WHAT TO WEAR WHEN YOU’RE OUTDOORS...
Layering Techniques
The key to staying comfortable outside is to wear layers of
clothing that can be varied according to your activity and the
weather. Typically, there are three basic layers in a climate
control clothing system:
1. The Wicking Layer “Next-to-skin”

The job of the next to skin layer is to wick moisture away
from your body, minimising wet conductive heat loss. An
effective wicking layer should be breathable and
non-absorbent. Synthetic fibres such as polyester and
polypropylene or natural fibres such as merino wool are
good choices; fibres such as cotton are not, since they
actually absorb and retain body moisture. They can
become wet and uncomfortable very quickly and then
stay that way since they dry very slowly. This is both
uncomfortable and unsafe.
2.The Insulating Layer (Mid or warmth layer)

The insulating layer's prime function is to trap air and to
keep your body warm whilst still allowing body moisture
to pass through. Worn over the wicking layer, the
insulating layer is often made up of synthetic fibres since
they retain their insulating abilities even when wet. They
also wick better, are lightweight and dry faster than
natural fibres, such as wool and cotton and tend to be
less bulky, allowing greater freedom of movement.
3. The Weather Protection Layer “Outer layer”
or “shell”
This layer covers and protects all the other layers. It
must be both waterproof and windproof to keep the other
layers dry and aid heat retention. Like all the layers in a
clothing system, outerwear must be breathable, to allow
your body's moisture vapor to pass through to keep you
comfortable.
All three layers are important ingredients in the
climate control formula. However, the outer two
layers are not always worn. Vary them
according to the weather and your level of
activity. These layering principles apply equally
to your choice of footwear and socks.

Wicking Layer (Next-to-Skin)
Snowgum has several choices for the wicking layer. Here we explain three:
Snowgum Thermabods
Thermabods are a lightweight warm thermal layer made of polypropylene.
Polypropylene is a warm and breathable material that is extremely fast
drying and will keep most of its warmth even when wet. Thermabods are
ideal for hiking, water activities and even for sleeping in.Thermabods come
in both mens and womens fit, sizes XS-XXL and 6-18. Kids sizes S (2-4),
M (6-8),L(10-12) are also available.

Snowgum Merino Wool
We use ultrafine 17.5 micron merino in our woollen thermals. This means
that you will not feel that annoying itch often associated with wool. Merino
has many natural properties that make it the best choice for outdoor use:
It helps to regulate body temperature in both cool and warm climates; It
washes and wears superbly; so there’s less washing! It has natural fire
retardant properties. One great advantage of Merino over polypropylene
is that they don’t stink after a few days wear.

Ideal as a next to skin layer in hot weather or as an extra layer
between the wicking layer and the insulating layer in cool weather.
The rip-stop Tactel fabric used in these shirts is rated at UPF 30+,

Outerwear - The Weather Protection Layer
Snowgum Storm Jacket and Overpants
The "Storm" range of jackets and over pants are constructed from
VaporTEC® 3-layer fabric. The fabric is actually made up of three
separate layers laminated together to form one piece of ultralight,
thin and extremely durable fabric. The three layers consist of an
outer nylon shell which is durable and tear resistant, a middle highly
waterproof and breathable membrane and an inner layer made from
a mesh material that protects the membrane and helps the jacket to
breathe. This all sounds technical - and it is. The fabric is engineered
to stop the wind and rain from coming in whilst allowing moisture
vapour from perspiration to escape. This means that the wearer is
able to stay dry and comfortable as body moisture vapour will pass
through the membrane. These garments work best when

Sturdy, supportive boots will be one of your most important outdoor gear investments. Major considerations must be
ankle support, quality of components and construction, comfort and waterproofness.
l
When trying them on, wear the socks you intend wearing with the boots, a light pair of wicking socks next to
your skin and heavy pair of wool blend socks on the outside is recommended.
l
With the boots laced firmly, go through the following procedure and let the answers be your guide:
- Are your big toes 1cm from the end of the boot?
- Can you move your toes freely? Boots that are tight around the toes are cutting off circulation and may cause
cold feet in winter and/or blisters in summer. You may need a wider boot.
- Does the back of the boot hold your heel in place when you walk around? If not, rubbing up and down will
cause blisters. Perhaps try a smaller pair or a different style.
- Firmly kick the toe of the boot into the floor. If your foot slides in the boot, and your toe touches the end, the
boot is either too long or has too much volume.
- Lean forward on to your toes. Is the boot flexible and lightweight enough to allow for comfortable walking?

SOCKS
The best socks for extended outdoor activities are a wool blend. Sound construction and a good snug
fit are important to avoid blisters. Wearing two pairs of socks also helps prevent blisters as the friction
occurs between the two socks and not against your foot. A thin liner sock against the skin and a
thicker sock over it works best. Avoid 100% nylon or cotton socks. Nylon on its own does not wick
moisture and cotton absorbs sweat and stays wet.

SLEEPING BAGS
There are three important factors to consider when choosing your sleeping bag: The shape, the shell (outer material)
and the filling material.
Shape. Snowgum has developed a tapered rectangular shape for outdoor use providing the best balance between
warmth, comfort, weight and bulk. Wider in the hips and shoulders, narrower in the foot (but still with plenty of room to
move) and a double ended full zipper allowing the bag to be opened out flat and used as a quilt or unzipped at the
foot only for added ventilation.
Shell. Snowgum uses only superfine high thread count nylon ripstop outer shells for added durability, water
repellency and breathability. The inner is 100% high wicking superfine polyester which is soft against the skin and
extremely breathable. It is also non absorbent so if you do sweat in the bag it will dry quickly. Cotton or flannelette
lined sleeping bags should be avoided for outdoor use.
For added comfort and to keep your bag clean we recommend the use of an inner sheet at all times.
Filling. There are basically two types of sleeping bag filling: synthetic and down/feather.
Synthetic Filling
Snowgum uses synthetic fillings that have been created to emulate the air trapping characteristics of down. Our
synthetic fillings are made from a hollow fibre about the size of a strand of hair and have either one or many hollow
channels in them. These are too small for the naked eye to see but they are very effective at trapping warm air and
thus keeping your body warm. The fibres loft well (fluff up when removed from the storage sack) and are sewn in
panels that are placed strategically around the bag for best performance (eg, some have more on the top than the
bottom). Synthetic bags are not as warm as down bags for the same weight of filling but they do maintain their
warmth when wet and dry quickly - this is a significant advantage over down.

Down/Feather Filling
Down/feather comes from ducks or geese. Down is the very light natural fibre that lies close to the birds body and
provides insulation. Down sleeping bag filling also contains a small amount of "small feathers" which assist in keeping
the down loose and assists loft (the amount the bag fluffs up when taken out of the stuff sack). The down is
distributed around the bag in a series of channels or baffles that ensure you have the right amount of filling for each
part of your body - eg more on top than the bottom and more around the chest than the legs. Whilst down is
unrivalled for warmth to weight ratio and is resilient to compression it is not very effective when wet and will take
some time to dry. It is also considerably more expensive than most synthetics.

The high tech construction combines air trapping open-cell foam bonded to a waterproof, durable outer shell. The open
cell foam naturally expands when you open the valve, draws in air and “self inflates” the mat. Close the valve when
inflated and the trapped bubbles of air form an exceptional insulating layer to prevent heat loss through the ground.
The bonded construction helps provide maximum comfort preventing the complete displacement of air and foam at
