TOWNSHIP OF MORRIS 2017 MUNICIPAL CALENDAR PLEASE SEE SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TO THE 2017 TRASH COLLECTION SERVICES TRASH AND RECYCLING SERVICES 2017 Dear Residents, As the Automated Trash Collection Program is completed, the Department of Public Works is implementing several changes to the Trash and Recycling collection services in 2017. The most significant change is a reduction in number of required trash collection days. The new program affords us the ability to increase trash collection stops each day, resulting in fewer days required to collect trash. Beginning in January, 2017, our DPW will collect trash on a four day per week basis, Monday through Thursday. Some of our residents will continue collection on the same day as in previous years; approximately two-thirds of our residents will be assigned a new day for trash collection. Please refer to the Municipal Calendar or online, www.morristwp.com for your street and trash collection schedule. We will not be collecting trash or recycling on holidays as we did previously. For 2017, trash collection that falls on a holiday will now be collected the following day. Each subsequent collection day will be pushed to the following day for the work week. For example, New Year’s Day is observed on Monday, January 2, 2017. Therefore, Monday’s trash has been rescheduled to Tuesday, and Tuesday’s to Wednesday, and so forth for the remainder of the week. Recycling remains the same as in 2016, except for holidays. The DPW has made the following change: If your recycling collection day falls on a holiday, it will be picked up on your next normally scheduled day for recycling collection. Recycling collection services scheduled for Monday, January 2, 2017 (New Year’s Day observed) are rescheduled to Monday, January 9, 2017. The only exception is Monday, February 13, 2017 which is Lincoln’s Birthday. In this case we will collect both Monday, February 13th recycling and Tuesday, February 14th recycling on Tuesday, February 14th. Refer to your Municipal Calendar or online, www.morristwp.com for information on your specific collection day. The same principle used for a holiday will apply in the event of inclement weather, such as snow and ice storms, and hurricanes. If collection services are suspended due to weather, your recycling is your next normally scheduled day, and your trash collection will be the next day. For instance, if a snow storm forces us to suspend trash collection on a Monday, Monday’s trash will be collected on Tuesday, and Tuesday’s on Wednesday, and so forth for the remainder of the week. Recycling will be picked up the following week. The large item collection of furniture, mattresses, rugs, etc. for calendar year 2017 will be on a once-a-month basis, except for the month of November. In November, our crews will be dedicated to the Leaf Collection Program, and the large item collection service will be suspended. To schedule an appointment, call the Morris County Municipal Utility Authority (MUA) at 973-829-8006. The facility is open on select Tuesdays and Fridays (9 AM to 11 AM) and Saturdays (8:00 AM to 11:00 AM). Drop-off events are held periodically at the Morris County Public Safety Training Academy, 500 West Hanover Ave., Parsippany. Visit the MUA’s website at www.mcmua.com for more information. SYRINGES If you are a diabetic or a person taking medication by injection, DO NOT THROW OUT YOUR USED SYRINGES! They are not accepted at the County Transfer Station and cannot be recycled. To protect the safety of your sanitation and recycling workers, please register for the Safe Syringe Disposal program at Morristown Memorial Hospital. The program is FREE. Call 973-971-4177 for details TIP *Crushing plastic and aluminum containers not only gives you more room in your recycling container but allows us more room in our collection vehicles. So please remember to rinse out all containers thoroughly and crush containers whenever possible before placing them at the curb for collection. This allows for maximum collection for the most space consuming items. GRASS CLIPPINGS/LEAVES/PLANT WASTE/LIGHT BRUSH: (April through September) 1. Curbside pickup of grass clippings, leaves, plant waste, and light brush is picked up the second Saturday for Zone 1 and the third Saturday for Zone 2 each month beginning April 8th and ending September 16th. Please review the calendar for your street listing and scheduled collection day. 2. Place in 32 gallon standard garbage cans with lid and handles. 3. Grass clippings, leaves, plant waste, and light brush can be mixed together during this period. Light brush may also be tied with string in bundles no longer than 4 feet or placed in 32 gallon standard garbage cans cut to the height of the garbage can. 4. NO PLASTIC BAGS. 5. Fifty (50) pound limit per can or bundle. 6. NO DIRT, LOGS, ROOTS, OR STUMPS. 7. Residents (No contractors) may bring grass clippings and light brush to the Department of Public Works site on Jane Way off West Hanover Avenue during business hours. Plastic bags may be used for this method of disposal. Please be prepared to remove all materials from plastic bags for disposal. The Department of Public Works will be available for RESIDENTS ONLY (No Contractors) to bring their grass clippings and light brush on Saturdays from April to October from 6 AM- 2 PM. LEAVES/GRASS CLIPPINGS/PLANT WASTE: (October through December) In order to comply with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Storm Water Regulations, during the period of October 16th thru mid-December, leaves/grass clippings/plant waste are to be placed out for collection in neat piles at the curb but NOT ON THE PAVEMENT NOR WITHIN 10 FEET OF A STORM DRAIN (CATCH BASIN). 1. Here’s an easy way to recycle plastic classes 1-7. You may deposit your qualified recyclable plastic at your curbside or at the recycling depot in the same way and on the same schedule you do currently. Please follow the rules stated below. If you wish to dispose of oversized class 1-7 objects, please transport them to the depot on Jane Way. Before putting any plastic item into your recycling bin, ask yourself: 1) Does it have any of the below listed symbols stamped on it? (Most recycling symbol codes are located on or near the bottom of plastic containers.) If a PLASTIC item has a Recycling Code 1 thru 7 marked on it, please recycle that item. Some examples of acceptable items are those used for soda, water, juice, milk, shampoo, laundry detergent, squeezable bottles (honey, mustard) blister packs, cat litter pails, yogurt, margarine, bottle caps, small toys, compact disk cases, plastic take-out food, medicine, and baby bottles. These items will be collected with your current recycling curbside collection. Due to collection truck characteristics, items larger then a 5 gallon pail will not be picked up from curbside. Wastewater treatment facilities are not designed to remove pharmaceutical compounds, and they may end up in your local waterways, which may eventually be found in drinking water. Properly disposing of unwanted and expired prescriptions and over-the-counter medications in the trash promotes a healthy aquatic environment and prevents accidental poisoning and intentional abuse. 1. Keep medicine in original container. Mark out personal information on prescription bottles. 2. Mix liquid medicine with undesirable substances like coffee grinds, cat litter, or dirt. Dilute pills with water, and then add coffee grinds, cat litter, or dirt. 3. Place bottles in an opaque container, such as a yogurt container, and secure lid, or wrap in a dark-colored plastic bag. 4. Hide the container in the trash. Do not recycle. Do not dispose of medication down the drain or toilet. Do not keep excess or expired medication around the home. Improper disposal in your trash allows others to divert the substance and consume medication that was not prescribed to them. Ready asks individuals to do three key things: get an emergency supply kit, make a family emergency plan, and be informed about the different types of emergencies that could occur and their appropriate responses. All Americans should have some basic supplies on hand in order to survive for at least three days if an emergency occurs. Following is a listing of some basic items that every emergency supply kit should include. However, it is important that individuals review this list and consider where they live and the unique needs of their family in order to create an emergency supply kit that will meet these needs.
