Firstly, I would like to welcome Mrs Lock who will be working across the Federation as
our IT technician, she will be based at St George’s on Thursdays and Fridays. I’m sure
your child will talk about her as we start to enhance IT provision and clubs in the
coming weeks.
On Monday we supported World Mental Health Day in school, discussing ‘Good Mental
Health’ and how we can support ourselves and others.
Children across school from Little Dragons to Year 6 have been embedding their
knowledge of British Values – Little Dragons even have their understanding of the ‘Rule
of Law’.
Reception have been using their creative skills to produce tone and line drawings from
a still life ‘autumn display’ and collecting fallen leaves.
Year 1/2 have been undertaking some fantastic challenges in their maths using division
both indoors and outdoors.
Year 3/4 have been so excited this week as they’ve received an email from the Queen
answering questions about the BFG, Sophie & the other giants, they’ve produced some
excellent writing about this.
Year 5/6 have been expanding on their visit from a real-life Viking sharing their Viking
diary writing in class – they really have enjoyed this topic.
Thank you so much to all the parents, carers & grandparents who came to support Mrs
Evans’ class assembly this afternoon.
In today’s celebration assemblies we have recognised all the hard work Rev. Jonathan
Moores does as it is ‘Thank Your Vicar Week’ We treated him with cards and an
extravagant cake made by children in our Nurture room.
We hope to see all our Reception Children at St George’s Church this Sunday as we
welcome them into the Parish at 11am.
Have a lovely weekend,

Weekly Newsletter
Friday 14th October 2016
Dear Parents/Guardian,
Another lovely week in Little Dragons started with our Parents Evening. It was lovely to
meet the new parents properly, and to catch up with those that have been with us for
a while. If you didn't make it, please speak to a member of staff so we can arrange to
see you at a more convenient time.
Upper Pre-School's Active Living sessions are in full swing, and this week the children
talked about healthy eating habits, and got to make and enjoy some delicious healthy
wraps.
Those new to Upper-if
you haven't already
completed your ASQ
questionnaires please
get them back this week.
Now the weather is
getting colder please
ensure your child has
warm outdoor clothes even if it looks sunny
in the morning!
All 2, 3 and 4 year olds
are entitled to a flu
vaccine
(Via a nasal spray) at
their local GP surgery.
After a short break we welcomed Reverend Jonathon back for Pre-School Praise. He is
teaching the children the Lord’s Prayer, as well as the lovely hymns that are sang in
school worship.
Upper and Lower Pre-Schoolers have working on prepositional language - in, on,
under, next to, and so on. It’s a tricky concept but one that will come in very
useful! They have also been talking about what they like about Pre-School.
The 2 year olds have been using their fine motor skills and learning about cause and
effect by baking bread, which we hope was delicious!
Atherton Start Well centre is now fully up and running. This replaces the old Sure
Start Centre, but still offers many services for under 5's and their families. They are
also looking for parent volunteers to support the services. This is a great way to get
experience and training before looking for work. Call them on 486366 for more
information.
Many Thanks
The Little Dragons team.
Mrs Tanner, Mrs Brown, Mrs Powell, Miss Carey, Miss Barnes, Miss Williams, Mrs
Taylor and Miss Silvester.
Try out this phonics game with your child…
Find some noisy household objects (e.g. keys, pennies, a crisp packed, and a zipper).
Show them to your child and talk about the sounds they make. Hide the items and one
at a time, make the noise. Then get your child to guess which item it is.

Dear Parents/Guardian
This week Reception have been sharing the story 'Room on the Broom' by Julia
Donaldson. We have been using our phonic knowledge to segment and blend
the CVC words throughout the story, we have also been looking for rhyming
words and identifying initial sounds.

for all our hard work.
As part of Expressive Arts & Design and Understanding the World we have
been learning about the seasons of the year and discussing why the trees have
no leaves in autumn. We have collected autumn leaves on the playground and
discussed all the different types we could find. On Thursday we used our
colour mixing skills to create our very own Autumnal pictures.
Thank you,

We have been working on extending sentences using 'and' and 'but' this
week. The children have come up with some fantastic ideas. The children will
be using their new learning to help them write a book review on the Twits
next week.
In Literacy we have been using continuing our work on adjectives and 2A
sentences. The children have produced some wonderful pieces of writing.
The children have worked on improving their writing with our Purple
Perfecting Pen.
In Maths, Year 1 have been looking at solving number stories. They have even
had a go at writing their own word stories. Year 2 have been looking at
multiplication and division.
In CFL the children have designed and created their own pulleys, just like
those that would have been used in the coal mines. The children then worked
hard to evaluate their work and write it up in their writing books.

Dear Parents/Guardian,
We can't believe how quickly this half term is flying by - only one more week to go!
Firstly, many thanks to you all for attending parent's evening on Monday night. It
was lovely to get to know you all a bit better and celebrate how wonderful your

Year 3/4 received a much unexpected email this week, from none other than Her
Majesty, The Queen. We had previously sent her a list of questions regarding The
BFG and the other giants and she answered all of them. We will use this information
to support our letter writing next week.
Some children will be writing biographies about Roald Dahl and Charles Dickens maybe they could research this over the weekend?
In Maths, we have moved on to multiplication and we have been working really hard
to learn our times tables. We have done this in a variety of ways from skip counting,
singing songs and making and playing our own games. We are all aiming to achieve
our gold times tables band by the end of Year 4 as per the national expectation.
In CfL we are trying to answer the question 'How did the Ancient Egyptians light the
pyramids?' So far, we have learnt about natural and manmade light sources, that
light only travels in straight lines and that we need light to see.
Mrs Mawson's class celebrated filling their class treat chart with a pyjama party,
complete with tasty treats and the Minions movie.
Mrs Quinn and Miss Whitehead's classes aren't far behind - they're hoping to fill
them before the end of half term.
Many thanks for your continued support,
The Year 3/4 Team.

In our English lessons we have worked really hard on finding out about the
Norse Gods. The children have put their findings together to produce some
excellent reports. Some of the children had a visit from 'Stoick the Vast' and
got to interview him for their newspaper reports. (Miss Pollard has an amazing
Scottish accent)!!
The children have also written some brilliant leaflets using different layout
devices.
In Maths the Year 5 children have worked hard to understand mixed numbers
and fractions and Year 6 have been working hard also to find the ‘mean’.

In our CFL lessons we have been using ipads and computers to research the
