Welcome
to the 51st National Youth and
Christian Education Convention
W
elcome you to our National Youth and CE
Convention. I extend special greetings to Dr.
Eric and Revd Millicent Brown, our guest speaker Revd
Doug Williams and all our other special guests.
Our theme this year will take us through the story
of King Josiah and shares with us many important
lessons. Here are four brief points I would like to
highlight:
1. Your family history does not have to
define you
Although Josiah’s family tree consisted of great men
such as Abraham, Jacob, David, and Solomon, those
whom he knew would have been his father, Amon,
and his grandfather, Manasseh, who spent 57 years
corrupting Judah. Manasseh built the high places
that his grandfather, Hezekiah had torn down. He
erected altars for Baal. He worshipped the sun, moon
and stars. He sacrificed his own children, practiced
witchcraft, divination and dealt with mediums and
spirits (2 Kings 21:1-6). His son, Amon followed
in Manasseh’s footsteps. One could easily assume
that Josiah, Amon’s son, would continue in these
abominations. After all, he was 8 years old when he
was made king.
But Josiah rose above that of his predecessors. In fact,
one could argue he was one of the greatest kings that
Judah had for “before him there was no king like him,
who turned to the Lord with all his heart, with all his
soul, and with all his might, according to all the Law
of Moses; nor after him did any arise like him (2 Kings
23:25).”
It is possible to break the wrong patterns that our
parents, and/or our grandparents may have taught us.
Eight year old Josiah did it and proved it is possible.
2. We must be more than just God
fearing
The first eight years of Josiah’s reign mentions none
of his works. Exactly what prompts him to begin his
reformation is unknown. But, in the eighth year of his
2
NTCG England & Wales 51st National Youth and Christian Education Convention
reign, at the age of 16, he began
to seek the Lord. Four years later
the reformation process began
and he began to purge Judah
and Jerusalem from all the
unauthorised altars and places of
worship (2 Chronicles 34:3-4). Yet,
it was in the 18th year of his reign that
he realised his sin. When Josiah began to repair the
damages done to the temple, the book of the Law,
that is the Pentateuch, was discovered. Up to this
point in Josiah’s life one could easily describe him as a
God fearing man and one who sought after God with
all his heart. However, when Josiah heard the words
of the Law, he understood that he, and the rest of
Judah had sinned (2 Kings 22:13). Josiah at that point
humbled his heart and began to seek the Lord with
the Law as his guide.
We must be willing to do the same. Merely being
God fearing is not enough. It is a starting point! Our
reverence for the Lord should motivate us to keep His
commandments.
3. We must work the fruits of repentance
Although Josiah had already been reforming Israel
for a period of ten years, his reformation reached a
new level when the Law was read to him. He then
removed all the vessels of Baal from the temple. He
did away with the idolatrous priests, he defiled the
altars to the false gods, he even broke down the altars
that Jeroboam had built nearly 300 years earlier (2
Kings 23:15). Furthermore, he not only purged Judah
of the false forms of worship, but he led them to
worship God, the way God had intended. Josiah did
not just offer lip service to God. He did not just say I
am sorry. He did not merely rent his cloak. He worked
the fruits of repentance.
If we desire to set our lives right with God we must be
willing to do in a like fashion. We must be willing to
tear down what is evil in our own lives and then begin
pursuing after righteousness.
4. our reform must be complete
This has been alluded to already. Josiah completed
the work. As the account of his life comes to a close
it says, “Now before him there was no king like him,
who turned to the Lord with all his heart, with all his
soul, and with all his might, according to all the Law
of Moses; nor after him did any arise like him (2 Kings
23:25).” Josiah was one of a kind, not just because of
where he came from, but also because of where he
led Judah. He was unlike most of the kings before
him who had left some form of idolatry up; whether
it was high places, idols, unauthorised altars, the two
golden calves, etc.
If we desire to please God we must give ourselves
completely to the Lord. God does not want a half
hearted approach in our worship. He does not want
someone who keeps one foot in sin and the other
in righteousness. God wants us to be completely
devoted to Him.
May we all experience the fresh touch from God over
this weekend that we all need. Let our prayer and
song be as was penned by James E. Orr, “O Holy Ghost,
revival comes from Thee; Send a revival, start the work
in me.”

