SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
‘You say tomato, I say tomahto’
The Year 9 science class
investigated Inheritance and
Selection concepts by
collecting, organising and
using large sets of data relating to
variation. They identified some
inherited characteristics and
described how some characteristics
are influenced by environmental
conditions; identify characteristics in
a plant or animal which are
desirable in particular
circumstances; outlined how these
characteristics might be passed on.
With all that being said: They
decided to investigate tomatoes.
Raphael Voyiatsis 9 years old
V – very sweet person
A – stands for awesome personality
L – stands for Love
E – stands for to be together
forever
N – stands for never go away
T – stands for the V.I.P
I – stands for will never forget
N – never stop being sweet
E – stands for exquisite day!

Vidhur Simay (Year 9) pictured above
shares his investigation with you.
What do we want to find out?
We want to find out if
characteristics of specimens differ
or change within certain varieties of
tomatoes.
Then the pH of the different
tomatoes.
FUTURE DATES TO DIARISE:
What could we change?
We could change: the types of
tomato.
Forms of results e.g. Mass,
diameter, circumference.
What would we keep the same?
The amount of Universal Indicator
in each beaker.
The amount of tomato juice.
The same methods of measuring.
Is this a fair test? Explain why
This is a fair test, even though our
method is not entirely fair, it still
proves that variation occurs in a
variety, because each tomato has
different stats.
What is my prediction?
Each tomato should be similar and
have common characteristics, but
there would be differences because
of the rules of inheritance and
selection.
My conclusion
Variation occurs in a variety. It does
this because of the rules of
inheritance and selection of the
different combinations of DNA
strands binding. Characteristics
differ within a variety, yet there are
similarities. This happens because
of pollination, (in plants) the plant
could receive pollen from any other
plants. In animals it happens
because of inheritance. We don’t
receive genes just from our parents,
but from all our blood relations,
resulting in variation within a
variety. Chromosomes control our
features, eye colour, hair colour and
the shape of our noses. This proves
that characteristics can differ.

vocabulary of the body while Year 7
is learning to write some proper
German letters.
Year 6 and 8s are swiftly obtaining
knowledge regarding stationery and
school matters.
And finally, the Year 9s have
mastered some pretty tough
grammar!
I am really proud of the great start
and I am positively ecstatic of what
this year may bring. We might just
have some little Benjamin
Blümchens running around at the
end of the year.
