The Plant Sale, a long-standing volunteer tradition, has a task for anyone who is willing to give of their time. On May 7, we create all of our Plant Sale catalog orders for delivery. Volunteers can assist with set-up, assembling orders, auditing orders (extensive plant knowledge necessary) or assisting the auditors. On May 10, we open the Plant Sale to the public. The Nature Center parking lot becomes a plant showroom for customers. Volunteers can assist with set-up, checkout, the children's craft or with the curb-side valet. The Nature Center is planning to update the Rusty Knight Wildflower Garden located southeast of the Nature Center building. The Shaker Lakes Garden Club installed this garden in the early 1970s in honor of one of their esteemed members and ardent Nature Center supporter, Rusty Knight. After 40 years, the garden has naturally shifted from being an open wildflower garden to a woodland space. A few invasive species have crept in, as well. Currently, the garden primarily features spring woodland flowers. The new plan includes flowering plants for every season. The renovated Rusty Knight Woodland Garden will feature plants that thrive in the shaded understory of our mature forest. New plants will be installed, and the hillside and trails will be improved to reduce erosion. This garden will be an example of what a woodland garden can look like and will highlight native plants that will thrive in a typical northeast Ohio shade garden. A donation of $5 will help purchase two individual flower plugs; $15 will cover the cost of a small shrub. An anonymous donor has generously offered to match Plant Sale donations for the Rusty Knight Woodland Garden, so your donation will go even further! Thank you for your support. Become a Member of the Nature Center Membership in the Nature Center helps us fulfill our mission to conserve a natural area, connect people to nature and inspire environmental stewardship. Thanks to the support of members and donors, the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes serves a vital role as a wild urban refuge that offers a sense of community for those who enjoy the many fascinating wonders of nature. Membership benefits include: • Knowing you support one of the premier wild areas in Northeast Ohio that annually engages over 17,000 children with nature. • Reduced delivery fee for Plant Sale Pre-Orders. • Discounts on camps and family programs. • Early registration for our most popular programs. • Discounts on facility rentals, B’earthday parties, and Duck Pond purchases. • Free admission to participating nature centers nationwide. Some plants are adaptable to more or less light, with more or less regular watering. Here is a key to the meanings of the terms used in the descriptions: Native, as used in this catalog, means a plant that occurs naturally in Ohio. A cultivar can be bred from it. Groundcover means a spreading plant that can be used to create an unbroken swathe that stifles weeds once established. Ferns are flowerless, seedless plants that reproduce by means of spores. Many, not all, are evergreen. Perennials are non-woody plants that do not die at the end of their growing season, but go dormant and return in future years. Shrubs, like trees, have a woody structure that does not die back in winter. Vines included in this list are all perennial, and all have woody structures. Grassy Plants in this list are not all actual grasses, but have the appearance that is commonly called “grassy.” Woodlanders are traditional plants found in the woods or forest edges. Shade conditions mean the plant receives no direct sunlight; Part Shade means a half-day or less of full sunlight; Full Sun means a plant receives six hours or more of sun daily during the growing season. Wet soil preferences mean the plant does not require good drainage and must never be allowed to dry out. Most plants prefer moist, well-drained soil. Dry means the soil should not remain moist regularly. Plants marked Native Plant* will be used in planting the new Woodland Garden at the Nature Center. Deer or Rabbit Resistant means that although they may be sampled, they will most likely not be devoured by them. Evergreen plants hold their foliage through the winter. Semi-evergreen plants keep their foliage through part of winter and may hold it throughout an easy winter. Please note that all selections offered in this catalog may not be available at the Plant Sale on May 10. If you see it in this catalog, please pre-order to ensure you get it! 6 Best-Seller List In case you have limited time to browse this catalog, please consider the following list of Best-Seller plants to choose from. The mold is spread through mulch. If your impatiens have been affected by Downy Mildew in the last two years, we recommend that you avoid planting them for the next 3-5 years. The Impatiens from our grower are free of Downy Mildew when we receive them. 24 African Marigold Annual Pots 4.5 inch Pots $4 Sun to Part Sun 170Supertunia - Pink 147 Angelonia - Blue Bicolor 171Supertunia - White 148Bacopa - White 172 Sweet Potato Vine - Blackie 149Bacopa - Lavender 173 Sweet Potato Vine -Marguerite 150Calibrachoa (Trailing) - Purple 174Verbena (Trailing) - Rose 151Calibrachoa (Trailing) - Pink 175Verbena (Trailing) - Violet 152Calibrachoa (Trailing) - White 176 Vinca Vine - Green/white 153 Dracaena Spikes 154Geranium - Lavender Part Sun to Shade 155Geranium - Magenta 177Begonia (Dragon Wing) – Pink 156Geranium - Pink 157 Geranium - Red 158Geranium - Salmon 159Geranium - White 160Heliotrope - Blue 161Helichrysum – Silver/gray 162Impatiens (New Guinea) - Red 163Impatiens (New Guinea) Deep Purple 164Impatiens (New Guinea) - Rose 165Impatiens (New Guinea) - White 166Lantana - Rose 167Lantana - Yellow 168Supertunia - Blue 169Supertunia - Magenta 178 Begonia (Tuberous) – Appleblossom 179Begonia (Tuberous) – Orange Cherries 180Begonia (Tuberous) – Red 181Begonia (Tuberous) – Rose 182Begonia (Tuberous) – Yellow 183Fuchsia (Upright) Firecracker/orange 184Fuchsia (Trailing) - Pink/blue 185Browallia Blue Bells 186Coleus - Redhead 187Coleus - Chocolate Covered 188Coleus Flamingo - Burgundy 189Coleus - Trailing Plum 190Lobelia (Trailing) - Blue 191Sprengeri - Asparagus Fern What Plants Would You Like?
