Descendants of William Norton

Descendants of William Norton
Generation No. 1
1. WILLIAM3 NORTON (WILLIAM2, WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1739 in New Hanover County,
North Carolina, and died August 01, 1806 in Horry County, South Carolina. He married
PATIENCE HARRELSON Abt. 1780 in South Carolina, daughter of BENJAMIN
HARRELSON and SELAH COMMANDER. She was born Abt. 1769 in Marion County, South
Carolina, and died Abt. 1833 in Barbour County, Alabama.
Notes for WILLIAM NORTON:
Godfrey, Early Settlers of Barbour County, Alabama, Vol. 1 and 2, Southern Heritage Press,
South Carolina.
Godfrey reports that William Norton was a Revolutionary Soldier. In researching Nortons of
North Carolina, I find two William Nortons and an Isom Norton who served in the 2nd battalion
of North Carolina, in the company of Captain Spain. This battalion was captured in South
Carolina by the British about 1780 and was decommissioned in 1783 in South Carolina. Certainly
that puts William Norton in the right place to marry Patience Harralson Minsey, a widow in the
early 1780s to very late 1770s.

The following information comes from Robert Stapleton who recorded the Norton family
history recorded and researched by his father, Dr. William C. Stapleton of Tuscaloosa, Alabama
for his wife who was a Norton. His Aunt Betty Bounds, also Lee Bounds and Grace Norton Dunn
all gathered information that is included. On July 8, 2000, all their research was posted at
http://members.tripod.com/~RobertStapleton/staplenorton.html
When it moved from its location in March of 2000, Julie traced it by searching yahoo.com on
Norton Stapleton.
This history is an effort to record the descendants of William Norton during the latter part of the
eighteenth century. In 1788 he executed the will of his grandfather, William Norton of Bladen
County, North Carolina. The will was written in 1751. Mentioned in the will and estate
proceedings were his wife Mary Elizabeth Seymore, and grandson John Smirdmoor. Sons of
William and James were in Georgetown at the time of the 1790 census. Thomas moved to
Georgia.
Notes for PATIENCE HARRELSON:
Notes on approximate birth of Benjamin Harralson is from Family Ties, web site I56779. Notes
from Linda McNish indicate that Selah Commander Harrelson, his wife may have died 1854. This
is inconsistent with birth dates of children. There may have been another wife, daughter, or the
date maybe incorrect. Linda got the date from
18. Cassdy, Pat [[email protected]].
This date of date of death may be for a later Selah Commander or this may be an incorrect wife.
As always, keep an open mind....Also we know that Patience Norton was a widow before she
married William Norton. She is reportedly Patience Minsey in Godfrey. Reasonable, but can't find
any other verification of the Minsey connection. Other places call her first husband Miller.
Ms. Bettie Bounds ([email protected] (Bettie Bounds)) reports that "Apparently a Mrs.
Passemore of Dothan had copies of diary pages of Wm. Kennedy Norton. In them , he mentioned
" my aged aunt, Mrs. Bethea", or some such reference, by which 'her' Celia and our Patience were
traced as sisters. "

and MARY VICK. She was born Abt. 1788 in Horry County, South Carolina, and died Abt. 1837
in Barbour County, Alabama.
Notes for WILLIAM NORTON, JR.:
Notes from Godfrey, Early Settlers of Barbour County, Alabama, Southern Heritage Press.
William Norton, Jr. along with Stephen Johnson and others, came to Pike County, Alabama about
1826, settling in the section from which Barbour County was formed in 1832.
He was joined by his brother John Wesley Norton and his mother Patience Norton about 1830.
My own research shows that:
In the 1820 census in Horry County, SC, John and Patience are listed. John is a surveyor in Horry
County but disappears from surveying about 1824.

December 1806. He served as a preacher and Presiding Elder in the Carolinas, Tennessee and
Georgia. He traveled with Bishop Asbury in 1814 and with Bishop M'Kendree in 1817.
Notes for E. ?:
Stapleton reports from church history that JAMES NORTON married 14 March 1822 at the
Georgetown Methodist Church by Rev. William Capers to Mrs. E. Wethers. On 19 December
1826 Mrs. Caroline Elizabeth Duncomb Norton, youngest daughter of Rev. Israel Munds (he had
been married on 3 September 1801 by Rev. Moses Mathews to Mrs. Charlotte D. Meyers. of
Charleston, was married by Mr. Capers to Rev. Abner P. Manly. It may well be that E. ? is E.
Munds and that son has his father 's name and his mother's father's name.
In case there is some connection, Abner P. Manly was also a medical doctor. He was admitted
to the South Carolina Conference of the Methodist Church in 1822 and located in 1827 not long
after his marriage to Elizabeth. The Manly family moved to Alabama On 16 September 1833 in
Montgomery County, Alabama, A. P. Manly witnessed the will of John Breedlove and in 1837 he
was practicing medicine in Selma, Alabama. Apparently, the Manlys next moved to Fayette
County, Texas. Dr. Manly was in 1838 a sponsor and trustee and in 1856 a member of the
monument committee of Ruterville College.

