Transfiguration and Communion Sunday
Becoming Aware
“And if these mountains had eyes, they would
wake to find two strangers in their fences,
standing in admiration as a breathing red
pours its tinge upon earth's shore. These
mountains, which have seen untold sunrises,
long to thunder praise but stand reverent,
silent so that man's weak praise should be
given God's attention.”
Donald Miller, Through Painted Deserts: Light, God, and Beauty on the Open Road
Welcome to Binkley!
Binkley Baptist Church is a community of faith on a journey that calls for questioning, humility, and
conviction. As followers of Jesus, we embrace spiritual growth, mutual care, and service, assured that
as we serve our neighbors, we joyfully serve God. Intentionally inclusive, we welcome people of all
races, sexual orientations, and cultures, respecting diverse religious experiences within the church
and beyond. We invite others to join us in our commitment to peace, justice, and care for creation. In
a spirit of Christian love, we welcome you.
GATHERING
RINGING OF THE SANCTUS BELL
Some traditions ring “Sanctus Bells” to call worshippers’ attention to “the holy.”(Sanctus means
“holy” or “sacred.”) Today, the Sanctus Bell rings to signify the holy around, among, and within us.
PRELUDE
Adagio
INTROIT
Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus
César Franck
O soul, are you weary and troubled? No light in the darkness you see? There’s light for a
look at the Savior, and life more abundant and free! Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full
in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His
glory and grace. Come gaze on the Christ and be radiant! Be changed, be transformed, be
made new, from glory to glory transforming. The secret is this: Christ in you!
(Added verse based on Ps. 34:5, 2 Cor. 3:17-18, Col. 1:27 - J. Clark)
* CALL TO WORSHIP
Marcus McFaul
One: Oh how we long to behold the glory of that mountain vista.
Many: To see God’s creation of incarnate love shining brightly.
One: Peter, James and John – what did these beloved students see and hear?
Many: Splendid beauty, faith amplified, and a call to listen well.
All:
Lead us to the mountain Divine One. But keep us ever mindful of the
multitudes longing for justice below.

THE GOSPEL LESSON
Luke 9: 28-36
POEM FOR SILENT PRAYER AND REFLECTION
It is a Beauteous Evening, Calm and Free
by William Wordsworth
It is a beauteous evening, calm and free,
The holy time is quiet as a Nun
Breathless with adoration; the broad sun
Is sinking down in its tranquility;
The gentleness of heaven broods o'er the Sea;
Listen! the mighty Being is awake,
And doth with his eternal motion make
A sound like thunder—everlastingly.
Dale Osborne
Dear child! dear Girl! that walkest with me here,
If thou appear untouched by solemn thought,
Thy nature is not therefore less divine:
Thou liest in Abraham's bosom all the year;
And worshipp'st at the Temple's inner shrine,
God being with thee when we know it not.

Christ Upon the Mountain Peak
THE INVITATION TO CHRIST’S TABLE
Holy Communion is a sacred and central part of Christian worship. It is a holy act, in
which we, individually and corporately, commune with the Loving God. We welcome
all who desire a deepened relationship with Christ to the Communion table.
From time to time, questions arise concerning the participation of young children in this
congregation’s service of Holy Communion. The Diaconate recognizes that two historic
Baptist principles inform this decision. Baptists are set apart from many other Christian
traditions by our practice of Believer’s Baptism, which signifies full membership in the
church. Traditionally, many Baptist churches encourage persons to receive the
Communion bread and cup for the first time after they have been baptized. At the same
time, our historic insistence on Soul Liberty reminds us that Baptists value and respect
each believer’s unique and personal relationship with God. The Diaconate thus
recommends that all members of Binkley continue to deepen their understanding of the
meaning of Holy Communion, and that families enter into a time of discernment
concerning when their children are able to appreciate the sacred nature of Communion.
We affirm the responsibility of all believers to determine whether and when they and
their children will partake of the Communion elements as we all participate in the
service of Communion.
THE DISCRETIONARY FUND
Today you are invited to make a special offering to the Pastor Discretionary Fund. This
fund allows Binkley to support our church and community members who are in
financial crisis. Earmark any checks “Discretionary Fund” in the item section.
Envelopes are available in the chair racks.

begins with two opportunities for worship at Binkley: Noon in the Chapel (service will
last 20 minutes, in time to head over to Primetimers at 12:30 pm) and at 7:00 pm in the
sanctuary. Both services include the imposition of ashes. The later service features choir,
harp, and sermon from Dr. McFaul.

