On April 9 , 1942 , the last wea ry remnunts of the Filipino
and American troops on Bataan eith er

surrendered to th e Jap a nese forc es .
For n onths they ha d held
off an arr.iy ma ny tines their siz e a n i fully eq uip pe d with food

They were exhausted;
they had vi.rtually no food left; and t he ir equ ipment was almost
entir el y us ed up•
Th ese Filipino ::i nd L.noric a n soldiers had

of human warfar e .

fighters on Bataan achieved a great vict ory , even in defeat .
The Filipinos and Ar.iericans , fi ghting and dying sid e by sid e ,
bought America four precious months to recover from th e disaster
of Pea rl Ha rbor .
By their fiq;ht against i r'1pos sibl e odds , the y
gave proof of t he str eng th of th o denocratic i deal of fr ee dom
and human equal ity .

The gallantry of t he Filipino p eople and their fi gh ting

They fought without being asked to fight by t he Gove rnment or
the Presid ent of the United States .
They fou gh t b ecause they
had something worth fi gh ting for -- their own liberty -- and
they knew it .
On Bataan t here were ap proximat ely seven
Filipino soldiers for each Anerican soldi er .
The majori t y
of General IJa cArthur ' s infantry cons ist ed of Filipinos , four fifths of them citizen- soldiers .
On the bomb- scarr ed and
blood- stained battlefields of Bataa n , Americans and Filipinos
gave proof to the world t ha t free £'1e n can fi gh t side by side
in mutual confidence and with !'llltua l r espe ct .
In a speec h short - wa ved to t he Phili pp ines on Fe bruary
20 , speaking with the advance authorization of the President
of the United St a tes , President rp ezon stated :
