Version 15 – January 2016
The Ulysses Club
Originated in Australia in 1983, a number of New
Zealanders at first joined through Australia.
As the New Zealand numbers grew a branch was
formed here to look after the Club.
When numbers reached around four hundred, The
Ulysses Club of New Zealand Incorporated was
formed with a National Committee. As of April
2015 active membership is about two thousand,
seven hundred and twenty nine branches have
been established to arrange regional activities.
A number of members have been recognised for
dedicated service to the Club with Life Membership
and to their branch with the Odyssey Medal.
Why Ulysses?
The name originates from a poem of the same title
by Lord Alfred Tennyson. It tells how the great
Greek hero Ulysses, now middle aged and securely
in charge of his kingdom of Ithaca, become bored,
and longs to go adventuring with his shipmates of
old. It describes will the type of person who still
has enough spark to continue riding into middle
even later years. The poem is much too long to
quote in full here, but you can find it in libraries,
online, and in the Albatross Book of Verse.
Regalia (Gear)
A wide range of regalia with our registered logo is
available for purchase from the Club website
(www.ulysses.org.nz) or through your Branch
Quartermaster. There are badges, braces &
buckles, all manner of clothing and other
interesting items. A book celebrating the Club’s
first 25 years titled “Growing Old Disgracefully” is
available for purchase as well.
What are the Club’s aims?
 To provide ways in which older
motorcyclists can get together for
companionship and mutual support.
 To show by example that motorcycling can
be enjoyable and a practical activity for
riders and pillions of all ages.
 To draw the attention of public and private
institutions to the needs and views of older
riders.
Apart from riding, what else happens?
We publish a national magazine, the Ulyssian,
which contains information about forthcoming
events, provides a forum for members’ news and
views, and topics of interest to bikers. We also
maintain a website which provides open and
immediate communication between members.
Branches throughout New Zealand arrange
meetings, rallies, outings and social events. The
Annual general Meeting & National Rally of The
Ulysses Club of New Zealand Inc. is held before the
end of April at a different location each year,
alternating between the North Island and the South
Island. This is a major event on the calendar, being
an occasion for members to socialise, play and ride
together.
