TOWNSHIP OF MORRIS
2017 MUNICIPAL CALENDAR
PLEASE SEE SIGNIFICANT
CHANGES TO THE 2017 TRASH
COLLECTION SERVICES
TRASH AND RECYCLING SERVICES 2017
Dear Residents,
As the Automated Trash Collection Program is completed, the Department of Public Works is implementing several changes to the Trash and
Recycling collection services in 2017. The most significant change is a reduction in number of required trash collection days. The new program
affords us the ability to increase trash collection stops each day, resulting in fewer days required to collect trash. Beginning in January, 2017, our
DPW will collect trash on a four day per week basis, Monday through Thursday. Some of our residents will continue collection on the same day
as in previous years; approximately two-thirds of our residents will be assigned a new day for trash collection. Please refer to the Municipal
Calendar or online, www.morristwp.com for your street and trash collection schedule.
We will not be collecting trash or recycling on holidays as we did previously. For 2017, trash collection that falls on a holiday will now be
collected the following day. Each subsequent collection day will be pushed to the following day for the work week. For example, New Year’s
Day is observed on Monday, January 2, 2017. Therefore, Monday’s trash has been rescheduled to Tuesday, and Tuesday’s to Wednesday, and so
forth for the remainder of the week. Recycling remains the same as in 2016, except for holidays. The DPW has made the following change: If
your recycling collection day falls on a holiday, it will be picked up on your next normally scheduled day for recycling collection. Recycling
collection services scheduled for Monday, January 2, 2017 (New Year’s Day observed) are rescheduled to Monday, January 9, 2017. The only
exception is Monday, February 13, 2017 which is Lincoln’s Birthday. In this case we will collect both Monday, February 13th recycling and
Tuesday, February 14th recycling on Tuesday, February 14th. Refer to your Municipal Calendar or online, www.morristwp.com for information
on your specific collection day.
The same principle used for a holiday will apply in the event of inclement weather, such as snow and ice storms, and hurricanes. If collection
services are suspended due to weather, your recycling is your next normally scheduled day, and your trash collection will be the next day. For
instance, if a snow storm forces us to suspend trash collection on a Monday, Monday’s trash will be collected on Tuesday, and Tuesday’s on
Wednesday, and so forth for the remainder of the week. Recycling will be picked up the following week.
The large item collection of furniture, mattresses, rugs, etc. for calendar year 2017 will be on a once-a-month basis, except for the month of
November. In November, our crews will be dedicated to the Leaf Collection Program, and the large item collection service will be suspended.
Residents will be required to notify Public Works at 973-326-7398 to schedule a large item pick up. Refer to the Municipal Calendar for the
designated collection week for each month.
For all questions and concerns, please call the Department of Public Works at 973-326-7398 or visit www.morristwp.com for announcements
and updates, and sign up for electronic notification at [email protected].
Sincerely yours,
Tom Eschmann, Superintendent.

ABC’S OF PLASTIC RECYCLING
Help keep plastic out of the landfill. Here’s an easy way to recycle plastic classes 1-7.
You may deposit your qualified recyclable plastic at your curbside or at the recycling depot in the same way and on the same schedule you do
currently. Please follow the rules stated below. If you wish to dispose of oversized class 1-7 objects, please transport them to the depot on Jane
Way.
Before putting any plastic item into your recycling bin, ask yourself:
1) Does it have any of the below listed symbols stamped on it?
(Most recycling symbol codes are located on or near the bottom of plastic containers.)
If a PLASTIC item has a Recycling Code 1 thru 7 marked on it, please recycle that item. Some examples of acceptable items are those used for
soda, water, juice, milk, shampoo, laundry detergent, squeezable bottles (honey, mustard) blister packs, cat litter pails, yogurt, margarine, bottle
caps, small toys, compact disk cases, plastic take-out food, medicine, and baby bottles. These items will be collected with your current recycling
curbside collection.
Due to collection truck characteristics, items larger then a 5 gallon pail will not be picked up from curbside. You may bring large qualified class 1-7
objects such as toys and outdoor furniture to the Department of Public Works Recycling Depot located on Jane Way off West Hanover Ave.
Please clean containers before recycling, all containers should be free of any debris or residue.
RECYCLE ONLY plastic items stamped class 1-7
DO NOT RECYCLE containers that had contained hazardous materials, such as motor oil, antifreeze, etc.
Styrofoam, plastic bags, bubble wrap, ceramics, window glass, light bulbs, mirrors, hangers, or foil will not be accepted.
NOTE: Some grocery stores collect plastic bags for recycling. Plastic bags are acceptable at these locations as advertised, but they are not
acceptable as part of your curbside collection program.
BATTERY RECYCLING
Rechargeable type batteries (Ni-Cad, Lithium, and Button Type Batteries) are accepted at the Department of Public Works Recycling Depot located on Jane Way,
Monday-Friday from 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM and Saturday from 6:00 AM- 1:45 PM. The Municipal Building, 50 Woodland Avenue is another drop off location
Monday-Friday from 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM.
TYPE OF BATTERIES RECYCLED
Ni-Cad batteries used in cordless power tools and cordless house phones. Lithium Batteries used in cell phones, digital cameras, and computers. Button type
batteries used in watches and hearing aids.
TYPE OF BATTERIES NOT ACCEPTED FOR RECYCLING
Alkaline type batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9 Volt) made after 1994 are not considered hazardous waste. Please dispose of these type batteries in with your garbage.

