Chapter 8 Section 1: 1. George Washington was the U.S. first

Chapter 8 Section 1:
1. George Washington was the U.S.
first president.
2. The government’s first course of
action was to provide three
departments for the executive
branch. The treasury, state, and war.
3. Alexander Hamilton was the
secretary of state. His job was to
handle the country’s economic
affairs. Thomas Jefferson was
Secretary of state. His job was to
manage foreign affairs. Last Henry
Knox became secretary of war.
4. The Judiciary act of 1789
established a Supreme Court of 6
justices. Under that were 3 circuit’s
courts and 13 district courts.
5. The Nation’s first problem was the
economic crisis after the war.
6. The U.S. racked up a huge debt
because of its war for independence.
The question was how to pay the
money back.
7. Hamilton Financial Plan. First the
U.S. would take responsibility for its
debts. Second The U.S. would
develop a national bank. And third
the U.S. would impose high taxes on
goods imported into the country.
8. Paying the debt was a great
debate because; many southern
states did not want the country to
pay the debt back. They wanted each
individual state to pay the debts back
on their own. However, the
compromise that was agreed to was
that the country would pay their debt
back together only if the capital of
the U.S. was moved to the south. The
southern states wanted it between
the Virginia and Maryland boarders.
9. The second step setting up a
national bank.
10. The third step high taxes. The
tariff was the only part of Hamilton’s
plan that did not pass. This was
mainly because; the southern states
opposed it stating that the tariff
would only help the north and hurt
the south.
11. The Whiskey rebellion. In 1791
congress imposed a tax on whiskey
made and sold in the U.S... They
hoped it would increase revenue, but
it led to a rebellion.
