meet your child’s teachers and hear
some practical ways to support your

Senior School (Year 10-12)
We welcomed our VCE students backed on Tuesday, while
our VCAL and Year 10 students returned on Wednesday,
to our refurbished Senior School Study Centre. Hopefully
all students enjoyed this upgraded space. Students have
access to this area from 8:00am to 5:30pm on most
weeknights. The Senior School Team will provide
afternoon tea and refreshments on Monday and
Thursday, at this time a number of teachers will also make
themselves available.
Recently all of our VCE students in Year 11 and 12
students have been assisted in designing a study
timetable, hopefully they are making use of these.
Numerous staff have volunteered to take up a learning
coach role with our students and will be continually
checking in with them during a designated study session.
Term 1 Key Dates
Term 1 is always a busy term. School Assessed
Coursework will begin within the next two
weeks. Students and Parents will have access to these
dates via Compass. There has been a number of changes
to the SAC procedures, these will be outlined at our VCE

Parent-Teacher Interviews will be held on Thursday the
30th of March and Friday the 31st of March.

she is supported by Sue Clancy (Year 10 Coordinator),
Belinda Marshall (VCE Coordinator), Veronica Hudson

designed to provide parents and students with critical
information for the coming year. This evening is
being held on Monday 13th of February at 6:30pm in the
Study Centre – it is also a great opportunity to meet
your child’s teacher. We will also been holding a short
session on Compass – which enables parents and
students to check timetables, attendance, reports, SAC
dates and learning tasks.

Health & PE Co-ordinator
The Swimming program starts for years 7-9 next week on
the 6th of February. All students in Year 7, 8 and 9 will
attend the Maffra Pool for five sessions over the next four
weeks. Can students and parents please ensure that they
are bringing the correct equipment i.e. Bathers, Towels
and sunscreen. Swimming is an essential skill that has the
potential to be life saving. Royal Life Saving Victoria
provides the information shown below about why
swimming is important. We hope you will read it and
recognise how this could be a vitally important set of
fundamental skills for your students and encourage them
to be fully involved in the swimming program. For more
information on our swimming program contact Katie
Hodge, PE and Health domain leader on 51471790 or
hodge.katherine.a@e dumail.vic.gov.au .
Learning to swim is challenging yet very rewarding. It
provides opportunities for recreational activities and a
healthy lifestyle, but also provides skills that may one day
save a life.
Participation in swimming and water safety programs has
many benefits including:




Learning to swim is not just about learning the
competitive strokes but about developing a range of skills
in personal survival, water safety and basic rescue. In fact,
the survival aspect is considered so important that the
Australian Taxation Office has granted GST free status to
aquatic programs that meet the criteria of offering
Personal Aquatic Survival Skills as the main purpose and
content of their program.
Personal aquatic survival skills include:
 Sculling
 Treading water
 Floating
 Safe entry and exit from the water
 Clothed swimming survival techniques
 Use of devices to assist rescue, and
 Basic swimming skills
Swim and Survive

Personal Aquatic Survival Skills
An excellent form of exercise particularly because
of its low impact nature
A wonderful activity for the whole family
Increasing motor development, balance and
coordination skills
Building confidence as competence in skills are
achieved
Improving medical conditions such as asthma and
low muscle tone
These essential skills may prevent a person from drowning
and enable them to make sound decisions when in an
emergency situation. Swimming and water safety
programs that are consistent with the National Swimming
and Water Safety Framework such as Swim and Survive
ensure that the acquisition of all the personal aquatic
survival skills may be completed.
Can parents please make sure that this program has been
paid for at the front office. Those students with season
passes need to contact the office and quote the pass
number so accounts are not charged for pool entry and
also bring the pass to their first session.

Deb Practice
Kerry Liddell
First Aid Officer
Hi and welcome to a new year at MSC. Here at the College
we provide immediate first aid treatment for students in
the case of accident or illness. However, we have limited
resources and as such do not have the facilities to care for
students for extended periods of time. If the ailment
requires medical attention appropriate treatment should
be sought from a health professional.
With this in mind, it is extremely important that we have
current contact details for parents and guardians.
It is also very important that you provide the school with
emergency contacts if you are unavailable or the school
cannot reach you if your child becomes ill or is injured.
Parents and carers who collect their child from school for
any reason (other than an emergency) must sign the child
out of the school in the register located at the Main Office.
Deb training starts next week, Tuesday and Thursday at
3.30pm in the gym. All outstanding fees need to be paid
ASAP.
Thank you
Year 7 vaccinations in 2017
The Secondary School Vaccine Program offers free
vaccines to Year 7 students. These vaccines provide
protection against:
 Diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis
(whooping cough) – one dose
 Human Papillomavirus (HPV) – three
doses
 Varicella (chicken pox) – one dose
Parents/guardians of year 7 students should look out for
the vaccine consent card booklet coming home from
school with your child. You need to read the booklet and
complete and return Part A regardless of whether your
child is being vaccinated at school.
The Wellington Shire Council immunisation service may
contact you about the Secondary School Vaccine
Program. Schools are authorised to provide basic
parent/guardian contact details to local councils for this
purpose. Contact the school by 28 February 2017 if you
do not want your contact details given to the Wellington
Shire Council immunisation service.
To learn more about the Secondary School Vaccine
Program, the vaccines, the diseases they protect against,
or how you can prepare your child for vaccination, go to
betterhealth.vic.gov.au or immunehero.health.vic.gov.au

Student accident insurance, ambulance cover arrangements and
private property brought to school
Parents and Guardians are reminded that the Department does not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover
for students. Parents and guardians of students, who do not have student accident insurance/ambulance cover, are responsible
for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of ambulance attendance or transport as well
as any other transport costs. It is the responsibility of parents or guardians to look into their preferred options in this regard.
The Department cannot provide advice to parents or guardians on the purchase of individual student accident policy or
ambulance cover.
Private property brought to school by students, staff or visitors is not insured and the Department does not accept any
responsibility for any loss or damage.
This can include mobile phones, calculators, toys, sporting equipment and cars parked on school premises. As the Department
does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools and has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such
property, students and staff should be discouraged from bringing any unnecessary or particularly valuable items to school.
