Full programme details can be found on the Guernsey Music Eisteddfod website www.guernseyeisteddfod.com Series 25 GUERNSEY SYMPHONY 19 GUERNSEY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Saturday Saturday 8.00pm 8.00pm THE GUERNSEY OXFORD LECTURE Mindfulness: Ancient Wisdom meets Modern Science with Professor Mark Williams, Emeritus Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Oxford and recently retired Director of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre. The benefits of mindfulness in preventing serious depression and emotional distress have been proven by clinical trials. Cultivated by simple forms of meditation, mindfulness also works for people struggling to keep up with the constant demands of the modern world. In his lecture, Professor Williams considers what is “mindfulness”, why is it important and how does one practice it? He discusses the latest discoveries that can help us understand how the mind responds to such mental training. With colleagues, Professor Williams developed Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy for prevention of relapse and recurrence in depression. Research has now found that MBCT markedly reduces the rate of future depression for those who have suffered the most serious and persistent forms of major depression and is as effective as antidepressants.
