COMMISSIONAIRES AND THE
EDMONTON POLICE SERVICE –
A PARTNERSHIP
The Canadian Corps of Commissionaires,
Northern Alberta Division provides a
variety of direct support to the Edmonton Police Service. In addition to general
security and the seized vehicle lot we
also provide peace officers to the arrest
processing units and operators for the
photo radar unit. Commissionaires have
provided security services to Edmonton
for over 70 years and our support to the
law enforcement community is a great
source of pride. That pride is demonstrated by our continuing support
to the Edmonton Police Foundation
where we are an annual major sponsor
of the Gala Dinner. Not only do we help
out the Foundation, but we also use the
event to thank our commissionaires who
work with EPS by inviting them to the
event. This past year was extra special in
that Commissionaires were drawn from
amongst the major sponsors to receive
a Fly-Along with the Air One Helicopter.
The privilege was given to Commissionaire Jim Turkington for his efforts during
the WCB hostage taking incident last
fall. Jim was responsible for the successful liaison with EPS and subsequent
evacuation of an office tower adjacent
to the WCB building. His account of the
fly-along is as follows:
www.edmontonpolicefoundation.com
“On December 9, 2009 I had the privilege
of participating in a fly-along with EPS
Air One Helicopter. Prior to the flight
scheduled for 23:30 hours I met with police officers Vern and Jim and watched a
safety and emergency procedures video.
The flight which lasted two hours was an
amazing experience and the view of the
City of Edmonton was spectacular; the
evening was very enjoyable and will be
a memorable experience for me. I would
like to thank the Commissionaires for giving me this opportunity and EPS for their
hospitality.”

From Craig Hamilton, Student Awards
Supervisor, Student Resource Centre, MacEwan University
“I am pleased to report that the EPF
Awards were recently awarded with a
value of $1000 each to (5 recipients).
Your generosity has an immediate and
direct impact on the lives and success
of our students. As an Advisor with
MacEwan’s Student Resource Centre I
witness, first hand, the challenges and
struggles that hundreds of students face.
I also witness their excitement, relief,
and satisfaction when they discover they
have been selected as a recipient of a
scholarship or bursary. The kind of assistance and acknowledgement of a job
well done that you are providing through
this award has a lasting influence on our
students; the leaders of the next generation.”
Did you know: these awards are
funded from profits of our Annual
Gala Dinner.
POLICE FOUNDATION MEMBERS
From an Award Recipient
“Thank you so incredibly much for
selecting me to be a recipient of the EPF
Award. This scholarship has helped me
significantly in covering the expensive
costs of tuition for my Police and Security
16 Month Intensive Program”.
From An Award Recipient
“I would like to thank the individuals who
selected me as a successful recipient of
the EPF Award. This honour to be selected will greatly benefit me for future and
present reasons. When I apply for the
EPS, the honour of being selected for the
EPF Award will be proudly mentioned
and written in my resume. Like many
other students who are paying for their
education an award is greatly appreciated and needed. During the term of my
first year in the program, I was working
two jobs and attending school full time.
The privilege of receiving this Award, will
bring financial relief”.
During a strategic planning session held
last fall it was recommended that the
Edmonton Police Foundation develop
a member engagement strategy to
connect to the current membership and
refresh their commitment to the Edmonton Police Foundation. The 10th Anniversary of the Edmonton Police Foundation presents itself as an opportunity
to re-engage foundation members as
ambassadors for the community. Please
watch the mail for your invitation to a
one-hour presentation on the proposed
new membership structure.
PROJECTS FUNDED TO DATE
Seven Projects have been funded to date in 2010
Cops For Cancer Ironman Challenge 2010
Cops for Cancer was born in 1994 when Retired Sergeant Goulet of the EPS shaved his head to show support for a young cancer
victim. This initiative has since raised over 20 million dollars for the Canadian Cancer Society.
