A router is the small black box connected to your modem that has blinking lights. You might not understand exactly how it works, but you do know that without it, no Wi-Fi devices can connect to the Internet. That includes smartphones, computers, tablets, gaming systems, smart TVs, etc. The good news: with just a little knowledge, it’s easy to avoid some common home networking mistakes. Router Location While you don’t need to see your router for it to work effectively, it’s a mistake to stick it in an out-of-the-way place in the corner of your house, shut inside a cabinet or down in a concrete basement. Think of your router as a mini tower that broadcasts signals evenly throughout the house. A router works best in an open spot as close to the center of the house as possible; and the higher up the antenna, the better. You may also want to decide where you will need most of the wireless network coverage and place the router close by if possible. Anywhere else may lead to poor wireless performance. CHAT WITH US! Correct Connections When hooking up a new router, be careful not to plug the Ethernet cable into the wrong port. Doing so prevents the router from receiving an Internet connection, which is required to configure many of today’s wireless routers. Simply check to make sure that the cable is plugged into the WAN/Internet port on the router. Reliable Power Another mistake is to plug your router directly into a wall outlet or power strip. In the case of an electrical surge, it could knock your wireless service out for a few minutes while the system reboots. But it could also fry the router completely requiring you to get a new one. It’s a good idea to plug into a backup power supply. You can find these at most big-box stores for around $50 and up. Not only will it protect the router from power surges, but it also allows time to shut down the equipment properly in the event of an outage or approaching storm. Outdated Equipment Often people don’t realize how much of a drag old devices can be on wireless performance. That 5-year-old smartphone or laptop? It can kill Wi-Fi speed for every single device using the system. Your Wi-Fi may also experience slow speed due to the quality or age of your router. While it’s admirable to use devices that you buy for as long as possible, at some point it may not be worth the cost in Internet performance. While it would be impossible to solve every home networking issue in a single article, the preceding information covers some of the more common errors. A final note: write down all of your old passwords and settings before upgrading to a new router. You will thank us later.
