biosecurityguidelines.Itisintendedforuseasaguidelineonly.Atnotimeshouldthisdocumentreplace
existingdocumentsestablishedbythefacilityunlesswrittenpermissionhasbeenobtainedfromthe
responsiblefacilitymanager.
PREFACE
Fungiisthenamegiventoastrangegroupoflivingthingsincludingmushrooms,toadstools,moldsand
thousandsofotherweirdandwonderfulthings.Fungiareneitherplantnoranimal,buthavesome
characteristicsofeach.Theycannotmoveaboutlikeananimal,doconsumeorganicmatter,haveno
chlorophyllasdoplants,andcannotmanufacturetheirownenergy.Theyhaveatruenucleusintheir
cellsandareabletosexuallyreproducebycombininglikestrainsofnucleus.Theycanalsoreproduceby
sporessimilartosomeofthemoreprimitiveplants.Generally,themajorityofcommonfungi,yeasts
andmoldsarenotaconcerntosomeonewhoishealthy.However,therearesomeindividuals,
especiallythosewhohaveexistinghealthconcerns,whomaybesensitivetoexposureofthese
organisms.

Transmissionoffungi,yeastandmoldsisgenerallyacquiredfromsporesfoundinsoilorvegetationand
eitheringestedorinhaled.Animal-to-Animaltransmissionisnotofgeneralconcernwithfungiwiththe
exceptionoforganismsthatcauseringwormwherethefungiarefoundontheskinandcanbe
transmittedviadirectcontact.Appropriatepersonalprotectionshouldbetakenforthoseresponsible
forthedecontaminationofanimalpremises.Appropriatebiosecuritypracticesshouldbeapplied,
includinglimitingtheamountofaerosolsgeneratedanddisturbancetodust/soilintheareatobe
cleanedanddisinfected.
PROTECTIVEBARRIERS
Appropriatepersonalprotectionshouldbetakenforthoseresponsibleforthedecontaminationofthe
areaandmayincludethefollowing:
1. Disposablegloves.Glovesshouldbechangedasrequired(whentorn,whenhandsbecomewet
insidethegloveorwhenmovingbetweenanimalhousingareas)
2. Householdglovescanbeworn,buttheymustbediscardedwhenthecleaningiscomplete.
3. ProtectiveEyewear(goggles,faceshieldormaskwitheyeprotection)asappropriatebasedon
tasktobecompleted
4. Masks(surgicalorproceduralmaskssufficient)asneeded
5. Gownsasneeded
PRODUCTS
AllAcceleratedHydrogenPeroxide®(AHP®)disinfectant-cleanerproductshavebeenapprovedforsale
asadisinfectantbyeitherHealthCanadaortheUSEnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA)andcarry
eitheraDINorEPAregistrationnumberindicatingtheirapprovalforsaleasadisinfectant.
AHP®disinfectantsareregisteredasaHospitalGradeDisinfectantwhichdenotesthattheproductshave
beenprovenefficaciousagainstthethreemainsurrogatebacteriadesignatedbothHealthCanadaand
theEPAforBactericidalactivity;Staphylococcusaureus,PseudomonasaeruginosaandSalmonella
enterica(formerlyknownasSalmonellacholeraesuis).AHP®disinfectantshavealsobeentestedagainst
awiderangeofpathogenicfungi,yeastsandmoldsincludingMicrosporum,Trichophyton,Candidaand
Aspergilluswithcontactstimesof30secondsto10minutesdependingontheformulationand/or
dilutionused.

CAREEQUIPMENT
Contaminatedanimalcareequipmentshouldbeclearlyidentifiedandkeptseparatefromclean
equipment.Animalcareequipmentinclude:bloodpressurecuffs,stethoscopes,thermometers,
handlingorrestrainingequipment,feedingandwateringappliances,etc.
1. UsetheAHP®solutiontoremovesoilandbodymaterials(e.g.blood,organicsoils)fromheavily
soileditems
2. ApplyAHP®solutionevenlyoversurfaceensuringthatallsurfacesarethoroughlywet.Items
thatcanbeimmersedmaybeplacedintoacontainerofAHP®solution.
3. AllowtheitemstoremainincontactwiththeAHP®solutionfortheappropriatecontacttime
(refertothelabeloftheAHPsolutionbeingused).
4. Afterthecontacttimehasbeenachievedremoveanyexcesssolutionwithacleancloth,sponge
orpapertowel.
5. Itemsthathavebeenimmersedshouldberemovedfromthesolutionaftertheappropriate
contacttime,rinsedwithpotablewaterandallowedtoairdry.

ANDCAGES:
