2016 Asian Pacific Mathematical Olympiad
The Australian Mathematical Olympiad Committee has recently notified me that as a result of
outstanding performances in recent mathematics contests, Charles Li (Year 10), Jeff Li and Oliver Papillo
(both Year 9) have been selected as three of twenty-eight students to represent Australia in the 2016 Asian
Pacific Mathematical Olympiad at Macquarie University in Sydney this April. This is a wonderful achievement
and we congratulate and wish the boys all the best in this challenging contest.

Year 7 Camp
Good luck to our Year 7 students as they embark on their camping adventure next week. Conditions at
Somers look promising and I am sure that the boys will thoroughly enjoy the range of activities on offer.
The week is strategically placed in the term to allow the boys to have a break from homework and other
school routines and to re-charge their batteries for the final few weeks of the term. A prime focus of the camp
is teamwork and building a strong community. We will aim to return to school by 3.20pm next Friday, with
updates to be posted on twitter throughout the afternoon: @CGSCamps.
Curriculum Information Evening
It was great to see so many parents on Wednesday night for the Curriculum Information evening. Our
aim was to cover a range of curriculum related topics and to articulate the values that underpin what we
aim to achieve in the classroom and beyond. My thanks to Mr Scott Wyatt for running the evening, and to
Mr Mark Dowley, Mr Colin Stein, Mr Ben Bishop and Ms Linda Wostry for their input. If you were not able to
attend on Wednesday, you can access the presentation through the Parent Portal.

It was a pleasure to welcome Mr Hugh Van Cuylenburg from The Resilience Project to Middle School on
Friday morning. Mr Van Cuylenburg’s dynamic presentation to the students focused on the importance of
building resilience and he shared some practical and effective strategies that can help with this. He also
spoke about his time in India, where he worked in impoverished communities, and the lessons that he
learnt from this amazing experience. I am sure that the boys gained a great deal from the morning and they
were certainly left with a great deal to consider. It is wonderful that Mr Van Cuylenburgwill also be our guest
speaker at this year’s William Angliss Dinner on Tuesday 10 May. The focus for the evening will be on how
parents can help to foster resilience in their children and Hugh will share a range of practical tips. The dinner
is open to all Middle School parents and always proves to be a great occasion. Invitations to the evening will
be sent to families next term.

Tuesday 8 March
This year our class, individual and family photographs will be taken by Hikari Photography. You will, as usual,
receive a standard pack without charge; this comprises a class, individual and, if appropriate, family photo.
You will also have the option of going online before these are delivered to choose extra photos if desired.
Extra photos will be at a cost but delivery will be free with your standard pack. The final day to order extra
photos for delivery to school is Friday 8 April, the last Friday of the term holidays. After that the extra photos
can still be obtained online but will incur postage costs and will come directly to your postal address.
The photographs will be taken on Tuesday 8 March. Your son will come home with a name card, and on the
back of that is all the information you require to go online to look at photos and order. The standard pack
photographs cannot be changed.
Boys will need to wear Summer Uniform, with shirts as the outer garment. Please ensure your son
is neat and tidy on the day with shoes polished, jewellery and hair as specified on page 26 of the
‘Information for Parents - 2016’ booklet.
As Year 7 boys are at camp on Tuesday 8 March family photographs for these boys will be on
Tuesday 15 March.

