chart. Then select View>Data Window. Or click the icon on the toolbar. Click Show All to view the chart data for all days included in the chart. Click the arrow in the date column to view the oldest dates at the top of the list. You can double click the Y-axis to edit the range of the chart. Or double click the X-axis to change the Chart properties and edit the X-Axis. Double click the X-axis now. The X-Axis Properties dialog appears. Here you can specify a start and end date, or restrict the display to a specific period. We’ll use the Properties dialog to create a Seasonal Chart. Click Display a Seasonal Chart. Then click OK to apply the changes and return to the chart. Note: If you have a Trading add-on you can trade directly from the chart. Click the Trade menu to activate your Trading addon. 8 CREATE A QUICK CHART IN A FLEX DOCUMENT Quick Charts make it easy to chart key data such as yield curves and economic indicators. In this activity, we’ll create an Economic Indicator Quick Chart that shows the month-on-month UK Retail Price Index. To create a Quick Chart, click Add Quick Charts in a blank Flex frame. Then select a chart template. Take a moment now to review the range of Quick Charts that are available. Once you’ve had a look, select Economic Indicator Quick Chart. A blank Economic Indicator Quick Chart now appears in your Flex Document. Click the Maximize icon to make the chart fill your workspace. Use the dropdowns to specify your first indicator. We’ll click Countries. Then United Kingdom. Next, open the Indicators dropdown. To find an Indicator quickly, start typing the Indicator name, and select an item from the suggested matches. We’ll, type Retail Price Index. Then select Retail Prices, by Commodity, All items. You can also amend the Analysis Settings. We’ll show the Absolute Change, year on year, as a Histogram. To do this, open the dropdown menu directly under Analysis Settings. Select Absolute Change. 9 Leave Histogram selected. Then click Add. You can compare up to four Economic Indicators. Click the Indicator 2 button now. Open the Indicators menu and select All Items excluding mortgage interest payments. Then click Add to update the chart. You can save your Analysis settings by clicking Favorites. Click Favorites now. A dialog will appear. Click Add to Favorites. Then close the dialog box. Now click the Data tab to view the underlying data. Select Export All to export the data as a CSV file, which you can then import into another application, such as Excel. Note: Although different Quick Charts cover different content, you’ll find they have a very similar interface and are just as easy to use 10 USING THE POP-IN AND POP-OUT FUNCTIONS Your Thomson Reuters Eikon Homepage has a number of pre-built charts, and the pop-in feature makes it easy to incorporate apps found on the Homepage into any Flex Document. You can also use the pop-out function to launch a chart in a pop-out window. Use the pop-in feature to embed a chart from the Thomson Reuters Eikon Home page in a Flex Document, and use the F10 function to launch a chart in a pop-out window. In this activity, we’ll embed a chart from the Home page in a Flex Document. Select a chart from the Quick Links section of the Home page. Then click the Pop in button and choose the Flex Document where you wish to insert the chart. To complete this activity you can select any open Flex Document, or create a New Blank Flex. The Quick Chart from the Homepage will then be embedded in the Flex Document. At any time, you can press F10 to launch a chart app. The chart app displays as a pop-up and is automatically populated with the active symbol – this is the last instrument code that you used. You can also launch a chart for a company in a pop-up using search and Auto Suggest. For example, type Oracle chart in the command line. Then click on the chart link in the Auto Suggest list. 11 USE EIKON ANSWERS TO CREATE A TECHNICAL ANALYSIS CHART Eikon Answers is a new natural language search that aims to provide direct answers to your questions. You can also use Eikon Answers to create instant technical charts. In this activity, you will create a short-term Relative Strength Index chart for a major retail stock. In this activity, you’ll search for an RSI chart based on 9-day periods for Tesco PLC. To do this, enter Tesco 9 day RSI into the search box and press Return. Eikon Answers will returns an RSI chart, with the most recent share price and the base currency displayed on the left. By default the chart covers the past 12 months, but you can view the price action over a range of pre-set periods, or use the sliders to define your own period. Click the More examples and details... link to view a page containing a list of links related to your search. Eikon Answers contains many types of charts, including simple moving average, MACD and Bollinger Bands. You can create charts for more than one instrument. We’re going to compare Tesco’s price action with Marks and Spencer, and add a 20-day simple moving average (SMA).Type Tesco and Marks and Spencer SMA 20 into the command line. 12 This takes us directly to a page containing the desired chart. The Feedback icons enable you to give instant feedback on your results. You can click the thumbs up or thumbs down icon to indicate whether the chart is what you were looking for. Or click the speech icon to send suggestions for improvements and new features to the Thomson Reuters Eikon team. 13 LINKING A QUOTE LIST WITH A TECHNICAL ANALYSIS CHART You can click a Quote list to a Quick Chart so that double-clicking any instrument in the Quote List will populate the Quick Chart with relevant data . In