Onomatopoeia: Sound Imitation

Onomatopoeia is a poetic device that uses words to imitate the natural sounds that things
make. Buzz, ring, and splash are examples of sound imitations or onomatopoeia.

Personification: Giving Human Qualities
Personification is a figure of speech that gives a human trait to something as if it were a person.

Free Verse: Unrhymed Poetry
Free verse is a poem without a set pattern. The lines are divided according to the natural
patterns of speech instead of following a specific pattern.
As a class, write a free verse about what you like to do on Saturday mornings.

Clerihew:
A clerihew is a humourous poem about a specific person. It is a four line rhyming poem, in the
pattern aa, bb. The first line is the person’s name.
Example:

Cento: A Patchwork of Lines
A cento is a “patchwork” poem, where each line is taken from another poem. The theme or subject of
the poem needs to be easily identified. This is a 5-7 line poem
