2016 Greek Week Preview

Greek Week 2016 Preview
April 14 – 23, 2016
This year the Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL) Community renewed its commitment to inclusivity by revamping the
Greek Week Structure. A Greek Week Planning Committee now plans and implements all events after the approval
of the Greek Week Steering Committee, comprised of representatives from all chapters. The structure of the
competition was also changed to better emphasize the community aspect of Fraternity & Sorority Life and
encourage building relationships among chapters and councils. By removing sporting events, more members of the
campus and FSL community can engage in the activities to learn more about each other and what Fraternity &
Sorority Life has to offer.
Highlights
Brotherhood & Sisterhood
All Greek Week events are a mixture of competition among chapters and councils to encourage building
relationships outside of current circles and comfort zones. Several events are open sign up and teams are mixed up
with members from all chapters.
This year Kick-Off will take place at the MSC and will consist of a barbeque, all-Fraternity & Sorority Life
photo, and the traditional Zeus and Athena Competition along with a shopping cart chariot procession to
present the contestants.
A new addition to Greek Week, Hungry Hungry Hippos is anticipated to be a hit in the new Recreation
and Wellness Center. The competition puts a new spin on team work – click here to see what we mean.
GreekSync is also a new event for Greek Week and will surely include stepping, strolling, and the dab.
This competition gives members a chance to demonstrate pride in their individual chapters.
Philanthropy & Awareness
Three days during Greek Week will be dedicated to the Panty and Sports Bra Drive on the MSC Bridge.
Chapters will compete against each other to have the most points at the end of the three days. New
panties are 1-point each and new sports bras are 5-points each. All items collected will be donated to the
YWCA for sexual assault survivors.
UMSL Voices is a collaborative effort among UMSL Counseling Services, Fraternity & Sorority Life, the
Office of Student Life, and Solid Lines Productions to tell stories from UMSL community members about
their encounters with the intersection of sex, culture, and violence. Fraternity and sorority members will
receive points for attending the performance on Thursday, April 21 in JC Penney Auditorium.
Community Service
Fraternities and sororities contribute many service hours throughout the year to local and national
communities. This year we will be partnering with UMSL Students of Service on a Service Saturday and
going out to the local community for the service event. We anticipate over half of fraternity and sorority
members will participate in the service projects.
