Lesson 6 Factoring Complex Trinomials

MATH 10 - UNIT 5 – LESSON 6 – FACTORING COMPLEX TRINOMIALS
POLYNOMIALS UNIT
Name:____________ Block: _____ Date: _______
Warm up! Factor the following trinomials.
1. 2‫ ݔ‬ଷ − 4‫ ݔ‬ଶ + 6‫ݔ‬
2. ܽଶ + 4ܾܽ − 5ܾ ଶ
3. −݃ସ + 4݃ଶ + 12
Complex Trinomial:____________________________________________________________________

Example:
Factoring Complex Trinomials:
Example: Factor 3‫ ݔ‬ଶ + 8‫ ݔ‬+ 4
Step #1: Find two numbers that multiply to
give you the product of the coefficient of the
first term and the coefficient of the third term,
and add to give you the coefficient of the
middle term.
Step #2: Split the middle term
Step #3: Common factor in pairs.
Step #4: Common factor out the binomial.
NOTE: Always common factor first!!
Examples:
1. 10‫ ݔ‬ଶ + 3‫ ݔ‬− 1
2. 10‫ ݔ‬ଶ − 22‫ ݔ‬+ 4
Try it! Factor the following polynomials completely.
1. 10ℎଶ − 3ℎ − 1
2. 15‫ ݐ‬ଶ + ‫ ݐ‬− 2
3. 4‫ ݔ‬ସ − 5‫ ݔ‬ଶ − 6
3. 16‫ ݔ‬ଶ − 44‫ ݕݔ‬+ 10‫ ݕ‬ଶ
