www.culturefaith.com [email protected] Everyone has a worldview, but we do not all share the same worldview. A worldview simply is the intellectual and emotional filter through which we experience, interpret, and respond to the world. Our worldview begins developing before we are two years old and is almost fully formed before we reach our teenage years. That worldview helps us to identify who we want to be, how we want to live, and what we consider to be right and good. We feel good about ourselves when we live in concert with that worldview; we feel uncomfortable when we make choices or engage in behaviors that conflict with our worldview. The following questions were part of a longer survey conducted by the American Culture and Faith Institute in February 2017 to ascertain what percentage of US adults has a biblical worldview. While there are many different types of worldviews, a biblical worldview sees life through a biblical lens, using scriptural principles and perspectives as the basis for our decisionmaking and behavior. The survey incorporated 20 questions about our beliefs and 20 questions about our behavior. Because a worldview is a combination of what we believe and then implementing those beliefs into a biblical lifestyle, we included both types of questions in this inventory. The goal is to become an Integrated Disciple – someone who has blended their beliefs and behavior into a life that is reflective of the life of Jesus Christ. A person is considered to be an Integrated Disciple – that is, to have a biblical worldview – if they answer at least 80% of those questions (32 or more of the 40) in ways that reflect the Bible’s teaching. Keep in mind that this survey is an estimate, not a foolproof gage of someone’s spirituality. Certainly there are more than 40 questions that could be used to measure one’s worldview. Further, choosing 80% as the cutoff is a reasonable but debatable parameter. And we realize that only God knows who truly has a biblical worldview – and that the very concept of a “biblical worldview” is not specifically mentioned or described in the Bible! This is a simple and incomplete tool designed to help us approximate how many people in American society today are thinking and acting biblically. Here are the 40 questions we used, excluding the other 34 questions that were part of the original survey. (For example, in what is listed below as question 3, there were four other life outcomes that were included in that question on the survey but they have been removed from this text because they do not factor into the worldview score.) Other methodological practices we use in our surveys – such as rotating the sequence of responses, so that we minimize order bias in peoples’ answers – are also absent from this listing of the questions. After the final question we have provided the answer to each question that qualified as a “biblically correct” response. If you wish to personally take this survey feel free to add up how many answers you gave that qualified as the biblical response, to see if you met the minimum threshold of 32 correct replies. If so, it is likely you have a biblical worldview and lifestyle. If not, you may be able to detect some patterns or challenges that will enable you to develop a biblical worldview and lifestyle.
