Meet Our 2014–2015 Scholarship Recipients $6,600,000 Awarded H 2,200 Scholarships 16900 Science Drive, Ste. 210 | Bowie, MD 20715 | phone 301.858.1500 | fax 301.858.0107 Letter from the President Margaret B. Davis O ur 2014–2015 class of scholarship recipients represents some of America’s best and brightest. Raised by Marine Corps families that instilled in them the values of honor, courage, and commitment, the 2,200 to whom we have awarded scholarships this year are the next generation of America’s leaders. Nowhere was this more evident than at our Scholarship Announcement Ceremonies held in July in Washington, D.C., Camp Lejeune, and Camp Pendleton. We were privileged to have been joined by so many students, their families, Marine Corps leaders, investors, and volunteers at these special celebrations. I hope you will read more about our 2014 ceremonies on page 4. This summer we are not only celebrating our scholars, but our supporters and their overwhelming generosity. On June 26, Toyota announced an additional $1.35 million contribution to the Scholarship Foundation that will create as many as 300 new scholarships for children of Marines and Navy Corpsmen over the next five years. Toyota has supported the Scholarship Foundation since 2004, and this gift brings their total investment in the Foundation to more than $3 million. Toyota’s expanded commitment will help ensure that the Scholarship Foundation can continue to award a scholarship to every eligible child who applies. We deeply appreciate Toyota’s generosity and its long-standing commitment to our military and education. The investment that Toyota — and YOU — make in our students is an investment in our next generation of leaders. It’s your continued support that makes their dreams a reality and for that we say a most heartfelt Thank You. In the spirit of Semper Fidelis, Margaret B. Student Profile Emily Truman Ever since I was a little girl I have dreamed of attending college and pursuing opportunities in a wider world of career, family, and community. This dream has motivated me to persevere through struggles in school and to overcome trials which might have limited my potential. My family has heavily influenced my decision to pursue a college degree and the limitless horizon which accompanies it. Even though my father has not yet earned a college degree, he has always encouraged my pursuit of one. When he married my mother, he set his college education on hold and joined the military to support his family. As the family continued growing and the years passed, he continued to honorably serve so that he could responsibly provide for his family of ten. Emily Truman is a rising freshman at has Brigham Young University. Her father and s year 19 for s Corp ine Mar served in the i Iraq n ratio Ope of ort supp in e twic deployed ip larsh Scho the Freedom. It’s a family affair; , Foundation also supports Emily’s older sister Jessica Truman. Through experience, my father and mother both know that greater success in life can be accredited to a college degree. They encourage me to pursue a degree because they desire my future to be filled with limitless horizons. They have influenced me, and I have decided to earn a degree at Brigham Young University ... It has always been understood that ... I would be responsible to fund it on my own. I have been employed part time as the desk receptionist at a local hotel for the past year. This income, along with other earnings, has all been deposited into a college savings fund. However, these savings in themselves cannot fund a college education. Consequently, in aspiring to earn a university degree without becoming seriously entrenched in debt, I am excited to receive a scholarship from the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. I am hopeful that, with the support of this scholarship, I can earn a bachelor’s degree in History from Brigham Young University — a degree that will enhance my success in life by providing a limitless horizon. News and Programs Donor Spotlight: In Memoriam edia industry leader, veteran Marine, and long-time Scholarship Foundation supporter James C. “Jim” Dowdle passed away in February due to congestive heart failure. Described by colleagues as a visionary in the industry, Jim led the Tribune Company — from which he retired as Executive Vice President in 1999 — through a period of tremendous challenge — and opportunity. In addition to an indelible impact in the corporate arena, Jim was a stalwart community leader who invested his time and talent in organizations ranging from the Loyola University Medical Center and Junior Achievement of Chicago to the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, of which the Scholarship Foundation is proud to be a beneficiary. Jim is survived by his wife, Sally; four children; and 18 grandchildren. Sean, a financial advisor and portfolio manager, enjoys spending the day with his clients and having them learn more about the Marine Corps and the students who benefit from the Scholarship Foundation’s investments in their education. In that way, he and Elizabeth hope to add to those who might consider the Scholarship Foundation for their own charitable giving. THE ROCKMORE SOCIETY Sean and Elizabeth recently joined The Rockmore Society, thereby creating a personal legacy that will extend beyond their lifetimes and help future generations of Marine Corps sons and daughters pursue higher education. With their commitment to The Rockmore Society, Sean and Elizabeth honor Elizabeth’s father, a Marine officer who passed away at a very young age, shortly after Sean had the privilege of meeting him. Day of Honor With Medal of Honor Recipient Sergeant Dakota Meyer T welve students who receive Sergeant Dakota Meyer Initiative Scholarships — created by Sgt. Meyer to honor the Marines he has served with and those who died during the action for which he received the nation’s highest award for valor — met in Lexington, Kentucky, for a day with the Medal of Honor recipient. Students enjoyed the opportunity to meet personally with Sgt. Meyer and get to know him. During the day, one student asked Sgt. Meyer why he chose to partner with the Scholarship Foundation and he replied, “Education — that’s why. I believe we are fighting this war, and other battles around the world, because of under-educated people. If people would realize the importance of an education, the world would be a smarter, better place with less conflict.” Special thanks to Bob’s Gun Warehouse, which provided firearms training for the students and the chance to receive personal shooting lessons from Sgt. Meyer, an avid sportsman. Also, thank you to horseracing landmark Keeneland Racecourse, where students and Sgt. Meyer enjoyed a tour. 7 CORPS CHAMPIONS MARINE CORPS SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION NATIONAL OFFICE 909 North Washington Street, Suite 400, Alexandria, VA 22314 Phone: (703) 549-0060 Web: www.mcsf.org UPCOMING EVENTS Indianapolis Golf Tournament September 11, 2014 – Noblesville, IN Dalai Lama Golf Invitational October 3, 2014 – Dedham, MA Dallas/Ft.
