Religion Unifies People Shared beliefs Stable force in world of constant warfare and political turmoil Gave all people the opportunity for salvation Village church unified people & was a religious & social center Church Justice All Christians (King peasants) subjects to canon law (church law) Setup courts to try people who violated canon law Two harsh punishments- Threats to kings o Excommunication- banished from the Church King denied salvation All vassals were freed of their obligations to him o Interdict- used if excommunicated king continued to disobey the Pope Sacraments & religious services would not be performed in the king’s lands King’s subjects believed they would be doomed to hell if they could not receive the sacraments.
