SO MANY WAYS TO GO
10 GOOD REASONS TO TRAVEL BY RAIL
Do what you want
Rail offers unlimited stopovers, a choice of routes and frequent departure
times. From a single country pass or individual tickets to a pass covering
21 countries, there is a pass to cover every itinerary.
XXXXXXXX
All year round
You can forget about the hassles of traffic jams or weather delays.
Trains operate 365 days of the year, rain, hail or snow.
Get off the beaten track
Rail reaches into virtually every corner of every country through
forests, fields and mountains that just aren’t accessible by road.
Meet the locals
Trains offer the opportunity to meet the locals, learn more about their
country and get tips on the best kept secret destinations.
Travel in comfort
Relax and unwind in large comfy seats. Stretch your legs, go to the
bar or enjoy a bistro meal on trains. On the train you are never stuck in
your seat for hours.
More for your dollar
Passes offer free or discounted bonus offers for local transport and
attractions. Prices are year round and many passes have discounts for
groups of two or more, youths and seniors.
Get there faster
Avoid busy airports and clogged motorways and jump on a train.
Travelling at speeds of up to 300km/h, imagine how much extra time
you will have to see the sights.
Travel when you want
There are multiple train services every day between most destinations and
popular routes offer hourly departures. Just choose the time that’s best for you.
Travel overnight
Try a private sleeper or a more affordable couchette on long overnight
journeys. You’ll save time and arrive refreshed and ready for the next day.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Am I eligible to buy a Eurail product?
Where can I view train timetables?
Anyone is eligible to purchase a Eurail product, except residents from
the countries of Europe, the Russian Federation and Turkey.
Current timetables are available on our website. A small timetable is
also provided with your Eurail pass.

XXXXXXXX
I am going to the UK/Europe to work,
can I purchase a rail pass?
Passes must be fully utilised in the first 6 months of your stay. If you have
been residing in Europe or the UK for 6 months or more, you are not
entitled to travel with a BritRail/Eurail ticket or pass.
Before boarding your first train in Europe, you must present
your Eurail Pass and passport at a train station ticket window for
validation. A clerk will enter your passport number, start and end
validity dates. When travelling on a flexible pass you must enter the
travel date in ink yourself in the appropriate calendar box of your
pass each day you travel.
What is a rail travel day?
It is highly recommended to always reserve seats when travelling in
peak seasons. Seat reservations are mandatory on high-speed trains
and should be purchased in advance. Reservations are also required
for overnight services. Reservations are an additional charge. Some
local and regional services do not offer reservations.
No. If you are travelling through a country not covered on your rail
pass you will need to purchase an additional point to point fare.
Always remember to check the routing of the train before you board.
Are meals offered on board?
A rail travel day is from midnight to midnight. This entitles you to
unlimited travel on any number of trains within this period.
Most long distance trains have a buffet car, or you can get a snack
in the bar or from a mobile trolley. Many intercity trains carry a dining
car and sometimes a bar.
What is a rail travel month?
What amenities are available at stations?
It is a calendar month. For example, a pass that begins on 15
September will expire at midnight on 14 October.
Most stations are located conveniently in the heart of the city, offering
easy access to hotels and sightseeing as well as a wide range
of services, including restaurants, gift shops, foreign exchange,
telephones, post offices, book stores, reservations and information.
What is the 7pm rule?
If a direct overnight train starts after 7.00pm on a validated Eurail
Global Flexipass, Eurail Selectpass or selected national or regional
rail pass, the passholder must enter the next day’s date on the pass,
provided it falls within the validity of the pass.
Is help available if I have a problem in Europe?
Yes. The Eurail Traveller’s Guide provided with your pass provides
the addresses and telephone numbers of Eurail aid offices which can
assist you in Europe.
What is the difference between a consecutive
and a flexi pass?
A consecutive pass must be used over a continuous period of
consecutive days from commencement of validity. On the other hand, a
flexi pass can be used on any specified number of days within a longer
validity period.
railplus.com.au/ railplus.co.nz
How much luggage can I take on board?
There are no weight restrictions on luggage on most trains. All trains
have either overhead storage racks, space behind the back of seats or
luggage areas at the end of the car. Most stations provide storage rooms
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
or lockers.
BONUS OFFERS
What happens if I lose or misplace my pass?
Passes cannot be reissued or refunded if lost or stolen. Rail Plus
recommends purchasing rail protection to cover you if your pass is
lost or stolen in Europe or Japan (see page 5). You may also want to
consider adequate travel insurance prior to your departure.

