Select Embroidery Edit and insert card or USB media, which contains design 23 from Brother Memory Card 67. 4. Rotate the design 45 degrees; save to memory. 5. Repeat process and save design 23 rotated to 315 degrees, another at 225 degrees and the final one at 135 degrees. These will be used to form the completed design. Early Irwin Brother Educator Page 1 Border Design Picture Frame Embroidery: 1. Hoop fabric/stabilizer, lining up with the right vertical line (use template to ensure correct placement). Position so the horizontal line will be the top of the template. 2. Bring in the design saved at 45 degrees. Use the arrows to position the design at 0.0 cm width, +4.40 cm length. 3. Bring in the design saved at 135 degrees. Use the arrows to move the design to 0.0 cm width, -4.40 cm length. These settings will make half a frame like the one using the ULT border frame kit. 4. Select the Border key and then the Thread Mark icon. Click the four corners and the left center mark. Stitch the design with green leaves, lilac and deep rose flowers and metallic gold for centers and thread marks. 5. Rehoop using the 7 ¾” vertical line and the top horizontal (use template to ensure correct placement). Bring in design rotated at 315 degrees and position at 0.0 cm width, +4.40 cm length. Bring in design rotated at 225 degrees and move to 0.0 cm width, -4.40 cm length. Select the Border key and then the Thread Mark icon. Click the four corners and the right center mark. In SEWING, use arrows to move the needle to enter the corner point of the left thread mark from the previous stitching. Stitch design as before. See Photo 2 to see how thread marks look on completed diamond (two rectangles). Photo 2 6. Remove the stabilizer. If a washable pen was used to mark the fabric, use a Q-tip to remove the lines before pressing. 7. Use the template to cut the embroidered front to 7 ¼” square. Press on a layer of fusible web. Early Irwin Brother Educator Page 2 Border Design Picture Frame 8. Draw lines on the stiff stabilizer 2 ¼” away from each side as a guide for the center hole placement. Cut the hole in the stiff stabilizer about 2 ½” square. 9. Peal off the fusible web paper backing and press to 7 ¼” square stiff stabilizer (with hole cut). Use backing paper to keep fusible web off your ironing surface. Use press cloth to cover embroidery while bonding to stabilizer. Trim to 7” square. 10. Cut small hole in the center fabric and then clip to fold back on the stiff stabilizer. Press into place. 11. Press fusible web to wrong side of the two pieces of fabric, which will cover the frame back. Remove paper backing and press to other piece of stiff stabilizer. Trim to 7” square. 12. Repeat process for frame easel. Draw a slanted line to shape each long side of easel. The sample is slanted in ½” on each side. Assembly: 1. Set up for sewing with open toe foot (SA147). With Brother polyester lavender thread (804), sew with stitch 1-10 at 4.5 mm width and .3 mm length. Stitch along the long sides of the easel and then lower edge, catching one end of the ribbon in the stitching. 2. Stitch along the lower edge of the embroidered front with the same settings. Trim any stray threads and repeat at 5 mm wide along these areas if your coverage needs filling in. 3. Sew down end of ribbon as you work the 4.5 mm satin stitch to the lower edge of the back. Position the easel to line up placement on back and then attach top of easel with the 4.5 mm satin stitch. (See Photo 3 to see final frame.) 4. Trim any stray threads and repeat at 5 mm wide along these areas if your coverage needs filling in. Early Irwin Brother Educator Page 3 Border Design Picture Frame 5. Use paper clips to line up front and back. 6. Satin stitch at 4.5 mm around the top and sides to complete. 7. Trim any loose edges. 8. Repeat at 5 mm. 9. Use seam sealant to anchor corners. Repeat the process and save design 23 rotated to 315 degrees, save another design at 225 degrees and a final design at 135 degrees. These will be used to form the completed design. Embroidery: 1. Hoop the fabric, lining up with the right vertical line (use template included to ensure correct placement). Position so the horizontal line will be the top of the upper right design (this will allow two designs with one hooping). Bring in the design saved at 45 degrees. Use the arrows to position the centered needle at the intersection of the top horizontal and vertical lines. Stitch the design. 2. Without rehooping, bring in the design saved at 135 degrees to stitch the lower right section. Use the arrows to move the needle to the point of the center thread mark. Stitch design. 3. Rehoop using the 7 ¾” vertical line and the top horizontal (once again use the template to ensure correct placement). Bring in the design rotated at 315 degrees. Use arrows to line the needle up with the top right thread mark in the fabric. Stitch design. 4. Without rehooping, bring in design rotated at 225 degrees. Use center thread mark to position needle. Stitch design. See Photo 2 to see how thread marks look on completed diamond. Photo 5. Remove the stabilizer. If a washable pen was used to mark the fabric, use a Q-tip to remove the lines before pressing. 6. Use the template to cut the embroidered front to 7 ¼” square, making sure the design is centered in the square. Press a layer of fusible web to the wrong side of the fabric. Draw lines on the stiff stabilizer 2 ¼” away from each side as a guide for the center hole placement. Cut a hole in the stiff stabilizer about 2 ½” square. Early Irwin Brother Educator Page 2 Border Hoop Picture Frame 7. Remove the paper from the fusible web. Use a pressing cloth to cover the embroidery, fuse the embroidered linen square to the stiff stabilizer with the hole cut. Trim to 7” square. 8. Cut a small hole in the center of the embroidered fabric and clip the corners of the hole in the stiff stabilizer. Fold back cut edges on to the stiff stabilizer. Fuse edges by pressing into place on the wrong side. 9. Press remaining two pieces of 7 ¼” x 7 ¼” fusible web to wrong side of the two pieces of 7 ¼” x 7 ¼” backing fabric to create the frame back. Remove paper backing from fusible web and press to remaining piece of 7 ¼” x 7 ¼” stiff stabilizer. Trim to 7” square. 10. Repeat fusing process for frame easel, using 3” x 5” fabric. On the wrong side of the fabric, make a mark along only one short side, ½” in from each long edge. Draw a slanted line from the unmarked short side to the marks on the opposite short side to create a tapered easel shape. The finished shape should be 3” at one edge, 2” at the opposite edge and 5” long. Assembly: 1. Set up for sewing with open toe foot (SA147). With Brother polyester lavender thread (804), sew with stitch 1-10 at 4.5 mm width and .3 mm length. Position one end of the 3 ½” ribbon on the right side of one easel piece, midway along the 3” side of fabric. With wrong sides together. Stitch along the long sides of the easel and then lower edge, catching one end of the ribbon in the stitching. 2. Stitch along the lower edge of the embroidered front with the same settings. 3. Position the other end of the ribbon midway along one edge of the frame back. Sew down end of ribbon as you work the 4.5 mm satin stitch to the lower edge of the back. Position the easel to line up placement on back and then attach top of easel with the 4.5 mm satin stitch. (See Photo 3 to see final frame.) Early Irwin Brother Educator Page 3 Photo 3 Border Hoop Picture Frame 4. Trim any stray threads and repeat at 5 mm wide along these areas. 5. Use paper clips to line up the embroidered frame front and frame back. 6. Satin stitch at 4.5 mm around the top and sides to complete. 7. Trim any loose edges. Repeat at 5 mm. 8. Use seam sealant to anchor corners. Early Irwin Brother Educator Page 4
