Ho Chunk Gold
Medal
By Shelby
On Wednesday, November 20, 2013,
Congress presented 33 Native American
Nations gold medals in Washington DC for
their great influence on helping the United
States win World War II. These Indian Nations
helped by using the Navajo language to radio
codes to the US military. The language could
not be broken. They were called the Navajo
Code Talkers. Not only did each nation
receive a medal, but each Code Talker was
also given the Congressional Medal of Honor.
If you’re wondering why this is so
important, it is because the HoChuck Nation
helped. The HoChunk had 7 Code Talkers. Of
the 7 Code Talkers, Mrs. Cleveland’s
grandfather, Jesse Mike, was one of them.
Mrs. Clevland’s brother, Levi Blackdeer, a
Navy veteran who served in the Vietnam War,
accepted the Congressional Medal of Honor
for their family.
These medals are a great and huge
honor for both the Nations and Code Talkers.
It is great for these heroes to get recognized
for their huge help on the war efforts in
World War II.

Middle School
Musical
By Chadd
This year the middle school put on the
musical “Fame, Jr”. Fame Jr. is about a
performing arts high school in New York City,
New York. The students are very talented. The
musical follows the life, love, drama, and
academic arguments of multiple characters.
The main characters were Carmen Diaz (played
by Faith), Nick Piazza (played by Alan),
Goodman King (played by Chadd), Tyrone
Jackson (played by Jaden), Schlomo (played by
Caleb), and Mrs. Sherman (played by Azalea).
The musical was performed Friday, November
22 and Saturday, November 23 at 7:00. It was a
great show.
I interviewed Azalea, 7th Grade musical
performer. She liked being in the musical. She
said that her favorite thing was to be able to
perform for others with her friends.
I was also in the musical and reflected
on how I felt. I enjoyed being in the musical
because they are fun and when you perform,
you get a rush of excitement. I think that my
favorite thing about musicals would be that we
can be a totally different person when we act.
Also, when you’re on the stage, it’s like leaving
reality and entering a new world all your own. I
think that is the beauty of musicals.

Holiday
Assembly
By Zera
We had our holiday assembly on
Friday, December 20th. Students were able
to participate if their names were drawn.
To get their names in the drawing, they
needed to donate money for “Pennies for
Patients”.
Everyone seemed to have a good
time. The band played, the dance team
performed, teachers got taped to the wall,
other teachers got wrapped like presents,
and each team got to pick a present.