Greeting
from the National
Youth & CE Board
o
n behalf of the Board, I would like to welcome
you all to the 51st National Youth Convention.
Last year we celebrated our 50th Convention, a
year of Jubilee, a year of freedom. This year we are
looking at restarting our relationship with God,
staying refreshed in His Word and being so effective
that our lives stir up a desire in others to connect
with God, bringing revival to our families, schools,
colleges, universities, cities and work places. Josiah
was so moved by hearing the Word of God, he had
to respond. I encourage you to spend time in God’s
Word, hear what He has to say to you and respond
accordingly. Have a great weekend! Enjoy
Greeting
from the

T
he East-end of London has always
been seen as the home of some
pretty ‘dodgy geezers’, thankfully,
Doug Williams is not one of them!
As the Senior Pastor of Emmanuel
Christian Centre, a large and thriving
inner-city church, Doug has to have a
clear head and a heart for challenge.
“All the diversity that our church deals
with is a constant source of… creative
challenge,” Doug quips, “but I love
every minute!” Training at Spurgeon’s
College was a major part of his
academic preparation for the task, but
learning is a lifelong pursuit for this
minister.
Local church work is part of the big
picture of Christian leadership for
Doug as previously he served his
denomination, the AOG (Assemblies
of God), as part of their overall
National Leadership Team. He is also
former Superintendent for Greater
London region as part of the same
denomination.
“I love the opportunity to serve in a
wider context than our local church

a
wonderful
opportunity for me, but my heart is
never far from home. The local church
really is the hope of the world. Our
Church seeks to be a safe place for
kids, a supportive place for parents,
a welcoming place for visitors,
an exciting place for teenagers, a
friendly place for Senior Citizens and
a home for the Community. We
believe that, real life is worth
celebrating, so we do! With
excellent music, passionate

kinds of activity, church has

all that gets expressed in worship is an

If you think back to when you were 8 years
old, what memories would come flooding
back to you? For some of us the memories
of the past are painful and we would rather
forget them. For some the memories are happy
and we smile as they linger in our thoughts. I
imagine for Josiah there were many memories
of the past, but I am more certain the bad far
outweighed the good. Josiah was 8 years old
when his father King Amon was murdered.
What did the future now hold for young Josiah
- he could not change the past, but was faced
with decisions that would shape the future. I
invite you now over the next 15 days to journey
through the life of Josiah and find out how this
young king and his story can help change and
impact your future.

The
Characters
in the Story
king josiah
• Josiah means “the Lord supports.”
• Became king at the age of 8.
• Reigned in Jerusalem 31 years.
• At the age of 16 he began to seek the
Lord wholeheartedly to gain a meaningful
relationship with Him.
• At 20 began to purge the kingdom of idolatry.
• At 26 began the restoration of the temple
in Jerusalem and the same year was able to
celebrate the Passover to the Lord in Jerusalem.
• At 39 shot in battle by an archer and was fatally
wounded. All Jerusalem mourned him.
Day 1
2 Kings 22:1
king amon
(Josiah’s father)
• Became king at the age of 22.
• Reigned in Jerusalem 2 years.
• Followed in the evil ways of his father
Manasseh.
• Was murdered in his own palace by his own
officials who had conspired against him.
jedidah
(Josiah’s mother)
• Jedidah means, “Darling of God.”
king manasseh
(Josiah’s grandfather)
• Became king at the age of 12.
• Reigned in Jerusalem 55 years.
• Did much evil in the sight of the Lord arousing
His anger.
Hilkiah
• A Hebrew priest at the time of King Josiah.
• Found a lost copy of the book of the
law at the temple in Jerusalem during
refurbishment.
Shaphan
• Scribe or court secretary.
• When the chief priest Hilkiah discovered the
lost book of the law he gave it to Shaphan
who in turn gave it to King Josiah.
Huldah
Josiah was 8 years old when he became king.
His father King Amon had been murdered by
his own officials who had conspired against
him. For Josiah, his childhood had swiftly
been taken away from him and he had to
grow up fast. Josiah’s grandfather King
Manasseh held the title of being one of the
wickedest kings ever. His son King Amon had
followed in his father’s ways. What now did
life have in store for the young Josiah? Josiah
would have to make a choice about what the
future would hold for him. Would he follow
in the evil ways of his wicked father and
grandfather or would he follow in the ways
of his forefather King David?
Selah*: What kind of environment do you
find yourself in today and how might it affect
you?
Day 2
2 Kings 22:1
After the death of his father Josiah was raised
by his mother Jedidah.
Jedidah means “God’s darling or beloved of
Jehovah.” We do not know much about this
woman, but I would think that she played a
major role in the upbringing of the young
king. Other good role models in Josiah’s
life would have been his teachers, possibly
Shaphan the court secretary and other
spiritual advisors who would have taught
him a variety of subjects that included
languages, mathematics and governance. I
believe Josiah was a good student.
Prayer Focus: Ask God to send some good
role models into your life today.
• A prophetess wife of Shallum, the keeper of
the royal wardrobe.
• Huldah prophesied national ruin because
of the people’s disobedience to God’s
commands.

