The 2017 theme provides the opportunity to explore the many ways that the Fourteenth
Amendment has reshaped American law and society. Through its Citizenship, Due
Process and Equal Protection clauses, this transformative amendment advanced the
rights of all Americans. It also played a pivotal role in extending the reach of the Bill of
Rights to the states. Ratified during Reconstruction a century and a half ago, the
Fourteenth Amendment serves as the cornerstone of landmark civil rights legislation, the
foundation for numerous federal court decisions protecting fundamental rights, and a
source of inspiration for all those who advocate for equal justice under law. This year’s
theme is The 14TH Amendment: Transforming America.
law day high school
moot court competition
The Law Day High School Moot Court Competition brings together high school students from
across the State to showcase their oral advocacy skills. Students compete in moot appellate
arguments to test their understanding of cutting-edge legal questions. By focusing on the
applicability of current legal issues to the high school setting, this competition provides students
with a unique opportunity to strengthen their reasoning skills and increase their understanding of
the Constitution and the judicial system. Hosted annually by the North Carolina Bar Association’s
Young Lawyers Division, this competition introduces competitors to 14th Amendment issues and
other contemporary legal topics. All high school students are welcome to register and compete.
We encourage first time students and coaches to attend. No prior experience with moot court, mock
trial, debate, or any public speaking is necessary in order to successfully participate in the
competition. A primer on the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause is included in the
competition materials.
Homeschooled students are welcome and encouraged to attend as well.
