The multiplicity of our perceptions
Our perceptions are shaped, pre-determined ,they
are not neutral but depend on the multiple
factors influencing them:
Here are at work our imagination, our desires, our
memories,the patterns/values inherited from our
family, our education, our hobbies …
Or simply…
Our culture
What is culture?
•  “A fish will realize that he needs water only at
the moment when he’s not in it anymore.”
•  Our culture means to us what the water means
to the fish. We live and breathe through it.
It’s your turn…

Stereotypes…
You’ve just been brought face to face to
several stereotypes about countries and
nationalities.
But what is a stereotype?
Do you know other stereotypes that
are related to a country?
Learn more about it… à
A definition of the stereotype
The stereotype „designates the simplified descriptive
categories through which we try to situate others or a
group of individuals”. (Fischer, 1987)
The stereotypes therefore correspond to traits or
behaviours which we attribute to others in an arbitrary
way. In that sense, the stereotypes are a
manifestation of prejudices.

Other stereotypes…
What stereotypes
circulate about :
The vegetarians:
The
blondes:
The hippies
…
…
…
…
…
…
…
The environmentalists:
…
The truckers
…
…
…
…
…
The
skaters:
…
…
The punks:
…
…
…
…
…
…
The doctors:
…
…
…
It is quite normal to have stereotypes, it is
even essential : in order to be able to
imagine something we are not familiar
with, we- human beings- need to feed our
imagination. Stereotypes help us to
prepare ourselves for the unknown.
Although, it is important to break with
stereotypes. It therefore should serve us
as a springboard to discover other
cultures.