Day 3
Day 5
2 Kings 22:2
2 Chronicles 34:3-7
“And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord
and walked in all the ways of his father David and
did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.”
In the twelfth year of his reign when he was 20
Josiah began to purge the land. This would be
an immense task, but Josiah was determined to
rid Judah and Jerusalem of all pagan worship,
destroying all the high places.
When I was a child I was the only person of a
household of 8 to go to Sunday school. I had a
good teacher who showed me the love of Jesus
and taught me how to walk in God’s ways. My
family and friends would mock me and laugh at
me, but as young as I was I would not be moved
as I was determined to follow Jesus regardless of
the pressure I was facing. Many young people
today who have made Jesus Christ their Saviour
may find themselves under pressure especially
from the world. The world will try to dictate to you
how to live, how to dress, what music to listen to,
who to hang out with, what career to choose and
the list goes on. The bible says Josiah did not turn
aside to the right or the left. Here was a young
man who knew exactly what he wanted from life
regardless of his situation. I thank God for Josiah.
Selah: How will you choose to walk today?
Day 4
The wooden images: These were poles dedicated
to Ashera the Canaanite fertility goddess.
The carved images and moulded images: These
were made from moulded metal.
The altars and idols that had been built by his
father and grandfather were broken into pieces
and he made dust of them, as did Moses when he
destroyed the golden calf in Exodus 32:20.
He burned the bones of the priests, thus fulfilling
the prophecy mentioned in 1 Kings 13:1-2 during
the days of Jeroboam 300 years earlier.
Josiah’s quest was not limited to Judah and
Jerusalem but he also went through all Manasseh,
Ephraim and Simeon, as far as Naphtali and all
around.
2 Chronicles 34:3
“For in the eighth year of his reign while he was
still young he began to seek the God of his father
David.”
This scripture shows Josiah at the age of 16.
The bible says he began to “seek the God of his
father David.” The scripture is showing that Josiah
is now in quest of a more intimate relationship
with God. Josiah would spend the next four
years building this personal relationship. Josiah
would have known about the evil ways of his
father and grandfather, how they built altars to
Baal and Ashera, how they delved into witchcraft
and sorcery, and how they sacrificed children on
altars of fire. However, Josiah was determined to
break the mould and as he drew closer to God he
became stronger and even more determined to
place his life in God’s hands.
Josiah would also have had great pleasure in
destroying Topheth or “the fireplace.” This was a
place where his grandfather had sacrificed his
own sons to the god Molech in the fire. It is said
drums would beat very loudly to drown out the
screams of the children.
As Josiah went around purging the land he also
collected money to help repair and restore the
temple in Jerusalem. To purge the land took 6
long years, but Josiah was determined to succeed
whatever the cost.
Selah: Can you identify any idols in your life
today? What steps can you take to eliminate
them from your life?
Day 6
2 Kings 22:8
Selah: Have I got a relationship with God and do
I take it seriously?
12
The Life & Times of King Josiah - A 15 Day Devotional
In the eighteenth year of Josiah’s reign as the
refurbishment of the temple had begun, Hilkiah
the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe I have
found the book of the law. In Deuteronomy 31:26
this book had been placed by the side of the Ark
of the Covenant. Possibly it could have been lost
or hidden; nevertheless during the renovation of
the temple it was found. This was truly a treasure
worth finding.
Selah: What does God’s word mean to you?
Day 7
2 Kings 22:8 - 11
Then Shaphan the scribe showed the king the
book saying “Hilkiah the priest has given me a
book” and Shaphan read it before the king.
The reading of this book would shape Josiah’s
reign. Imagine the look on the young king’s
face at hearing the Word for the first time. The
bible says Josiah tore his clothes. Josiah at this
point felt genuine remorse as Shaphan read the
laws for living and worship. He would have also
read the punishments for disobedience and the
blessings for obedience. Grief overwhelmed the
young king. The sin in the land was great and
Josiah knew he needed to take action.
Selah: Is there any sin in your life? Now would be
a good time to confess that sin and ask God for
forgiveness.
Day 8
2 Kings 22:12 -13
After listening to the words written in the book
of the law Josiah decides to inquire of the Lord.
He realised he did not want to carry out his own
agenda without clear confirmation from the
Lord. He feared that the Lord’s anger would be
poured out because the nation had not lived in
accordance with all the laws written in the book.
He desperately needed to hear from God.
Prayer for today: Lord help me to hear from you
and in all my ways acknowledge you.
Day 9
himself, the people, and all Judah. The men set
out to the house of a prophetess called Huldah.
Huldah was the wife of Shallum the keeper of
the king’s wardrobe and she dwelt in Jerusalem
in the second quarter. Huldah was well known
for speaking the word of the Lord. Huldah
unfortunately delivers them some devastating
news - God was going to bring calamity on
