Chapter 1
Percy Jackson is in middle school. School
is hard for Percy. His class is learning
about the Greek gods. They take a trip to
the museum. Mrs. Dodds is one of Percy’s
teachers. She gets very mad at Percy.
She starts to change. She grows wings
and yellow fangs! Then Mrs. Dodds
attacks Percy.

Percy is scared and confused. His other
teacher, Mr. Brunners, throws him a pen
and it turns into a sword. Percy hits Mrs.
Dodds with the sword and she disappears.
Percy does not know where she went. He
does not know how or why she turned into
a monster. Percy feels confused. He has
never seen anything like that before.

Percy and his friend Grover ride the bus
home after school. Percy still feels
confused about what happened. Grover
tries to make him feel better. Percy and
Grover see three old ladies knitting big
socks near the road. One of the ladies
looks at Percy and cuts her yarn.

Percy does not know what the yarn means.
He feels like something bad is going to
happen to him. Something bad has already
happened today. Today is a confusing day.
Lots of strange things are happening.
Percy goes home, but he still feels very
confused.

Chapter 2
When Percy gets home from school he still
feels confused. Later that night Grover
knocks on Percy’s door. He says they are
in danger. Grover says he will protect
Percy. The old ladies from the bus stop are
looking for Percy. They are the Furies and
they are very dangerous.

The Furies are creatures who help the God
of the Underworld. Mrs. Dodds is one of
The Furies. She is trying to get Percy.
Grover says he will protect Percy and help
him stay safe. All at once, Grover changes!
He had hooves instead of feet. He is a
satyr. A satyr is a man on the top and a
goat on the bottom.

Grover wants to help Percy stay safe.
Percy wants his mom to be safe too.
Grover, Percy, and his mom will go to a
safe place. Grover knows where to go!
They will all drive to a special camp. Percy
and his mom will be safe there. They need
to leave now. They have to get to the
camp as fast as they can.

Grover, Percy, and his mom are driving to
the camp. Out of nowhere a Minotaur
attacks them. It grabs Percy’s mom. She
disappears. Percy and Grover try to fight
back. Percy jumps on the Minotaur’s
head. Percy pulls out the Minotaur’s horn
and it dies. Percy’s mom is gone and he is
hurt. Grover gets Percy to the camp.

Chapter 3
Percy wakes up at the camp. He is
surprised to see his favorite teacher there.
Mr. Chiron is a centaur. A centaur is half
man, half horse. Mr. Chiron explains to
Percy that Greek gods live forever. They
are very powerful.

The camp where Grover took Percy is
very special. It is for children of the gods.
Percy finds out his dad is a god. He does
not know which god. Percy needs to learn
to fight to protect himself. Percy finds out
water makes him strong. It helps him win
a sword fight. The water also helps his
cuts heal. Water gives Percy power.

Grover thinks Percy might be the son of a
powerful god. The most powerful gods are
Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. They are all
brothers. A picture of a trident appears
above Percy’s head. This means Percy’s
dad is Poseidon, God of the Sea. That is
why Percy gets power from water.

At the camp, Percy makes new friends.
Annabeth is a good fighter. She is tough
and she is very pretty. She does not like
Percy at first. After Percy learns to fight
better, Annabeth starts to like him more.
She is the daughter of a god.

Chapter 4
Zeus is very upset. He is missing his
lightning bolt. Someone stole it! He thinks
Percy stole it for his father. Zeus wants
Percy to give it back. If Percy does not
give it back, Zeus will be very mad. Zeus
will fight Poseidon to get it back. Percy
does not want that to happen.

Everyone thinks Percy has the lightning
bolt. Percy’s teacher, Mr. Chiron, tells
Percy that Hades has the lightning bolt.
Hades is the God of the Underworld. He is
powerful and scary. He is the brother of
Zeus and Poseidon. Percy and his friends
do not want the gods to fight. They will go
to look for Hades and make things right.

Percy’s friends want to help Percy to make
things right. Luke is the son of Hades. He
knows how to help Percy. He knows how
to get to the Underworld. He has some
things that will help Percy. He gives Percy
a shield. He gives Percy some winged
shoes. He gives Percy a map. These
things will help. Percy is very thankful.

Grover and Annabeth want to help Percy
too. They want to help him make things
right. Percy has to go to Hades to find the
lightning bolt and return it to Zeus. Grover
and Annabeth will go with Percy to Hades.
They will help him to get there and stay
safe. They will help him find the lightning
bolt and make things right.

Chapter 5
The map Luke gave Percy says the
entrance to the Underworld is in
California. Percy, Grover, and Annabeth
will take a bus to California. The Furies
are on the bus. They want to stop Percy.
Percy fights the Furies. The bus crashes.
Percy, Grover, and Annabeth run away
from the Furies.

Percy, Grover, and Annabeth are safe from
The Furies for now. They are getting very
hungry. They find a restaurant. It seems
like no one is there. Things are dusty and
there are a lot of statues in the restaurant.
Percy, Grover, and Annabeth decide to
look around.

Percy, Grover, and Annabeth are looking
around the restaurant. Percy sees an old
woman with a veil on her head. The old
woman takes off her veil. It is Medusa! She
is a dangerous monster with snakes for
hair. Her eyes are cloudy. If you look into
her eyes you will turn into a stone statue.
This place is a trap.

