Message from the President
Welcome to the first newsletter of 2017, and welcome to what should be another exciting golf season!
If you’re not a winter golfer, or have better sense
than some of us, you may not be aware of the many
improvements going on around our course. We
have new tee boxes in work on holes 4 and 9, more
trees have been removed, tree stumps have been
ground with the surrounding areas seeded, the
mega root that spanned the cart path next to the
#10 blue tee has been removed and… the late season seeding has the course ready to bounce back
strong as spring arrives. We look forward to playing
Bon Air as the challenging course we have come to
know.
As is usual for this time of year, our membership is
at its low point. We’ll see the numbers rise during
the coming months and dip again this time next
year. Late in 2016 we introduced yet another membership category, Non-resident. We hope to have
dedicated Bon Air members who have retired to
warmer climates stay with us and have a place to
play when they return to the area to visit family and
friends. Thanks to the Membership Committee, and
all who have contributed, for their tireless efforts.
As always, please recommend Bon
Air to your friends and colleagues.
Once they experience Bon Air,
they’ll thank you for it for years to
come.
One area where we’d like to expand, in support of our membership
and to attract new golfers, is the
formation of a Technology Commit- Jack Rowe - President
tee. We are looking for volunteers
to help form this committee and make Bon Air visible and
viable in the digital age. Please contact me or the Pro
Shop if interested in volunteering or if you have any questions.
Finally, I’d like to thank the outgoing members of the
board for their years of service and dedication. Without
these individuals, and many, many before them, we would
not have this tremendous club where we can enjoy the
golf and friendships that are so important to us. Thanks to
Don Smith, Jack Stoneberg and Joe Herkalo. And welcome to their replacements, Mike Meily, Marc Moyer and
John Zeidler. And it’s not too early to start thinking of
becoming a board member for 2018!
See you at the club!

From the Pro/GM
This winter I have had the opportunity to
once again spend a few days in Orlando,
Florida attending the PGA Teaching &
Coaching Summit, the PGA Demo Day
and the PGA Merchandise Show. Many
of you may have viewed portions of these
events on the Golf Channel but to be able
to see it all in person is amazing.
GM/Pro —
Jeff Glatfelter
First of all, spending two days soaking in
everything I could from the worlds greatest
instructors was truly enlightening. Much
of what many of the instructors shared
was derived by using force plates, Sam
PuttLabs, TrackMan launch monitors and
more of the latest and greatest technology
but when they actually got down to teaching lessons, the nuts and bolts of the golf
swing remain relatively unchanged. Sure,
there are a few world class athletes doing
some unique things to impress us on Sundays but sound fundamentals are still the
key for the average player. If this is the
year you are going to commit to shooting
lower scores, contact Travis or I to help
put an improvement plan together for the
upcoming season .
The PGA Demo Day and Merchandise
Show is every golfer’s fantasy. Every
club, ball, shoe, shirt, bag, cart or golf nickknack known to man is there to put your
hands on. Competition for each golfer’s
expendable income is fierce among the
manufacturers. They are constantly tweaking every variable to eke out another couple
of yards or to improve playability. Some of
you may envy my opportunity to explore all
of the newest and greatest golf gear but
when the fun is over I somehow have to select from a million sq. ft. of merchandise to
stock a 500 sq. ft. golf shop. While the task
is challenging, I think we’ve put together a
very nice product mix for the upcoming season. One item you’ll want to make sure you
try out is the new Epic Driver from Callaway.
When selecting from the new golf balls being
introduced in 2017, I would suggest focusing
on how the ball feels while putting and chipping because they are all traveling a very
similar distance. Once again we will focus on
Callaway, Mizuno and Tour Edge for our full
service club fitting but we will also have Ping
irons available to try out. We have access to
many other equipment lines so please don’t
hesitate to ask about brands you don’t see in
the shop. I look forward to serving all of your
golfing needs in the upcoming golf season
and wish all the best!
From the Grounds Department
Butch Howard — Golf
Course Superintendent
The fall member work day was a great
success. We had over a dozen members
participate in the morning long task on
cleaning up the various stump holes
throughout the course and removing additional trees on the right side of #18. A big
thank you goes out to all those who attended.
on holes 7,9,10 and 11. We have also
removed the tree roots in the cart path by
10 tees; it is a much smoother ride now.
The mild winter weather has allowed us
the opportunity to work outside more often
and complete some projects that would be
normally done in March.
Work is progressing on the walkway behind 12 green. We will complete that project as time allows but before opening day.
Wood chips were added to cart paths on
1,5,7,9 and 10. The ball washer beds
have been cleaned edged and now await
a pre-emergent herbicide application before mulching. We have been working
around the parking lot area removing
shrubs and trimming others. It is a much
cleaner looking area as a result.
The tee project is on schedule to be completed by the first week in March. New
tees are being constructed on holes 4 and
9 with the leveling on the existing upper
tee on #6 and the white tee on #18. The
sod we removed from the new tee areas
was reused to make repairs to cart paths
Most of the stump holes have been filled,
seeded and covered. A few stumps still
remain and the project will completed
within the next week or two.
We have rolled greens as needed this
winter in order to keep them as smooth as
possible.
On bad weather days we have been working on reconditioning course equipment.
Everything from ball washers to benches
has been cleaned repaired and painted.
We have also spent considerable time on
servicing our equipment. Reel and blade
sharpening, fluid, belt and hose changes
along with minor and sometimes more
extensive repairs are being completed.
The maintenance staff has been very busy
this winter to make the course ready for a
great spring golfing season.
