SUPPLEMENT TO THE “ VALLEY BREEZE ” NOV. 30,1894.
Patient Questioning.
There is-of necessity more or less
difficulty in obtaining accurate
information tli rough an interpretei>
G-reat patience and circuralociition
are often required on the part of
the seeker after knowledge. James
Baker relates a bit of his experience
in this line in European Turkey.
We were passing a field in which
a man was at work, and I espied a
j3i*op which I had never seen before.
I called my interpreter.
‘‘Pano, what is that growing
there?^^
.
don’t know sir.’’
^^Ask that nian, and find ;ont all
about it.”
- ^
fHe talked with the mair about ten
minutes.
^‘Well, what.does he say?” I in
quired, breaking into the conver
sation
^
'
' “ He says, sir, that^Ke plants little
seeds; and it grows like that.” '
“ Does lie give to his horsesor
cattle?”^
Another long talk how took place,
and the answercam^ at last:
he does not give it to his cattle?”
“ What does he do with it, th en f”
More talk. “ He says it is a little
white .seed.”
• ’ ‘
“ Well, what does he do with' it?”
A very long conversation was now
carried on in crescendo tones, each
man becoming^ninch excited. Paiio
at length turned to me. “He says,
sir, that there is a little oil in that
seed.”
“ Well, what does he do with the
oil?” I cried, impatiently.
A long-talk, and then—“ He sells
the oil.
“ Do people burn the oil.”
After another dialouge—“ Ho, he
says people do not burn the oil.” .
“ What do they do with it?”
Talk. “ He says they eat the oil.
“ What is the name of it ?”
Talk. “ He says it is called differ
ent names.”
“ Well, what is it commonly
called ?” I shouted, my forbearance
well-nigh exhausted at such stu- pidity.
Talk. “ He- says it is some times
calledsesdme.”
The two men then plunged into
I violent conversation until thelookei*-\on would have supposed: tfiat a quar
rel was brewing. At l^st Pane said:
“ This man says that cattle are
very fond of that.”
This leads to a new line^of inquiry
and at last, lout of all the answers, I
gather th at _the;. plant is called
sesame; that it is grown'for its seed,
which is made into oil; that the oil
is eaten \vith various kinds of food;
and that the refuse is given to cat
tle; that it is a. sunmier crop and
profitable.