GUIDELINES FOR PROPER DISPOSAL OF HOUSEHOLD MEDICATION
Over-the-counter and prescription medications should not be disposed of down the drain. Wastewater treatment facilities are not designed to remove
pharmaceutical compounds, and they may end up in your local waterways, which may eventually be found in drinking water. Properly disposing of unwanted
and expired prescriptions and over-the-counter medications in the trash promotes a healthy aquatic environment and prevents accidental poisoning and
intentional abuse.
1. Keep medicine in original container. Mark out personal information on prescription bottles.
2. Mix liquid medicine with undesirable substances like coffee grinds, cat litter, or dirt. Dilute pills with water, and then add coffee grinds, cat litter, or dirt.
3. Place bottles in an opaque container, such as a yogurt container, and secure lid, or wrap in a dark-colored plastic bag.
4. Hide the container in the trash. Do not recycle.
Do not dispose of medication down the drain or toilet. Do not keep excess or expired medication around the home.
Improper disposal in your trash allows others to divert the substance and consume medication that was not prescribed to them.
Prevent water pollution, promote a healthy environment, and property dispose of your unneeded and expired medication.
Visit www.americanmedicinechest.com for a disposal location near you.

Ask the question – “What would we do if . . .” a
particular set of emergency circumstances was to
arise? Think about the possibilities of different events:
flood, earthquake, winter storm, etc. Develop escape
routes from your home/work with safe places and
gathering points. Make considerations in you plan for
family members with special needs and/or pets. 3 .

Mitigate hazards at home by keeping heavy objects
on lower shelves, securing bookcases and large

Identify an out of state contact. After a disaster it’s
often easier to make a long distance call then a local

this person and relay messages about where they are
and if they are ok. 5 .

Through its Ready Campaign, the Federal Emergency
Management Agency educates and empowers Americans to
take some simple steps to prepare for and respond to potential
emergencies, including natural disasters and terrorist attacks.
Ready asks individuals to do three key things: get an
emergency supply kit, make a family emergency plan, and be
informed about the different types of emergencies that could
occur and their appropriate responses. All Americans should
have some basic supplies on hand in order to survive for at
least three days if an emergency occurs. Following is a listing
of some basic items that every emergency supply kit should
include. However, it is important that individuals review this
list and consider where they live and the unique needs of their
family in order to create an emergency supply kit that will
meet these needs. Individuals should also consider having at
least two emergency supply kits, one full kit at home and
smaller portable kits in their workplace, vehicle or
other places they spend time.

household liquid bleach per gallon of water. Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners.

SPECIAL NEEDS
REGISTRY
NEW JERSEY
If there’s one thing we’ve learned from the past years of hurricanes, snowstorms and
flooding issues, it’s that preparation is the key to successfully weathering an emergency. In
an effort to assist and support the special needs residents of Morris Township, the Morris
Township Committee in conjunction with the Board of Health is encouraging residents who
require special or extra assistance to register on the Special Needs Registry.
To name just a few issues: whether you use oxygen continuously or only once in a while,
require electricity for certain medical equipment, live alone, have limited family support, or
would need assistance if you were required to evacuate your home quickly in an emergency,
please register at
https://www13.state.nj.us/SpecialNeeds/Registration
This registry is confidential and information will not be released to the public. It will
provide us some additional information if and when another emergency arises.
Remember, having your own personal plan in place for emergencies is invaluable. Here is an
example of a personal planning guide available for download:
http://nj.gov/health/er/documents/citizens_guide.pdf
For additional information about the special Needs Registry program,
please contact the Department of Health at 973-326-7390