Members of the EPS began competing in Ironman Canada as a means of raising funds for the Canadian Cancer Society. Ironman
Canada is a triathlon where each competitor must complete a 3.8 km open water swim, a 180 km bike ride and a 42 km marathon
within an allotted time of 17 hours.
The team has now expanded across Canada. The Edmonton team consists of 85 members, 14 of whom are EPS members. The
2010 Ironman Challenge will be the Edmonton team’s 10th anniversary and they have committed to raising $700,000.
Utilizing a very unique strategy of fundraising, the Edmonton team works closely with students in our community to raise money
for the Canadian Cancer Society.
Funding was given to Team Edmonton 2010 for the purchase of team uniforms.

Da Bom Squad 2010
Repelling, “House of Pain” fitness testing, mock first-aid scenarios, and a five-day challenge camp are just some of the activities
youth engage in during the 14-week program.
Many Da Bom kids have made positive life changes since starting the program—making better decisions for themselves and
participating in community service projects. Most graduates of the program maintain close relationships with youth workers for
a full year following program completion.
The efforts of many individuals, organizations and businesses have helped make Da Bom Squad a great success. The Edmonton
Police Foundation is one of these program supporters and continues to generously provide much needed program funding.
Da Bom Squad is a youth program aimed at keeping kids out of the criminal justice system. Focusing on physical fitness and life
skills, the program has been operating with the help of many diverse partners since it’s beginning in 2008.
My Nation on a Mission
BACKGROUND
Please note the following letter, addressed to Chief BOYD, which will provide background information to this submission:
Chief Mike Boyd,
My Mane is Mebreate Deres, originally I
am from Ethiopia resident of Edmonton
since 1991. I was refereed by Deputy chief
Darryl Da Costa, to attend the Citizen
police Academy class #14, I would like
to thank our Deputy chief, I served my
community for the last 15 years as I go
deeper I became more interested to be
involved much more. During my class
I did approach EPS member Detective
James Clover, I told him I want to help
young school age children, and I asked if
he would help me. James Said yes he will.
Since that day James and I including my
daughter are working together. We have
prepared a project called MY NATION ON
MISION for Ages 7-17. In this project he
encourages and supported me. On March
14th we invited parents and children at
the North division in the community room
.He presented himself as a police officer,
a parent as well as an ordinary person he
created a welcoming environment and
relationship between citizen and police.
The group greatly appreciates his efforts
to address our concerns. I also would like to
thank the North Division for welcoming us
into the community room for our meeting.
Sincerely,
Mebreate Deers
‘My Nation on Mission’, is a grassroots
community initiative focused on children
and youth primarily from African families.
It is the ultimate desire that the African
Centre provides assistance with this
initiative, and provides further resources
to ensure sustainability in Ms. DEERS’s
ambitions.
A secondary benefit to the child and
youth programming is to afford the
participating African mothers an opportunity to enrich their own lives by partaking in programming relating to physical
and mental wellness, domestic violence,
community support groups and events/
venues within in the City of Edmonton.
www.edmontonpolicefoundation.com
Funding was provided is to assist ‘My Nation on Mission’ in the creation of a youth
soccer program. With the valuable contribution by parents to initiate this program, in both supervision and coaching,
these soccer camps will provide a staple
in programming available via ‘My Nation
on Mission’. The program is in need
of supplies to both attract and retain
participants. I am requesting financial assistance for the following materials:
These supplies will provide credibility
and a foundation to operate several soccer camps. These camps will be conducted through-out the year and ‘My
Nation on Mission’ will work closely, via
the writer, with other charitable groups
such as ‘Sports-Central’ and ‘KidSport Edmonton’ to ensure that all children have
a reasonable access to sports programming and the supplies required.

they can benefit from safe and secure
environments. As a strong immigrant
woman I go through life with difficulties, but with hopes and dreams that
my difficulties become life lessons.”