WHAT’S BEST FOR YOU: A RAIL PASS OR TICKET? 5
xxxxxxxxxxxx
WHAT’S BEST FOR YOU:
A RAIL PASS OR TICKET?
With an extensive range of tickets and passes, there is something to suit every itinerary. Not
sure what’s best for you? We’ve put together the following guide to assist you in choosing the
product that is right for you.
XXXXXXXX
PASS OR POINT TO POINT TICKETS?
How long do you plan to travel for?
on the ticket and you can stop off along the way so long as you
continue along the same route. Journeys must be completed by the
end of the day (midnight). Most passes are valid for a maximum
of two months from date of first use. If you are travelling for longer
you could consider more than one pass or combine your pass with
point to point tickets before and after to extend your travel time.
Is your itinerary flexible or structured?
Point to point tickets are open dated however you cannot change
the route or departure/arrival points. If you know where you want
to go then these tickets are the way to go. Passes are the ultimate
in flexibility so you can go anywhere at anytime within the areas
covered by your pass.
How many destinations are you visiting?
Point to point tickets are perfect if you are concentrating on only
a few destinations. There are exceptions and if you have a few
long trips a pass can be better value. You can check out the cost
of point to point tickets on our website and then compare with a
pass. It doesn’t matter if you don’t use all the pass days but it can
be handy to have a couple of days up your sleeve for changes in
plans or to add an extra couple of day trips.
RAIL PROTECTION PLAN
If your pass or ticket is lost or stolen, the railway companies
will not refund you. Rail Plus has introduced the Rail
Protection Plan which covers you in case your rail pass or
ticket is lost or stolen in Europe or Japan. The Rail Protection
Plan must be purchased at the time you buy your pass or
ticket. It’s a small price to pay for peace of mind.
Do you want to make seat reservations?
Seat reservations are not included on a point to point ticket or rail
pass. Reservations are recommended during busy periods and
when you need to ensure you are on a particular service. High
speed trains must be reserved. It is not possible to purchase an
open dated point to point for these trains. Discounts are available
for passholders and are subject to availability. All reservations are
an additional charge and can be made between 60-120 days prior
to departure of the train either before you leave or on arrival in
Europe.

ONBOARD
EXPERIENCES
From Europe’s high speed day trains, the ultimate in rail
travel, to the comfort of overnight hotel trains, rail is the
most relaxing way to travel.
Most trains offer the traveller a choice of 1st or 2nd class seating. First class is more
spacious with larger seats, more leg room and extra space for your luggage. Second
class offers comfortable seats and often a trolley service or bar car to purchase a
snack and chat with fellow travellers.

OVERNIGHT TRAINS
Go to bed in Paris and wake up in Rome! Time is precious when you’re travelling and
an overnight train journey means you will arrive into the heart of your destination with
the whole day ahead of you. A comfortable night’s sleep is assured with a range of
accommodation types.
2nd Class
A journey on a high speed train is a must for any European itinerary. Travelling at up
to 300km per hour, these trains are the fastest way to travel between Europe’s major
cities. Discounts are available for rail pass holders however passholder fares are best
requested when you purchase your rail pass as services are very popular, especially
during summer and holiday periods.
Sleepers
Sleepers offer complete privacy with either single or twin share compartments. All
sleepers contain upper and lower beds with private washstand, fresh linen and towels.
Restrooms are provided at the end of each car.
Perfect when you’re on a budget, couchettes are open bunks in a compartment, each
with a blanket, sheets and pillow. Usually located in 2nd Class, they accommodate

TRAVEL TIMES
& DISTANCES
Travelling by train simply buys you more time!
Many trains travel at 300 km/h allowing you to move between cities quickly and efficiently
avoiding traffic congestion on motor ways. What does this mean? It means more time to
be spent at your end destination. Over a three week holiday this may mean four more
hours at Vatican City, three more hours at the Eiffel Tower or five more hours strolling
through Venice.

Rail is Greener than Flying!
Eurostar emits ten times less CO2 than flying to our core destinations.
A commissioned research report was conducted to find out exactly how much CO2 is
produced on a Eurostar journey. The bottom line was that flying between London, Paris and
Brussels generates ten times more emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2)
than travelling by Eurostar.

Tailor Made Journeys mean that you are not travelling with a tour group. You are
travelling on your own or with your own companions on an itinerary that is customised
for you.
How does it work?
After creating an itinerary, Rail Plus will confirm each of the services requested and
provide you with a detailed day by day itinerary and vouchers for each service you
have booked. Your day by day itinerary includes instructions on how to collect your rail
tickets as well as information about your hotels, train times and contact details for our
local representative in each of the countries you visit. All you need to do is follow your
customised itinerary and enjoy the adventure ahead of you.
How flexible are the itineraries?
The only limitations to creating your own itinerary on our standard routes are the rail
schedules, however, since all trains depart at least once a week and many depart daily,
this opens up a world of possibilities.