Feb. 16  7:00 pm, Location TBD: Kerygma Bible Study. A long-term Bible study
(32 weeks, Tuesdays 7-8:30 pm) will be offered entitled DISCOVERING THE BIBLE.
This is an introductory exploration of where the people, places, and stories of the Bible
intersect with your story. Through a process of reading, reflection, discussion, and
creative expression, both the first-time learner and the lifelong student are invited to an
engaging, rewarding encounter with Scripture that will greatly deepen your knowledge
and understanding of the Bible. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. Dr. Marcus
McFaul will lead and facilitate the class. Please RSVP directly to Marcus at
[email protected].
Feb. 19-21  Children’s Choir Workshop Weekend The Chapel Hill Children’s Choir
Workshop Weekend returns to Binkley Church! The workshop, which was held for the
first time last February, was a tremendous amount of fun for all the participants, and
marked the resurgence of our Children’s Choir at Binkley. The event is free of charge and
is open to the community. The workshop weekend is intended to provide an opportunity
for children who love to sing to learn more about music and the voice. The weekend will
consist of a Friday evening pizza dinner (from 6-8) for the children and their parents
followed by musical games and crafts. Saturday, from 9:30 until mid-afternoon, the
children will enjoy learning three new pieces of music, more crafts and music related
learning games, a musical instrument petting zoo, and lunch. Sunday morning, the
children will sing the new pieces they learned in the 11:00 service at Binkley. Contact
Daniel at [email protected] for more information.
Feb. 27-28  Christ United Methodist Church: Mental Illness Workshop Mental
illness affects 1 in 5 adults each year, including friends, family members, colleagues and
others in our community, many of whom suffer alone. You could be the help someone
needs. Just as you learn CPR, you can become certified to help someone who may be
experiencing a mental health problem or crisis. Certified Mental Health First Aid
instructors will teach an 8-hour course on Feb 27 (9am-1pm)/Feb 28 (1-5pm) at Christ
United Methodist Church. The training is free of charge, but we will be collecting a
donation for our instructor’s time. As class size is limited, please register by e-mailing
Maggie at [email protected] by Sunday, February 14th.
Feb. 28  Barbee’s at Binkley Our friends from Barbee’s Chapel will share a worship
experience and bountiful lunch with us on Sunday, February 28. Rev. Gene Hatley will
preach. They prepare wonderful food for us when our congregation visits them. Let’s
welcome them for lunch with our favorite dishes to share: meats, vegetables, salads,
desserts, et cetera. It is a great opportunity to get to know our Barbee friends better.
Contact Ann Brock, Charles Carver, Lillian Lee, or Margie Billinger with questions.
SAVE THE DATE . . .
April 1-3: Binkley Women's Retreat. Our theme will explore Celtic Christianity, and
we'll be returning to the lovely beach setting of the Trinity Center, Salter Path, North
Carolina. Registration forms are available in the narthex and by Stephanie Ford’s door.
April 16: An Evening of Cabaret, 7:00 pm, Fellowship Hall. The elegant evening of
music, comedy, sweets and silent auction that was snowed out has been rescheduled! The
event was originally sold out. If you have a ticket, please plan to come. If you have a
conflict on April 16, you may pass your ticket(s) along to a friend, or turn the ticket in to
the office for re-sale (there is a waiting list for this long-anticipated event!) You may ask
for a refund or simply have your ticket price go to the music ministry as a contribution.

WAYS TO GIVE:
SOUPER Bowl of Caring: This morning! The Souper Bowls of Caring have been
taking place in houses of worship across America for over 20 years. Two large soup pots
will be in the narthex; Binkley youth will “soupervise” the pots. Each pot will represent a
participant in the Super Bowl (a football game); this year it’s the Carolina Panthers and
the Denver Broncos. Congregants are encouraged to place any amount of money in the
pot of the football team they hope will win the game. The best news is that the local IFC
Food Pantry will receive all the money we contribute. They will use the money to buy
needed groceries to be distributed to hungry families in our community.
Service and Spiritual Gifts: We are entering a season in which many opportunities for
service at Binkley will become available: new positions on the Church Council, which
begins its new year in March; election of new deacons in April; and election of our
Search and Call Committee to select our new Senior Minister. Please spend some time
thinking prayerfully about YOUR spiritual gifts and how you may serve at Binkley at this
time in a way that “makes your heart sing”! Remember that we are all part of the Body
of Christ here and that YOUR particular gifts are very important to the whole!
Stewardship Update: Keep those cards coming in! We thank the 162 families and
friends of Binkley who have pledged $601,606 towards our 2016 Asking Budget (~91%
of budget goal.) We still need your help; please consider a pledge. Your support makes it
possible for Binkley to minister to our congregation and the greater community.
THANK YOU…
Many thanks to Christine Andersen, Meredith Bratcher, Tonya Hamm, Anne Huffman,
and Wayne Robinson who filled in as deacons to Ann Cockrell’s Deacon Family Group
while Ann had hip surgery and was recovering. We’re glad that Ann is able to resume
her deacon duties again and really appreciate those who “stepped up” to help out during
her absence!
FYI…
Youth Discipleship Adventure Begins. Please be in prayer for our 7th grade and older
youth who will be participating in the 2016 Discipleship Class, beginning February 23.
Led by Dale and Stephanie, the six sessions will begin with a “bring your own” supper at
6:00 pm followed by learning opportunities that run until 7:45 pm. The learning
opportunities center on our relationship to Jesus as followers of his teachings, our
relationships to one another in the class and our relationship to Binkley Baptist Church
and the Church Universal. We will enrich our lives together through prayer, service, and
learning over 6 consecutive Tuesday nights in February and March. Class participants
will also explore their own thoughts about baptism and joining Binkley as followers of
Jesus. If you are youth and are interested in joining the class, please contact Dale.
