Abstract
This study is about Comic Strips As Media To Develop Students’
Writing Ability in Composing Recount Text for The Tenth Graders Of SMA
MUHAMMADIYAH 2 SIDOARJO. The statement of the problem in this study
is: Does comic strips develop students’ writing ability in composing recount
text? The objective of the study is to find out whether comic strips develop
students’ writing ability in composing recount text.The research methodology
was an experimental research,which was conducted in two clasess:the
experimental group and control group as sample. There are two kind of test.
They are pre test and post test. After the data had been collected using test, it
was found that the pre test average of the experimental group was 66,9 and
control group was 65,4. While the post test average of the experimental group
was 77,1 and control group was 68,7.It was mean that comic strips successful
develop students’ writing ability in composing recount text.

Abstrak
Penelitian ini adalah tentang Komik Strip Sebagai Media Untuk
Mengembangkan Kemampuan Menulis Siswa Dalam Mengarang Teks
Recount Untuk Kelas Sepuluh Di SMA MUHAMMADIYAH 2 SIDOARJO.
Rumusan masalah dalam penelitian
ini adalah Apakah komik strip
mengembangkan kemampuan menulis siswa dalam menyusun teks recount?
Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah komik strips
mengembangkan kemampuan menulis siswa dalam mengarang teks recount.
Penelitian ini menggunakan metode eksperimen,terdiri dari 2 kelas yaitu
kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol sebagai sampel. Ada 2 macam
tes yaitu tes awal dan tes akhir.Setelah data di kumpulkan menggunakan tes,di
temukan bahwa rata-rata tes awal kelas eksperimen adalah 66,9 dan kelas
kontrol adalah 65,4. Sedangkan rata-rata tes akhir kelas eksperimen adalah
77,1 dan kelas kontrol adalah 68,7.Itu berarti komik strips berhasil
mengembangkan kemampuan menulis siswa dalam mengarang teks recount.

INTRODUCTION
English is the first foreign language taught at every school in Indonesia. The
Indonesian goverment chooses English as the first foreign language to be taught in schools
and as a major subject for the students from elementary school to university students,
students realize how important English in their life, so they intend to master it. Students must
master four language skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students think that
writing is a boring activity and it is uninteresting for them. They do not have enough
vocabulary and they are afraid to make something wrong with the grammar, too.
Recount text is one of materials which is taught at tenth grade in curriculum 2013.To
attract the students attraction ,the writer use the comic strips, because it consists of picture.
Comic Strips are series of pictures that show a set of actions chronologically to form a story
and sometimes use dialogs in the form of script or writing. Using comic strips as media in
teaching and learning process is expected to stimulate the students’ interest in having habit of
writing. For that reason, the writer focus on writing ability in composing recount text using
comic strips for tenth graders of SMA MUHAMMADIYAH 2 SIDOARJO as the object of
the research.
FINDING AND DISCUSSION
Based on the result of pre-test and post-test that the students did, it can be concluded
that the average score of pre-test was 66,9. The highest score was 79 and the lowest score
was 60. After she gave them treatment, which was using comic strips, the result of the posttest was different from the pre test.The average score of post-test was 77,1. The highest score
was 90 and the lowest score was 70. The students’ competence of pre-test before they were
given treatment was fair, but after they were given treatment was very good (70-90). It
means that teaching writing recount text
using comic strips in experimental class was
successful.
Based on the result of the pre-test and post-test that the students did, it can be
concluded that the average score of pre-test was 65, 4. The highest score was 70 and the
lowest score was 50. After she gave them treatment, which was not using comic strips, the

result of the post-test was different from the pre-test. The average score of the post-test was
68,7 , the highest score was 73 and the lowest score was 55. The students’ competence of pretest before they were given treatment was good, but after they were given treatment was fair.
It means that teaching writing recount text without using comic strips in control class was not
successful.
CONCLUSION
From the discussion, some points can be concluded as follows:
1. The average score of the students who were taught writing recount text using comic
strips is 77,1. In the table of achievement it is on the range of 71-80 which is
categorized as good. Therefore the students’ achievements who were taught writing
recount text using comic strips is good.
2. The average score of the students who were taught writing recount text without comic
strips is 68,7 . In the table of achievement it is on the range of 61- 70 which is
categorized as fair. Therefore the students` achievements who were taught writing
recount text without using comic strips is fair.
It means that using comic strips in teaching writing recount text for the tenth graders of
SMA MUHAMMADIYAH 2 SIDOARJO is effective.
