4 Ways to Help
the Plant Sale
and the Nature Center
Volunteer at the Nature Center Plant Sale
The incredible power of teamwork is seen every spring as Nature Center
volunteers support the yearly Plant Sale. The Plant Sale, a long-standing volunteer
tradition, has a task for anyone who is willing to give of their time.
On May 7, we create all of our Plant Sale catalog orders for delivery. Volunteers
can assist with set-up, assembling orders, auditing orders (extensive plant
knowledge necessary) or assisting the auditors. On May 10, we open the Plant Sale to the public. The Nature Center parking lot
becomes a plant showroom for customers. Volunteers can assist with set-up, checkout, the children's craft or with the curb-side valet.
For more information or to volunteer, contact the Volunteer Coordinator via
phone or email at [email protected] or (216) 321-5935, x 237.
Donate Plants for our Fabulous Homegrown Sale
We want your plants to sell at the Homegrown Sale. Perennials of all varieties are
welcome. Hostas, ferns, natives and non-invasive ground covers are in demand!
How to Donate Plants:
• Dig up and pot your plants in advance.
• Drop off plants in pots at the Friends Pavilion at the Nature Center on May 4,
5 or 6 during regular hours. Please deliver plants well-watered and ready for sale!
• Label each plant with botanical or common name on index card placed in a plastic
baggy. If known, please also add height, bloom season and color.
• Sign the donors list posted in the Friends Pavilion or inside at the Welcome Desk.
How to Donate Time for the Homegrown Sale
• Volunteer for a few hours during the week of May 5 to prepare plants for the
Homegrown Plant Sale. Contact the Volunteer Coordinator at (216) 321-5935,
ext. 237 or [email protected].

Help Our Woodland Garden!
The Nature Center is planning to update the Rusty Knight Wildflower Garden
located southeast of the Nature Center building. The Shaker Lakes Garden
Club installed this garden in the early 1970s in honor of one of their esteemed
members and ardent Nature Center supporter, Rusty Knight. After 40 years, the
garden has naturally shifted from being an open wildflower garden to a woodland
space. A few invasive species have crept in, as well. Currently, the garden
primarily features spring woodland flowers. The new plan includes flowering
plants for every season.
The renovated Rusty Knight Woodland Garden will feature plants that thrive
in the shaded understory of our mature forest. New plants will be installed, and
the hillside and trails will be improved to reduce erosion. This garden will be an
example of what a woodland garden can look like and will highlight native plants
that will thrive in a typical northeast Ohio shade garden.
A donation of $5 will help purchase two individual flower plugs; $15 will cover
the cost of a small shrub. An anonymous donor has generously offered to
match Plant Sale donations for the Rusty Knight Woodland Garden, so your
donation will go even further! Thank you for your support.

Glossary of Terms
for the Perennials, Natives, Shrubs, Vines, Ferns and
Grass-like Plants listed in this catalog
The following plant lists are broken down by preferred light conditions.
Some plants are adaptable to more or less light, with more or less regular
watering. Here is a key to the meanings of the terms used in the descriptions:
Native, as used in this catalog, means a plant that occurs naturally in Ohio.
A cultivar can be bred from it.
Groundcover means a spreading plant that can be used to create an
unbroken swathe that stifles weeds once established.
Ferns are flowerless, seedless plants that reproduce by means of spores.
Many, not all, are evergreen.
Perennials are non-woody plants that do not die at the end of their
growing season, but go dormant and return in future years.
Shrubs, like trees, have a woody structure that does not die back in winter.
Vines included in this list are all perennial, and all have woody structures.
Grassy Plants in this list are not all actual grasses, but have the appearance
that is commonly called “grassy.”
Woodlanders are traditional plants found in the woods or forest edges.
Shade conditions mean the plant receives no direct sunlight; Part Shade
means a half-day or less of full sunlight; Full Sun means a plant receives
six hours or more of sun daily during the growing season.
Wet soil preferences mean the plant does not require good drainage and
must never be allowed to dry out. Most plants prefer moist, well-drained
soil. Dry means the soil should not remain moist regularly.
Plants marked Native Plant* will be used in planting the new Woodland
Garden at the Nature Center.
Deer or Rabbit Resistant means that although they may be sampled, they
will most likely not be devoured by them.
Evergreen plants hold their foliage through the winter. Semi-evergreen
plants keep their foliage through part of winter and may hold it
throughout an easy winter.
Please note that all selections offered in this catalog
may not be available at the Plant Sale on May 10.
If you see it in this catalog, please pre-order to ensure you get it!

Plant This, Not That
Many non-native plants have escaped from garden plantings and displaced native
plants in Ohio. Our native insects and birds, which did not co-evolve with these exotic
plants, cannot usually access food from them successfully. They need native plants to
survive. Did you know a Chickadee brings over 300 caterpillars to feed each fledgling
each day during nesting season? Let’s make it easier for them to feed their young.

* A note on Walleriana Impatiens: Downy Mildew, a water based mold, has been
affecting these plants over the last 3 years in our area. The mold is spread through
mulch. If your impatiens have been affected by Downy Mildew in the last two years,
we recommend that you avoid planting them for the next 3-5 years. The Impatiens
from our grower are free of Downy Mildew when we receive them.