My Nation on a Mission
As a follow-up, please accept my sincere
gratitude for the financial assistance
that the Foundation provided to ‘Our
Nation on Mission’. The funds provided
purchased enough soccer equipment
supplies to assist the development of a
small soccer program. This equipment
included five [5] sets of sport pinnys, as
shown below, that will allow the program
to operate numerous sporting events.
‘Our Nation on Mission’, formerly referenced as My Nation on Mission, is the
product of Ms. Mebreate DERES and her
daughter Drsane. The writer felt it important to share some details to Ms. DERES:
• Mebreate was born on June 18th,
1967, 75 miles from Addis Ababa in
the province of Merhabete.
• Her father was a government spokesperson for that province. She learned
a special language from her parents
that is now only spoken in church.
• Mebreate came to Canada on September 11th, 1991, with her husband.
She describes her life in Edmonton as
being a challenging journey; however
their hope and dreams had led her
into the “next level of everyday life”.
Working long hours for the last 20
years and becoming the mother of 4,
as well as 3 adopted children from her
homeland.
• “Without fully understanding settlement and adjustments about life in
Canada, it is a motive for me to go
from survival mode to a success story.
My life always seems to have a new
journey to start. Today I am able to
share my endless count of life stories
that flows into a river of the heart
that is directed to social and personal
engagement.”
• In Edmonton for the last 15 years, Mebreate helped to establish an Ethiopian Orthodox church. She continues to
be heavily involved in the community,
including volunteer work for the Lois
Hole Hospital for Women, the African
Centre, and a board member for the
Edmonton Décor North, as well as numerous activities within the Ethiopian
community.
• “My mission will continue to serve and
to celebrate a numbers of successes.
Maintaining the young life into the
families value and social circles and
The writer will continue to update the
Edmonton Police Foundation to the efforts of Ms. DERES and the “Our Nation
on Mission’ program.
by celebrating mothers day it was our most
successful event. Our mission is focussed on
serving and celebrating the success.
I would especially like to thank James Clover
for his commitment and his dedication
supporting these communities. I am also
interested in having their close support
especially towards the youth, by establishing
relationships.
Recently the program hosted a Mothers’
Day celebration at the African Centre,
which brought together families from
a variety of cultural backgrounds. Ms.
DERES, as well as the writer, remain
strongly committed to supporting the
women and children of African families.
The investments in their lives contribute
significant dividends to the communityat-large.
My daughter and I are personally very encouraged by what EPS is doing in supporting
Our Nation on Mission; with your help we will
do more in supporting new families.
The writer is proud of the singular work
that Ms. DERES has accomplished in
a short time, starting as a grass-roots
advocate to now becoming a respected
community leader within the City of
Edmonton. The writer is equally appreciative to the financial contributions that
the Edmonton Police Foundation has
bestowed onto Ms. DERES’ ambitions of
“Our Nation on Mission’.
This video was completed and forwarded
to school resource officers across Alberta.
This is a tool for investigators to assist
them in teaching “tweens” about online
safety and discouraging them from sharing
too much information online. This initiative was clearly a proactive approach to
prevent crimes such as child exploitation
and child pornography.
The following letters was received from
Ms. Deres:
OTHER FUNDED PROJECTS
TO DATE
My name is Mebreate Deres my family and
I we are residents of Edmonton since 1991.
I have served my community for the last 15
years for many reason and in many ways I
am interested in being more involved.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the Edmonton Police
Foundation for supporting “Our Nation
On Mission” which is a concept developed
to support the African Canadian 7-17 age
group children and youth who are settling
their life in Edmonton and the surrounding
area. The New youth activities program
started on march 27 2010. My daughter
and I may have knocked on the right door
but Detective James clover from EPS he
has opened the opportunities for many
children that can give hope and dreams
through a young life time. The positive
spirit that he has established in our circle
is much appreciated and respected. Our
program recently received soccer equipment from the Edmonton Police Foundation. Also we honoured children’s mothers