Sport
Good luck to all teams in their final round of Summer Sport for 2016. A special mention to the Firsts’
Badminton and Table Tennis Teams who are playing off for their respective AGSV trophies on Saturday as
well as the Division 3 and 4 Squash Teams. Well done to the Triathlon Squad who finished in second place
this season after a close contest against St Bedes.
Winter trials and training is well underway so please check the relevant noticeboards or email
[email protected] for further information.
Sport Report
The First Cricket Team played for the Ray Carroll Cup at Assumption last weekend. At 6-52 Camberwell
looked to be in trouble, but a scintillating 62 from Rohan Chitale (Year 11), a composed 24 from
Tom Cutter (Year 11) and an invaluable 12 from Ray Son (Year 9) saw Camberwell recover to be all out
for 169. Assumption was one for none in the first over after Harrison Lucas (Year 12) hit the stumps for
a direct hit run out. From there the fast bowling and accurate deliveries from Michael Liu (Year 12) and
Harrison Lucas saw both finish with three wickets. Lachie Powell (Year 12) also deserves a special mention
with a superb spell of 8 overs, 3 for 16. The final result was a 105 run victory to Camberwell, bringing home
the Ray Carroll Cup.
The First Tennis Team’s last match of the season was a Friday road trip to Assumption College. The first few
games of doubles demonstrated Camberwell’s superior net play and heavy hitting from the baseline. A 3-1
start in the doubles became a strong 6-2 lead to Camberwell after the reverse doubles, Benjamin Yep and
Projit Banerjee (both Year 11), dominating the number one doubles position. Camberwell eventually won
11 sets (112 games) to Assumption 5 sets (80 games).
Following last week’s nail biting finish against Mentone, the First Basketball Team were intent on finishing
their season on a high against Assumption. An early morning road trip saw the boys secure a comfortable
victory, with Aidan Stitz and Jack Perry performing well.
The Second Basketball Team also had an emphatic win against Assumption, Riley Verbi and
Rowan Solomon (both Year 12) leading the team in both attack and defence. Camberwell finished the game
clear winners with 54 to 18.
Friday saw the Swimming Squad head out to PEGS for the annual Duel in the Pool. Some fast times from
Connor Xu, Jamie Forwood (both Year 10) and Lewis Clarke (Year 6) helped the team edge ahead on the
points table, but the last couple of races saw PEGS come back, eventually defeating Camberwell by one
race.
On Sunday, the Triathlon Team headed to Sandringham for the last race of the season. Once again tough
conditions were the biggest challenge for most boys, but the likes of Lachlan Waycott (Year 8), Peter Thorn,
Nicholas Liew (both Year 10) and Alastair Haslam (Year 11) pushed through the conditions to race well. A
special mention and congratulations go to Peter Thorn who finished second in his age group, giving him
Silver in the Victorian State Championship; a fantastic effort. Overall Camberwell finished the season in
second place in the Boys’ School Competition behind St Bedes, making it the tenth year in a row where the
school has placed first or second in the competition. A great achievement.

CGS Auxiliary - Call for Volunteers
The Auxiliary is one of the Parents’ Association’s support groups. The Auxiliary’s main role is to provide
hospitality and assistance on school occasions and to foster a spirit of community among the parents of the
school, thereby encouraging participation and communication.
The activities of the Auxiliary include the preparation and sale of Christmas puddings, running of the cake
stall on Open Day, coordinating the cafeteria roster and School Memorabilia. The Auxiliary also provides
assistance at the Welcome Morning Teas, Parent/Teacher Meetings, Grandparents’ Day, Year 12 Valedictory
Dinner and other school functions as required.
Please contact Nicole Loidl on [email protected] or the CGS Development Office on
[email protected] for further information.
CGS Cafeteria Roster
The CGS Cafeteria is managed by Alliance Catering and two parent volunteers assist each day from
9.30am to 1.00pm. Volunteers are asked to perform various tasks as required on the day. Those tasks
may include packaging, wrapping and preparation of food such as sandwiches, rolls and fruit salad;
serving the boys at both recess and lunch breaks; and occasionally washing dishes if necessary.
Volunteers take a lunch break when morning recess has finished and may choose a meal from the daily
selection, free of charge. It is usual for parents to offer to assist twice a term on the same nominated day.
Offers to help fill short term vacancies or simply once per term can also be accommodated. Arrangements
can sometimes be made should you wish to be placed on the roster with a friend.
The CGS Auxiliary oversees the smooth operation of the Cafeteria Volunteer Roster. For information contact
the Cafeteria Roster Coordinator, Mrs Nicole Loidl on [email protected] or 0401 697 264, or the CGS
Development Office on [email protected] or 9835 1742.