in Horry County, South Carolina, and died March 15, 1862 in Barbour County, Alabama. He
married NANCY ANN PHILLIPS February 18, 1819 in Moore County, North Carolina, daughter
of LEWIS PHILLIPS and CHARITY DICKENSON. She was born July 08, 1802 in Moore
County, North Carolina, and died June 08, 1853 in Barbour County, Alabama.
Notes for JOHN WESLEY NORTON:
Appears in the 1840 Barbour County, Alabama census. Appears in the 1820 Horry County,
South Carolina census with his mother Patience Norton. Many of the land sales list John W. as
surveyor until about 1826 when he appears to have moved to Georgia or Alabama or both. He
and his wife Nancy witnessed the will of his brother William Norton, Jr.'s father in law, Josiah
Harrelson in May 1824 in Horry County, South Carolina.
John W. Norton was admitted to the South Carolina Conference of the Methodist Church in
1815. After serving churches in the Carolinas, he relocated in December 1818 and moved to
Moore County, North Carolina. He was readmitted to the South Carolina Conference in February

Notes for ANGIE GRAVITT:
Betty Norton found a hand written note (written by Louis C. Norton) containing the following
information:
Netie Angiline Gravett, born Dec. 27 1855, Forsythe Co. Ga in the town of Cumming.
Birmingham Public Library: 1920 census shows Angia Norton, white aged 63 birthplace Georgia.
Living in Barbour County at Clayton and Texasville Road.
Vol. 5 ED 14, Sheet 4, Line 42. Also at that location Tina Norton aged 40 (daughter) and Dillard
Norton aged 34 (son).
On February 27, 2000 Julie Norton found the 1860 Census for Forsyth County, Georgia. In the
Census is listed Cicero Gravitt as head of household, a farmer. Cicero was 38 with $90 worth of
personal property, and no real estate value. He was born in Georgia and could not read or write.
Catherine (Mary Catherine Brooks) is listed as an 18 year old female. This may be a second wife
if Mary C. Brooks died or simply an error in age. Catherine is not checked as being unable to read
or write, possibly because she was listed as being 18 and only individuals over twenty were asked
about literacy. Three daughters are listed. The first is Netta A. (our Angie!!!) aged 5, agreeing
with the note from Cicero Norton noted above. The second is Nancy B(Brooks?) 3 years old, and
the third is Amanda at one month(written as 1/12). All the children and Catherine are also listed as
being born in Georgia. Frame for the census is page 495 and 496 of the Forsyth County, Georgia,
Federal Census, 1860. Interestingly, the index lists Cicero and also lists Natta H. Gravitt, taking
Netta A. to be an adult.

Dear Mrs. Oakley:
Your name has been given to me as one who might be able to give me the information that I am
very anxious to secure. I am enclosing a few items copied from the diaries of Rev. William
Kennedy Norton, at one time a minister of the Alabama Conference. I will appreciate it if you can
give me any information concerning his Aunt Bethai mentioned in the item dated August 1, 1854.
Was she related to the family of Hybard with whom Rev. Norton dined? If so, what was this
relationship? Do you know whether "old Aunt Bethai" had any children, and if any of her
descendants are living? If you can not give me this information, can you give me the name and
address of some one who can do so? I believe that the aunt mentioned in the items of 1852 and
the one mentioned in 1854 are one and same. He does not give the surname of either of the aunts
mentioned. Could it be possible that she was either a Sellers or Bethai? He also mentions a cousin
named "Ann".
Further than this he makes no comments in his diaries on other members of the family. My
reason for wanting this information is that I am at work on a genealogy of the Norton family of
which Rev. Norton and my husband are members. I am hoping that I may get in touch with some
one who can give me some old dates that I have been unable to secure. Thanking you for any
information that you may give, and asking that I may hear from you real soon.
With best wishes,
/s/ Mrs. Edward Norton Passmore
