Name: ______________________________ Date: ____________________________
Key Concept 1: We can identify and compare the physical characteristics
of the Sun, Earth, and Moon, such as surface, temperature, geological
features, composition, and size.
Passage
The Sun, Earth, and Moon share certain characteristics, but are also very
different. The____________ is extremely large and hot, compared to the
______________ and _____________ . It does not have a specific shape.
Earth and the Moon are smaller, shaped like _______________________
and have some of the same landforms on their ____________________.

Key Concept 2: The Sun is made of gases, while the Earth and the Moon
are made largely from rock.
Passage
Although the Sun is made of ________________________, it actually has
a far greater mass than our planet, ________________________, which is
made of rock. The more mass an object has, the greater the force of
________________________. That’s why the _______________ orbits
the ________________________ instead of the other way around.

Key Concept 3: The Sun and Earth have very different
atmospheres, while the moon does not have an atmosphere,
and only Earth has readily available liquid water.
Passage
We are pretty comfortable here on planet Earth, but imagine what it
would be like to live on the Moon, or even the Sun! People would have a
hard time living on the Moon because there is no ___________________
or ________________. Nor would they be able to live on the Sun
because there is no ____________, ____________, or ____________, and
also because it is far too ____________!

Answer Key
The Sun, Earth, and Moon share certain characteristics, but are also very different.
The Sun is extremely large and hot, compared to Earth and the Moon. It does not
have a specific shape. Earth and the Moon are smaller, shaped like spheres and
have some of the same landforms on their surfaces.
Although the Sun is made of gases, it actually has a far greater mass than our
planet, Earth, which is made of rock. The more mass an object has, the greater
the force of gravity. That’s why the Earth orbits the Sun instead of the other
way around.
We are pretty comfortable here on planet Earth, but imagine what it would be like
to live on the Moon, or even the Sun! People would have a hard time living on the
Moon because there is no atmosphere/air or water. Nor would they be able to live
on the Sun because there is no water, air, or land, and also because it is far too hot!