Percy tells his friends not to look into
Medusa’s eyes or they will turn to stone.
Percy tries to keep his eyes closed. He
cannot see Medusa with his eyes closed.
He tries to look at Medusa in a reflection.
He can fight her this way. Percy sneaks up
on Medusa and cuts off her head. Percy
and his friends are safe.

Chapter 6
Percy and his friends are back on their way
to California. They decide to ride the train.
They buy tickets for the train and climb
aboard. The train stops in St. Louis. Percy,
Grover, and Annabeth want to see the top
of the Gateway Arch. Percy gets stuck in
the arch with a woman and her dog. It is
another trap.

The dog turns into a chimera and attacks!
The chimera breaths fire onto Percy. Percy
uses his shield to protect himself. Percy
fights very hard. He cuts off all the heads
of the chimera. Suddenly they grow back!
The chimera is mad now. It blows fire at
Percy. The fire makes a big hole in the
arch. Percy jumps out of the hole.

Percy cannot find Grover and Annabeth.
He looks for them and finally finds them.
They tell Percy the police are looking for
him. They blamed Percy for the hole in the
arch. Percy and his friends hurry to the
train station to get away from the police.
They are on the way to California again.

Percy, Grover, and Annabeth have been
becoming good friends. They have been
fighting together and getting along. Percy
is glad he has friends. Everyone thinks
Percy has taken the lightning bolt. They
have to get to California and find it. Percy,
Grover, and Annabeth have a lot of work to
do to make things right.

Chapter 7
Percy and his friends are feeling tired.
They have been traveling a lot. Their train
stops in Denver, Colorado. While they are
stopped, they meet Ares, the God of War.
Ares asks Percy to find his shield. The
shield is very important to Ares. He left it in
a waterpark. Ares will help Percy get to
California if he can help him get his shield.

Percy, Grover, and Annabeth go to the
waterpark. They find the shield. When
Percy and Annabeth grab the shield a net
falls on them. It is a trap. Grover comes to
their rescue and helps them get free. They
give Ares his shield. Ares gives them a
truck. They drive it all the way to Las
Vegas but then the truck stops working.

Percy, Grover, and Annabeth are getting
very tired. They decide to stay in a hotel.
They have been travelling a lot. When they
get in the hotel everyone is having a good
time. People are friendly and they want to
hang out with Percy, Grover, and
Annabeth. They give them free lotus
flowers to eat. They are all so nice.

Percy, Grover, and Annabeth eat lotus
flowers, drink sodas, and play games.
They are having fun. Percy gets a funny
feeling. Something is wrong. Percy
realizes they have been playing games for
five days! Percy remembers he has to find
the lightning bolt. They have to get out of
there. The hotel is another trap.

Chapter 8
Percy, Grover, and Annabeth leave the
hotel. They do not have much time. They
were in the hotel too long. They take a taxi
to California. They need to go to the
Underworld and make things right. If they
find the lightning bolt they can make things
right. Poseidon sends Percy magic pearls
that will help him if he gets in trouble.

Percy, Grover, and Annabeth finally find
the Underworld. A big dog is guarding the
entrance. The big dog will not let them in.
Percy, Grover, and Annabeth have to
decide what to do. They give the dog a
golden coin. The dog lets them enter.
Percy and his friends have finally found
Hades.

Percy wants to make things right. He does
not want the gods to fight. Percy tells
Hades he wants Zeus’ bolt back. Hades
says he does not have it. Hades thought
Percy had it. Hades thinks Percy is lying.
Percy’s backpack feels heavy and Hades
sees something. Zeus’ bolt is inside! Percy
had the lightning bolt all this time.

Percy had been tricked. He had the
lightning bolt the whole time. Now he has
brought the bolt to Hades. Hades wants
the lightning bolt. Percy wants to bring the
lightning bolt to Zeus on Mount Olympus.
He has to get out of here. He uses the
pearls Poseidon gave him to get out of the
Underworld.

Chapter 9
Ares meets Percy, Grover, and Annabeth
on the beach. Ares was the one that took
Zeus’ bolt and Hades’ helm. He wants the
gods to fight. Ares is mad that Percy
messed up his plan. Percy does not want
the gods to fight. Percy fights Ares for them.
Percy wants to make things right.

It is hard for Percy to fight Ares. Ares is
very strong. Percy tries to remember all
the things he learned at camp. He uses
water when he fights. Percy wins the
fight against Ares. He has stopped the
gods from fighting. Percy gives the
Furies the helm of darkness. It belongs to
Hades. The Furies will give it to him.

Percy takes the lightning bolt. He brings it
to Mount Olympus. He returns the
lightning bolt to Zeus. Zeus is thankful that
Percy has found the bolt and brought it
back to him. Percy talks to his father,
Poseidon, for the first time. Poseidon is
proud of Percy. He tells Percy he loves
him. Percy is glad to meet his father.

Percy is happy. He met his father. His
mother is safe. The gods will not fight. But
Percy is still confused. Who stole the
lightning bolt? Percy goes back to the
camp. Percy finds out Luke stole the
lightning bolt from Zeus and gave it to
Ares. Luke is the lightning thief!
