Art All Around: Art Making
Communities
In the spring of 2016, Maine Center for Creativity
relaunched its signature and internationally
renowned Art All Around project as a statewide
program to engage Maine communities in largescale, collaborative art making in the streets. The
re-imagined Art All Around took off in Westbrook in a
months-long process that connected and empowered
diverse members of the community, celebrated
local identity, and helped spark economic activity,
culminating in the transformation of a downtown park
into a fantasy world comprised of thousands of locally
conceived and hand-crafted art pieces. On January
6th, Maine Center for Creativity, in collaboration with
Kingspoke and the Westbrook organizations and artmakers that made it possible, is bringing artifacts of
the 2016 installation to Portland for one month, and
will announce the 2017 Art All Around communities.
Learn about the Art All Around initiative, how to get
involved, and Maine Center for Creativity’s ongoing
vision to engage and empower Maine’s whole
communities in creating a culture of creativity and
innovation, and work together for more vital, vibrant
and visible cities and towns across the state.

RN Cohen and Stan Lieberman
A First Friday Dance Party
Robert Cohen, Portland native, opened his first
gallery in 1988. After twenty years in Portland’s Old
Port, Cohen moved to the State Theater Building. An
emerging artist, Stan Lieberman, enjoys capturing
the places and scenery around him onto his canvas.
Both artists and their work can be found at the
Congress Square Gallery and in their studio in the
State Street Theater Building, Suite 303.
Leave your footprint on OLS’s dance floor before
the venue redoes their flooring this January. Join
Maine Marimba Ensemble as they bring their uplifting
sounds inside for this special indoor winter First Friday
performance and dance party in Portland’s most warm
and inviting music venue. Maine Marimba is a unique
percussion band based in Portland, Maine. They play
marimbas, huge wooden xylophone-like instruments.
These are hand-made by Jacob, and are created from
a variety of woods. The music we play is based on
traditional Zimbabwean music from the Shona culture.
It incorporates great rhythms, and inspires foottapping, hip-swaying and dancing. Tickets just $10 at
the door and the party kicks off at 7pm!

In 2016, our photographers covered
politics, from the heated presidential
campaigns to the emotional election
night gatherings. They traveled the
state, photographing lobstermen
in Stonington and residents of the
remote town of Allagash. They
spent time with people like Arianna,
a 5-year-old girl who was living in
the woods until her family found
an apartment. And they captured
everyday moments, from a game
of pickup basketball to a bird’s-eye
view of a crane operator high above
Portland. They made thousands of
frames and drove thousands of miles
to tell Maine’s stories.
