Any child interested in participating in these workshops is encouraged to attend.
Please choose workshops from your grade group. The workshops are assigned on a
first-come, first-served basis. *You must list at least 4 choices, 3 for grades 6-8, in
order of preference. Every effort will be made to give students their preference.
You will be notified if there is a problem, and your enrollment will be refunded if there
is no space. Registrations can be mailed to the address listed on the form or
completed online at www.ctgifted.org.

Animal Groups
Let’s Dance! Bee Bot Robot Boogie!
As science sleuths, come investigate the weird and
wacky world of animals! We will learn how to
identify animals by their characteristics, such as
their coats of fur or feathers. We will compare their
characteristics and classify the animals into groups.
Have fun programming a Bee Bot robotic bumble
bee to dance! You will work in teams of two to
create a sequence of dance steps and develop a code
for the robot to execute them!

There is no better way to learn about programming
than playing with kid-friendly robots! In this session
we will use age-appropriate Kibo robots and barcoded wooden blocks to help you learn about coding
and engineering basics in a playful way.
Use your creativity in this workshop, where you will
use marbles and other materials to create Jackson
Pollock inspired paintings.

All K-1 children will be assigned to participate in a fun breakout
session in between their workshops.
It will be either a Zumba Class or a fun Bowling Game in the gym.
The children will be escorted by volunteers to and from the gym.

into the food chain. Make
connections with peers to discover
how we are all a part of this web of
life.
Using photographs and dried specimens,
you will learn to classify local species of
marine invertebrates and then dissect a
local species of squid in order to classify

We will design, create and test our own
mini roller coasters to see how the laws
of forces and motion interact in this
high action, inquiry-based workshop!
Make some interesting crafts from
recycled items and create some unique
products, such as collages, from
recycled materials. Use your
imagination and discover new uses for
old materials!
Try a new activity and learn about the
martial arts! The martial arts foster
self-confidence, focus and discipline as
well as respect for others, and are a lot
of fun to learn. You will experience
transformational physical fitness and
self-reliance milestones, gaining

Investigate Careers in STEAM at
Sikorsky, meet STEAM
professionals and learn about ways to
take you from being a student to Full
STEAM Ahead into a career in a
STEAM field. (STEAM is Science,
Technology, Engineering, Arts, and
Mathematics.)
Using photographs and dried specimens,

Create a Walter Wick "I Spy"-inspired
book. Working in teams, build
miniature sets from a collection of
theme-based objects and backdrops.
Using phone and tablet cameras, we
will photograph the built sets in a series
of photo shoots. We will then assemble
the photographs into a book using
Microsoft PowerPoint. Finally, from
the objects in the sets, we will create
themes that will become the text of our
illustrated collaborative book.

Measuring Toxins in Air and Water
Water and air quality are two issues facing Connecticut's environmental health today. You will participate in
simulations to test water quality for toxins, identify and measure the success of biological indicators for both air and
water and build particle sensors for air quality measurements. Come and learn how environment scientists assess the
environment for a healthier Connecticut.

A Tiger's Tale: Training for Veterinary Care &
Beyond in the Modern Zoo
Be a Great Photographer
Through an introduction to modern training practices, you
will be immersed into the world of 21st century zoological
husbandry and veterinary training. Live animal
ambassadors and hands-on training exercises will be
incorporated.
Photography can be a wonderful means for selfexpression. In this workshop, you will learn about
composition and lighting to take interesting photos, and
use computer editing to make them even better!

WORKSHOP #1 by Kelly Woodard – Destination Imagination: The Power of Rising to a Challenge
Are you looking for a fun and engaging way to support your child with social skills, creativity and critical thinking? Did
you know that 60-80% of the jobs that our children will have access to upon graduation do not even exist yet?
Destination Imagination is a leading voice in the belief that the development of essential skills like communication,
collaboration and critical thinking can be achieved through fun, engaging and creative projects. Come and experience
what Destination Imagination is, learn about our partnerships with NASA, LEGO and National Geographic, and see how
you and your child can get involved!
Kelly Woodard is the Affiliate Growth Director of Destination Imagination, Connecticut. She recognizes the importance of engaging
young minds in creative, challenging real-world projects.
WORKSHOP #2 by Kate Maupin – Gifted 101
Manipulation: the ability to understand and change ones environment through careful and meaningful ways. Though the
word has taken on distinctly negative connotations, the ability to manipulate one’s environment is actually a higher level
thinking quality and it can be used very positively. This workshop outlines the methods of manipulation gifted students
can use, and how to harness this ability towards leadership and other positive outcomes.
Kate Maupin is a gifted education teacher and enrichment specialist and is the author of the book: Cheating, Dishonesty, and
Manipulation: Why Bright Kids Do It. She is an alumna of the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented at UCONN and
has worked with students throughout New England, as well as in China and Germany, before settling in Connecticut.
WORKSHOP #3 by Denise Hanks – The Vision Workshop: 3 Keys to Accelerating Your Success
This workshop utilizes effective success-building strategies and common universal principles to reveal the methods
required to move beyond inertia, take action, and build a richer, fuller life. Participants will walk away with tips,
techniques, and practical advice for implementing these critical strategies in order to create an action plan for success,
and achieve amazing results. Whether you would like to create a better work/life balance, take action on creating a
healthier lifestyle, or find or mend a relationship, you will leave knowing how to build your dreams in order to enjoy a
richer, fuller life experience. Participants should come armed with paper, a pen, an open mind and a desire to manifest
amazing growth and change in their life.

WORKSHOP #4 by Jessica Martinez – RULER for Emotional Intelligence
Emotions drive learning, decision-making, creativity, relationships, and health. RULER is an acronym that stands for
Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing and Regulating emotions. RULER is an evidence-based approach for
integrating social and emotional learning into schools, and teaches the skills of emotional intelligence. RULER was
created by the Yale Center of Emotional Intelligence, and was adopted by the Bridgeport Board of Education. It
encompasses a partnership with Teachers, Students and Families on recognizing, understanding and regulating emotions
to maximize academic growth. Research shows that children are not able to learn effectively when their emotions take
over their brains. Jessica Martinez has been trained and certified by the Yale Center of Emotional Intelligence to teach
parents across the district. In this workshop, learn more about the program and put it to use in your family now.
