Program Objective:
Phytotherapy is the science of studying medicinal plants and other medicinal plant products in
both the treatment and prevention of diseases.
The program objective is to comprehend medicinal plants products from a scientific point of view.
The attendee will gain two certificates of attending and passing a diploma in “Medicinal Plants:
Biodiversity and Health”.
1. European accredited certificate by The University of Barcelona (UB). and
2. Certificate from University of Sharjah by Center of Continuous Education (CCE).
Participants should register online through University of Sharjah website.
Attendees will develop:
1. an understanding of the basic principles of medicinal plants
2. an evidence-based knowledge of medicinal plants, benefits, limitations, and risks of an
incorrect use
3. tools and skills to judiciously discern between different medicinal plant products
4. an understanding of standards of quality, efficacy and safety in this field
5. an understanding of the rigorous scientific research and the latest trends in herbal medicine

Program Methodology:
The training will be presented through interactive lectures, group discussions and case studies.
Attendees will be asked to share their own experiences and provide advice on to other
participants in the course.
Course contents:
1. Medicinal plants, medicines from plants and Phytotherapy
Content: Definitions medicinal plant, herbal drug, herbal preparation, and herbal medicinal
product, active principle, etc…. Development of medicines from nature. Phytotherapy. Bases of
quality, safety and efficacy. Sources of information.

2. Plant biodiversity and herbal drugs
Content: Introduction to plant morphology and systematics. Plant biodiversity. Macroscopic and
microscopic identification of herbal drugs. Chemical and genetic fingerprinting of herbal drugs.

3. Chemical diversity of herbal drugs
Content: Overview of the main chemical groups found in the herbal drugs, such as
polysaccharides, lipids, polyphenols, terpenes, alkaloids, etc.

4. From plants to herbal medicinal products
Content: Cultivation, harvesting and processing of medicinal plants. Good Agricultural and
Collection Practices (GACP). Herbal preparations: extracts, essential oils, etc. Finished herbal
products: overview of dosage forms used in Phytotherapy.

5. Quality of herbal drugs and herbal preparations
Content: Quality requirements. Identification, purity, strength and stability. Quality control
methods. Pharmacopoeia.

6. Ethnopharmacology and local medicinal plants
Content: Definition of ethnopharmacology. Methods and outcomes of ethnopharmacological
research. Local research on medicinal plants. Main local medicinal plants and their uses.

7. Clinical Phytotherapy
Content: Overview of the use of herbal products for the treatment of central nervous system,
cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, metabolic and genitourinary disorders.
