The Collection and the Discovery OPAC
The Joseph Simeon Flipper Library Collection of over 200,000 resources can be accessed via the college
website through the library’s web page. A direct link to the library’s Discovery OPAC is also located on
each student’s computer desktop for ease of access. The library staff assists all library patrons (students,
faculty, and staff) in locating references and in using the OPAC.
The OPAC is the first hyperlink under resources of the library’s web page and is entitled J. S. Flipper
Library Catalog. This link was edited for updates in 2012. Regular and ongoing updates are
performed. The library catalog contains records of print books, eBooks, DVDs, CDs, and audiobooks.
In addition to access to all cataloged items, the OPAC contains a host of valuable resources and useful
links. Access to search the library’s catalog, the university’s home web page, the library’s web page, the
Virtual Library, the Digital Library, self-service and social media forums are available on the OPAC
Discovery page. Basic information such as the library’s operation hours, email, and phone number
contacts are also found under the About the Library Tab on this page. The Search Tab allows students
to conduct simple, browse, advanced, icon, cross library, special, and frequently asked questions
searches. An excess of 200 electronic resources and databases are listed on this page, these useful links
are separated by various tabs entitled: AV and News, Citation Formats, Math and Science, eBooks,
DISCUS, EBSCOhost, LIRN, JSTOR, Religious and Resourceful Links and Database tabs. These
useful links grant students ease of use and minimal click access to resources to help ensure a successful
matriculation here at Allen University. The live chat and email options on this page allow patrons the
ability to Ask-a-Librarian questions and to receive answers in response to their questions.

Designed specifically for academic institutions, Academic Search Premier is a multi-disciplinary full

titles. In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for more than 8,500
journals. This scholarly collection offers information in nearly every area of academic study including:

Regional Business News
Regional Business News incorporates more than 80 regional business publications covering all
metropolitan and rural areas within the United States. Included in this database are Arizona Business,
Business North Carolina, Crain's New York Business (and other Crain Communications editions), Des
Moines Business Record, Enterprise Salt Lake City, Fort Worth Business Press, Orange County
Business Journal, Westchester County Business Journal, etc.
MEDLINE
MEDLINE provides authoritative medical information on medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary
medicine, the health care system, pre-clinical sciences, and much more. Created by the National Library
of Medicine, MEDLINE uses MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) indexing with tree, tree hierarchy,
subheadings and explosion capabilities to search citations from over 5,600 current biomedical journals.
Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia
For students and adults alike, the Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia database indexes over
25,000 records, covering an array of topics. Full text for each record may be easily accessed by double
clicking on the topic from the display. The database contains various images, offers brief biographies as
well as information in a variety of subject areas. This database is updated annually.
Business Source Premier
Business Source Premier is the industry’s most used business research database, providing full text for
more than 2,300 journals, including full text for more than 1,100 peer-reviewed business publications.
This database provides full text back to 1886, and searchable cited references back to 1998. Journal
ranking studies reveal that Business Source Premier is superior to the competition in full text coverage
in all disciplines of business, including marketing, management, MIS, POM, accounting, finance and
economics. Business Source Premier contains full text from the world's top management and marketing

Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition
Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition provides nearly 550 scholarly full text journals focusing on
many medical disciplines. Also featured are abstracts and indexing for nearly 850 journals. Coverage of
nursing and allied health is particularly strong, including full text from Creative Nursing, Issues in
Comprehensive Pediatric Nursing, Issues in Mental Health Nursing, Journal of Advanced Nursing,
Journal of Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing, Journal of Clinical Nursing, Journal of Community
Health Nursing, Journal of Nursing Management, Nursing Ethics, Nursing Forum, Nursing Inquiry, and
many more. In addition, this database includes AHFS Consumer Medication Information, which

Primary Search
Primary Search, designed specifically for elementary school libraries and public library children’s
rooms, contains full text for more than 70 popular, elementary school magazines. All full text articles
are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles). In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing
and abstracts for nearly 100 magazines. Examples of publications covered in Primary Search include:
Appleseeds, Boys’ Life, Cobblestone, Cricket, Highlights for Children, Hopscotch, Jack & Jill,
Ladybug, Ranger Rick, Science World, Spider, SuperScience, Time for Kids, Turtle, and many more.

The Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection is a comprehensive database providing nearly 560
full text publications. The database covers topics such as emotional and behavioral characteristics,
psychiatry & psychology, mental processes, anthropology, and observational and experimental methods.
In addition to the full text, indexing and abstracts are provided for all journals in the collection.

ERIC, the Education Resource Information Center, provides access to education literature and resources.
The database provides access to information from journals included in the Current Index of Journals in
Education and Resources in Education Index. The database contains more than 1.3 million records and

Military & Government Collection
Designed to offer current news pertaining to all branches of the military, this database offers a thorough
collection of periodicals, academic journals and other content pertinent to the increasing needs of those

Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts (LISTA) indexes more than 560 core journals,
nearly 50 priority journals, and 125 selective journals; plus books, research reports and proceedings.
Subject coverage includes librarianship, classification, cataloging, bibliometrics, online information
retrieval, information management and more. Coverage in the database extends back as far as the mid1960s. It is EBSCO Publishing’s intention to provide access to LISTA on a continual basis at
www.libraryresearch.com. Customers currently subscribing to other EBSCOhost databases may elect to
have LISTA added to their EBSCOhost profile.

GreenFILE
GreenFILE offers well-researched information covering all aspects of human impact to the environment.
Its collection of scholarly, government and general-interest titles includes content on the environmental
effects of individuals, corporations and local/national governments, and what can be done at each level
to minimize these effects. Multidisciplinary by nature, GreenFILE draws on the connections between the
environment and a variety of disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health and technology.
Topics covered include global climate change, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture,
renewable energy, recycling, and more. The database provides indexing and abstracts for more than
538,000 records, as well as Open Access full text for more than 5,800 records.
European Views of the American: 1493 to 1750
This new bibliographic database is a valuable index for libraries, scholars and individuals interested in
European works that relate to the Americas. EBSCO Publishing, in cooperation with the John Carter
Brown Library, has created this resource from “European Americana: A Chronological Guide to Works
Printed In Europe Relating to The Americas, 1493-1750,” the authoritative bibliography that is wellknown and respected by scholars worldwide. The database contains more than 32,000 entries and is a
comprehensive guide to printed records about the Americas written in Europe before 1750.
Teacher Reference Center

AGRICOLA
AGRICOLA contains bibliographic records from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National
Agricultural Library. This database contains more than 4.8 million citations. The citations are comprised
of journal articles, book chapters, monographs, theses, patents, software, audiovisual materials, and
technical reports related to agriculture. AGRICOLA. encompasses all aspects of agriculture and allied