this activity, you will link a Quote List to a Technical Analysis Chart. Before beginning this exercise, create a twoframe Flex Document. Populate the frame at right with any Quote List. In the example at right, we used the constituents of the FTSE 100. Populate the frame at left with a blank Technical Analysis Quick Chart. (The process for creating a Quick Chart is covered in a previous section of this workbook.) To link the Quote List to the chart, right click. Then select Link To>Quick Charts> Advanced Link. Now select When I DOUBLE-CLICK a Quote List item, DISPLAY related data. Then click OK. Double-click on any instrument in the Quote List and the Quote list will update with information on the selected company. You can add analysis and annotations to the chart. Let’s add a Trendline and an annotation. Open the Trendline dropdown. You can add different types of lines to your chart. For this activity, select Line. 14 Use your cursor to draw a trendline. Then click the annotation icon on the toolbar. Click in the chart and drag your annotation field to the desired place. Then type the annotation into the annotation field. Now let’s save the Flex Document on the Thomson Reuters Drive. Click the Save icon. Choose Thomson Reuters Drive. Give your Flex Document a name and click Save. The text annotation and Trendline analysis will now stay associated with the selected company. Let’s see how this works. Double-click on any other entry in the Quote List. The chart will update with the new data. Now double click on the company with the trendline and annotation you just created. The text annotation and Trendline will reappear on the chart. 15 ADD ANALYSIS AND TRENDLINES TO A CHART Once you have embedded a chart in your Flex Document, you may wish to add further analyses. The Chart app offers a choice of over 100 Analysis types. In this activity, you will add a 30-day moving average to a chart for Microsoft. To begin this activity, create a blank Flex Document with two vertical frames. Add a chart into the frame at left. Type MSFT.O into the command line. Then press F6 to maximise the chart. Open the Analysis dropdown. Select Simple Moving Average. Use the resulting dialog to change the period to 30 days. The Moving Average will be added to the chart as an orange line. Now let’s add a Trendline. To do this, open the Trendline dropdown. Then choose Line. To add the Trendline, click on your start point, drag to your end point and release. Click and drag the handles to move the Trendline. Hover over any point to view a date and a price. If you need more help with Analyses or Trendlines, press F1 to open the online help tool. 16 USE RELATIVE PERFORMANCE INDEX You can use Thomson Reuters Eikon to perform Relative Performance comparisons, and compare the historical performance of two instruments within a defined time frame. In this example, we’ll compare the performance of an instrument against a market index. To begin this exercise, open a blank chart app in a Flex Document. Then click the Analysis icon on the chart toolbar to open the Insert Analysis dialog. Select Relative Performance Now insert the codes for the instruments. Start typing an instrument name to activate AutoSuggest. Type Peugeot and STOXX Europe 600 in the Instruments fields. Select the instrument codes for Peugeot ordinary shares and the STOXX Europe 600 Index. You can adjust the parameters. However, we’ll leave the defaults selected. Click Add, then Close to return to the chart. The data is returned. If the relative performance value is above 1, the first instrument is outperforming the second. If the value is below 1, then the first instrument is underperforming the second. You can also use the chart to analyze groups of stocks. For instance, you could use Relative Performance to see if the auto sector index is outperforming the bank sector index. 17 USE REBASING ANALYSIS Thomson Reuters Eikon supports rebasing analysis. Indexed Price Performance/Rebasing calculates indices and compares all prior and subsequent values for an instrument against one data point (the base value). This value is typically set to 100, as it simplifies percentage change calculations. Use the Rebase Analysis tool to look at the rebase value for the Dell ordinary share. To begin this exercise, open a blank chart app in a Flex Document. Click on the Analysis icon to open the Insert Analysis dialog. Select Indexed Price Performance/Rebasing from the list of options. We’re going to look at Dell ordinary shares. Type Dell in the instrument code box. Then click on the instrument code for Dell Ordinary Shares (DELL.O) in the list of suggested matches. You can also change the parameters. Open the Interval menu and select Quarterly. Click Add; then Close. The chart will then be updated with the new analysis 18 EXPORT CHART DATA TO EXCEL You can export data from a Chart App to Microsoft Excel quickly and easily by using drag and drop. Export chart data into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. To begin this exercise, open a Flex Document containing a chart. In the examples at right, we used a line chart for the Euro: EUR=. You’ll also need to open Microsoft Excel. Then click and hold the series you wish to export, and drag it into the Microsoft Excel window. To complete the export, release the mouse button, and the data will appear. You can export the chart image by rightclicking in the chart. Select Edit, then Copy Image. Switch to your target application and paste the image in. Note that within Quick Charts, toolbar icons enable you to quickly save your chart as an image file, copy an image to the clipboard, or send a snapshot via email. 19