Jerusalem and its inhabitants; the words
associated with the disobedient in the book of
Deuteronomy 26:15-68 would come true, but
worst of all God’s anger would not be quenched.
Selah: Thank God today for his amazing grace
and unmerited favour towards you.
Day 10
2 Kings 22:18 -20
This was bad news for the wicked who had
forsaken God. Hearts must have been melting
with fear as news spread of God’s impending
judgment. However, Huldah gave them some
good news. She told them that God had seen
Josiah’s piety and his weeping over the sin of his
people and because Josiah’s heart was tender
and his sorrow genuine, he would go to his
grave in peace and his eyes would not see all the
calamity the Lord would bring on Judah.
Selah: Is your heart right with God? Ask Jesus to
come into your heart today.
Day 11
2 Kings 23:1 -3
When the words of Huldah were reported back
to Josiah he called all the elders of Jerusalem and
Judah, all the priests and all the people. Josiah
then went up to the temple opened the book of
the law and read it aloud. This may be referred to
today as public reading. When he had finished
reading, Josiah made a covenant with the Lord
to “follow the Lord and keep His commandments,
His testimonies, and His statutes with all his heart
and all his soul, to perform the words of the
covenant written in the book.”
2 Kings 22:14 -17
Josiah commanded Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam
son of Shaphan, Achbor the son of Michaiah,
Shaphan the scribe and Asaiah a servant of the
king to go and inquire of the Lord concerning
Selah: How will you begin to apply God’s word to
your life today?
The Life & Times of King Josiah - A 15 Day Devotional
13
Day 12
2 Kings 23:3
The words of the book had an impact on all
who were present when it was read. The people
joined King Josiah in pledging to follow God and
obey the words of the book. Imagine the scene,
people cheering, clapping and praising God
as they pledged to follow in His ways and live
accordingly to the law. This was the beginning of
a great revival and all present would be a part of it.
Pray: Lord whatever you are doing in this season,
please don’t do it without me!
Day 13
2 Kings 23:3-20
As revival began the bible lists many reforms that
took place under the supervision of Josiah.
Articles of pagan worship were destroyed;
Wooden images were destroyed;
The articles made for Baal and Ashera and all the
hosts of heaven were destroyed;
The idolatrous priests were removed;
The horses that the kings of Judah dedicated to
the sun were destroyed - they had used these in
solar worship;
Ritual booths were torn down - these booths
were used by prostitutes and often located in the
temple precincts;
He repaired and purged the temple grounds;
He went beyond the borders of the Israelites and
did everything he could to bring reform;
As he went around he also did not fail to
encourage everyone to serve God.
Pray: Lord help me to be an encouragement to
those I meet, so they too can experience revival
and serve the Lord Jesus.
Day 14
2 Kings 23:21-24
When Josiah returned to Jerusalem he
commanded the people to keep the Passover
(Exodus12) to the Lord as it was written in the
Book of the Covenant. The Bible says it was the
greatest such observance since the days of the
Judges. The scripture makes mention of only 3
Passover’s during the Kingdom years. Solomon’s
in 2 Chronicles 8, Hezekiah’s in 2 Chronicles 3 and
Josiah’s. This Passover was a part of the revival of
14
The Life & Times of King Josiah - A 15 Day Devotional
spiritual worship. As long as Josiah reigned the
people did not turn from following the Lord.
Pray: Dear Lord, help me to worship You in spirit
and in truth.
Day 15
Josiah had a very scary background due to the
worthless reigns of his father and grandfather,
but he was determined to break the mould.
Josiah allowed the Word of God to impact his life
and recognised the great value of God’s Word.
Josiah did not only read the Word but he applied
it to his life. He sought the Lord with all his heart
and because of this the Lord through Huldah gave
Josiah a personal word. Josiah decided to make a
public declaration to wholeheartedly serve the
Lord. He was so elated that he did not keep the
word to himself; he shared it with others so they
too would benefit, realise their fallen condition
and return to God. Josiah was able to put his
house in order, encourage others to do the same
and put away all the evil practices of the past that
haunted him. Through Josiah’s godly leadership
and influence he was able to transform the lives of
thousands of people. If we today follow the godly
examples of Josiah and reject the things in our
lives that keep us from having a relationship with
Jesus Christ, humble ourselves, ask forgiveness,
do what is right and be willing to live as God’s
Word instructs us, then God will bring to us, our
families, our neighbourhoods, our cities and our
world revival as we have never seen before. Are
you ready to RESTART, REFRESH AND REVIVE?
Pray:
Dear Lord, I thank you for your Word. I am sorry
for the times I have put your Word aside and have
forgotten about it. Lord, as I begin a new chapter
please help me to understand that your Word
is important and was written for my benefit.
Help me Lord to recognise any hindrances that
stop me from following your Word and having
a relationship with you. Lord, let your Word
empower me so that the fruit I bear will be to see
others come to know Jesus as their personal Lord
and Saviour. Amen.
